Toku ever too depressing/dark for you?

if anything I would like to see even more dark/depressing toku series, as long as they don't go over the top and have this sappy sense of melodrama (which could easily happen). I guess I will just have to wait and see...

I'd like to cite two 'depressed' and sad series: Fuun Lionman and Spectreman, both from P Productions.

When it comes to tokusatsu I've never seen any series as dark or depressive as these two. If you watch Spectreman you will see loads of deaths (including decapitation) and strong themes such as the one with a boy who suffered from intellectual disability. Then the enemy turns him into a super intelligent being, but he also turns into a monster that needs to eat brains to keep living. His only friend is a dog and it also turns into a monster who is killed by the hero. In the end, the boy is also killed by Spectreman.

As for Lionman... there are also strong scenes like entire villages being massacred by the enemies, children dying, some allies are also killed and so on.

I don't really like when the series goes all out dark, by the end you feel sort of numb when the tragedies continue to happen the main character. Look at 555 for example, near the end when Yuka died I shrugged off because a lot of people had already died in that one. Yet, I got bit teary eye during the final episodes of Den-O when they had to leave Kintaros behind.

I forgot, but did the others know Yuka died? It took them forever to know their friends are orphnoch.

I just watched Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue, and that has to be the single most depressing tokusatsu movie I've seen.

Yeah, Shin Kamen Rider was sad and depressing, especially the end, again according to my unreliable source (555 from rangervision) Zo and J movies were supposed to be even DARKER than Shin (Is that possible in this reality?)

That may have been the plan, but due to the negative backlash from fans toward Shin, Toei went back to the traditional KR style on ZO and J. In addition, Bandai's direct involvement in producing the latter two movies made them more viewer-friendly. ZO is still pretty dark and depressing, especially when you play this:

I never said that ZO wasn't dark, i said that according to 555, zO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE 3X DARKER than Shin, and J was supposed to be even darker than that! if that was the case Kamen Rider would be dead and we would have never gotten decade (actually that wouldn't have been so bad)

555 was a pretty dark series. Lots of death all around and such.

Kiva seemed dark to me at the second final episode when Taiga kills Maya........ right till they trolled us and showed us that it was a prank the next episode. :redface2:
