Thundercats Classic Comic Omnibus Campaign Has Launched

The Thundercats were a multimedia experience from the beginning — when the series launched in syndication in 1985, you could watch the show, play with the figures and read the comic book, which was produced by Marvel through their new Star Comics imprint. Published bi-monthly for most of its life, the comic would reach 24 issues over three years, and then never be seen again outside of dusty longboxes in comics shops. That is, until today, when Dynamite Entertainment licensed the property from WB to produce new Thundercats comics….and revive the old ones. We’ve written before about the oncoming Thundercats Classic Years Omnibus books they have in the works, and today was the day the crowdfunding campaign actually launched. (Delayed from its original November launch date, we speculated the actual time would be during Dynamite’s livestream interview with Lion-O voice actor Larry Kenney…and we were right.) So here’s what you can get: the Thundercats omnibus is being offered as one volume in hardcover, or two volumes in paperback. The paperbacks are a $40 pledge each, but the $100 hardcover will be printed at a larger size and use exclusive art (you can choose between the original 1985 art, or a […]

Hell yes! I grew up watching Thundercats and collecting the Star Comics issues, so seeing the series revived like this is a dream come true. Dynamite’s attention to detail, like using exclusive art for the hardcover and involving creators like Brett Breeding and Larry Kenney, shows they care about the legacy of this property. I’ll probably go for the hardcover; it feels like the ultimate collector’s piece. I just hope this campaign brings the same joy to new fans that Thundercats brought to me back in the ‘80s. ThunderCats, ho!

This is interesting, but I’m always cautious with crowdfunding campaigns. Dynamite has a decent track record, but I’ve seen projects like this get delayed or lose steam before. $100 for a hardcover isn’t bad if the quality is top-notch, but the $350 signed edition feels steep, even for hardcore fans. I might wait and see how the campaign develops before committing. It’s a cool project, though, and I’m glad the Thundercats comics are finally getting some recognition.

Crowdfunding campaigns like this are such a great way to bring niche projects to life. I love that there are multiple price points and formats to choose from, making it accessible for more people. Plus, the inclusion of signed editions for collectors is a thoughtful touch. I’ll probably back it at the paperback level since I just want to read the comics again, but I hope the campaign does well so Dynamite can keep reviving classic content like this.

I get the nostalgia appeal, but this feels more like a cash grab than a true celebration of Thundercats. Offering a $350 edition because Larry Kenney signed it? That’s clearly aimed at squeezing diehard fans. I’d rather see these comics available in a more affordable format, like digital reprints or a lower-priced trade paperback. Nostalgia should be about sharing beloved stories, not exploiting fans who want to relive their childhood.

I never got into Thundercats, but I can see why this campaign would excite fans. It’s cool to see older comics being preserved and made available again, especially since not everyone has access to comic shops with back issues. I don’t know if I’d back it myself, but I like the idea of making these stories more accessible for fans new and old.
