The World As We Know It? (RP)

It all started about a month ago.

In this town, several people were found dead in the streets overnight. I know in a lot of places that's not a big deal, but we don't get a lot of crime like that here. It was after that it seemed like strange things started happening. An increase in disappearances, others reporting that they were attacked by what could only be described as monsters. The weirdest thing was that it turned out it wasn't just happening here, but in big cities all over the world. People started getting scared, looking over their shoulders as they went home at night. Videos started popping up on the internet, people were being interviewed on the news, articles on the first page of the paper..the whole nine yards.

As time passed, it became less and less of a deal. Nobody ever saw an actual monster, and the criticism started piling up. The videos were grainy and blurry, and the people that got attacked were mostly homeless, drunk, or both. It stopped becoming news and started becoming a joke, to be laughed at by people around the water cooler at work or at a bar some night. Some people think there's really something out there, but who listens to those conspiracy theorists on the internet?

Another day dawns, but it's overcast and the dull gray sky brings no real light. The police band on the radio reports another drunk claims he was attacked, and a couple of people are missing. It's just business as usual..right?

The World As We Know It?
Episode 1: A Little Trouble in Big Tokyo!

Tokyo, Japan
Slightly before 7 AM

It may be early, but even the light of the sun has trouble breaking through the thick clouds that cover the skies today. The dim gray light brings no warmth, and a wind from the east makes the day seem colder than it already is. Millions of people are waking up and preparing to go about their day, with thousands of others already at work. A few of those are on the outskirts of Tokyo, inside of a cordon of crime scene tape sealing off an alley on what is a normally quiet street. A small crowd stands about twenty feet away, murmuring and talking among themselves.

A figure in a leather coat walks down the street toward the cordon, raising a hand to keep the brown leather hat on his head as the wind picks up briefly. Three police officers stand inside the alley, and one waves as he recognises the figure, who ducks under the tape. An older officer stands talking to another one of his subordinates near a chalk outline on the ground, who quickly goes back to looking for evidence.

"Katayama! I was wondering when you would get here!"

"Detective Nomura! What a surprise!"

The man with the leather coat and hat is Kenta Katayama of the Tokyo Shimbun, at least that's what the press ID hanging around his neck says. Kenta is a man of fairly average height and appearance, but in good shape and inquisitive dark eyes that shift around the crime scene. He shakes hands with the detective, pointing at the outline on the ground.

"That's..unusual. What did you find?"

"15. Female. A runaway. Folded neatly in half..and draped over the top of that light pole."

"Whaaaa..?"

He looks up to the light pole and down toward the chalk outline on the ground, and quirks an eyebrow at Hyoma Nomura.

"If she was up there, then why is this.."

"There was an accident, and..damnit, Kenta, you don't want to know."

Kenta pulls out his PDA and types a few notes as they talk, A slight grin crosses his face, and he has to keep from laughing.

"Let me guess, another 'monster' case?"

Nomura snickers, waving toward the other two officers with him.

"Katayama, you're like we are..getting the shittiest assignments they can give you. This time we actually get a murder case, but look at it! No fingerprints, no visible evidence of any sort, a girl that was literally snapped in two and found up there? They know we're not going to find anything."

Kenta shrugs and smiles sarcastically. "Detective, at least you didn't get punted down from first page stories to doing things like dog shows and spelling bees after that "monster bubble" burst. It's a miracle I'm still with the company after that, and the only way I get to cover things like this is when I get a tip from guys like you."

Nomura signs off on a bit of paper one of his assistants gives him, and slides the pen back in his pocket.

"After this we're off to investigate another couple of hobo disappearances..are you coming?"

"I might as well, there's not much else for me to do today."

Thread, start!

Now, just a bit of things before we start off. No, you don't have to be in Tokyo. If you aren't, it will be worked out during this very episode, as a matter of fact. For your first post, just introduce your character and a bit of their daily routine. After everyone does that, we'll move on.

The key thing to remember is that the world in general does not believe there's anything out there. There was a frenzy for a short while, and as it died down when nothing could be proven, it's become a joke. Actively telling people you believe in monsters will get you strange looks and snickers.

Now for my character's post..

Tokyo, Japan
Just after 10 AM

"As much as I'm here..I really think I should open a branch office."

"Three times so far this year..so, what brings you to Tokyo this time, Mr. Burke?"

"I'm here to see you, Miss Saito. For that, I'll gladly sit on a plane for fourteen hours."

A soft laugh comes from the other end of the phone, and he walks toward the window, glancing out at the expanse below. His room is at an upscale hotel in downtown Tokyo, high enough to have a great view of the city. Below, millions of people bustle about, a sight that makes him smile.

I've been to so many places, but there's nothing like a big city. Tokyo, especially, has it's advantages.

He had slept in a bit later than usual, and had taken a hot shower and dressed after finally getting out of bed. He was dressed primarily in black, which somehow seemed appropriate given the dreary day outside. He'd been just finishing up a late breakfast when she called, and he'd promptly answered.

Nozomi..the younger sister of Eiji Saito, CEO of Saito Technologies, my business partner here in Japan. Let's see if the direct approach works...

"Since I don't have anything pressing until tomorrow..what do you say about a day on the town?"

The hesitation on the other end of the line is only for a moment, and they agree to meet in half an hour. A smile crosses his features as he hangs up the phone and slides it into his pocket, whistling a few bars of a song as he slides a black blazer over his shirt. He leaves and locks the room behind him, and a few seconds later is going down the elevator, tapping his foot to the beat in his head.

Today I'll enjoy myself, and tomorrow I'll find out how the progress on some of these components are going. These plans of mine will work, I know it! Gray skies or not, it's going to be a good day!

Tokyo, Japan
1130 Hours

Jack absently stirred his Soba, blankly staring at the television, It was your typical Tokyo day, smoggy and somewhat noisy, but not nearly enough in the area he was in. Today, just like nearly every other day, he sat, musing upon his life.

It had been over a year since he moved overseas with the intention to start what at one time was to be "a great dojo" only to now not even be able to claim it a mediocre one. In his year over living in Japan, he had barely had twelve students and not even simultaneously. Hell, not even two at one time.

A shout dragged him back to reality. Jack looked up from his soba and saw the withered face of the stand proprietor looking at him. Such a sight and such a sudden one at that surprised him.

"WHOA! WHAT THE...oh...whew, it's you, I thought for a second-"

"None of that! You ruined your soba, it's cold!"

"No I didn't! I like it more like Zaru Soba...besides, if anyone ruined it, it would have been you when you put your hands on it. I don't exactly see a sink attached to this stand you know."

"You always have smart-ass comment...too bad you don't always have money!"

"Oh, now that's a shot below the belt right there."

Jack down his soba in a few gulps and dropped a few coins in the empty bowl.

"I got money today-"

"Yeah and looking at the wet legs of your pants, you probably went digging through a fountain for it."

"How I got it is immaterial, the point is I have some today and maybe when I'm done passing that stuffs you pass off as soba, I'll be back for dinner. Till then, I can only hope something mildly unpleasant happens to you...like an onion falling on your head."

Jack waved and began to walk down the street, ignoring the not-so-kind comments coming from the vendor. He shook his head and could only think to himself:

"Gray skies or not, it's going to be a bad day..."

New York City, New York
5:30 am

Vic, Barely awake, fumbles around for his passport.

"Look Sir, I haven't got all day."

"Sorry, I know I have it here, somewhere." Still fumbling, he checks his back pockets, "Ah ha, I found it. By the way, why do I need to check it here? I haven't left New York Yet?"

"New policy states that it is required to check it before all international flights. Regardless of whether in the home country or not."

Well, Vic thought, at least you are doing your job. Either way, Vic was happy. He was going to Tokyo, Japan. After graduating University, he decided to spend a year there, to hone his Japanese, and to get away from the pressures of America. Living with his Sister and her husband was fun, but he just needed some time to himself.

After going through the checkpoint, he found his gate, waited for a few hours, and boarded his plane.

"Next stop, Los Angeles, then Tokyo."

Tokyo Japan

Akira Hikaru steps into his office, throwing a portfolio onto the table

Damn, another death He thinks sitting on his desk he lights up a ciggerete and lets out a puff of smoke, going over the folder, it was fill of reports and pictures of the murder sites

These murders don't seem connected...to the best of my knowledge there all perfect strangers hmmm.... He thinks.

Rei was in his room on his computer. He saw that another person had been murdered. While the number of murders was worrying him he was happy that something was happening though it was genuinely saddening that someone was taking lives for no good reason. He then realized something. "I LATE FOR SCHOOL!" He yelled while running out the door.
