The Spectacular Spider-Girl Reduced To Mini-Series

Sad news guys, Marvel have elected to no longer publish The Spectacular Spider-Girl as a Marvel Digital title and as a result the next four issues will be the last for the character for the time being.

There's a lot of factors that contributed to the sales decline. Marvel once said it's principle flaw was the "alternate universe" setting (Hate that word, for me, MC2 is the real timeline because it AGED THE CHARACTERS), some pig-ignorant fans blamed it on Tom DeFalco's old-school style (more b.s, as the legendary Roger Stern considers DeFalco the best Spidey writer ever and he's still regarded as a great writer...maybe it had more to do with DeFalco EVOLVING THE CHARACTERS?), and the fans refusing to support any other writer other than Tom on the title Sean McKeever wrote one issue, and they rioted. McKeever went on to show he could write a female-oriented Spidey title with "Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane", it pains me to think he cant' get a crack at Mayday because the fangirls are stubborn about who writes her

The series will conclude with two "two-in-one" issues, with a possible future one-shot being discussed.

Tom DeFalco and artist Ron Frenz are trying to pitch a Ben Reily led title to Marvel currently.

I enjoyed the MC2 and loved DeFalco's style. Spider-Girl is still one of my fave characters from that. I'm hoping they make a Spider-Girl animated series in the future and put Spider-man on the back burner.

I think it's clear that Spider-Girl has a fan following but it's out-dated thinking to conclude that every popular character or character that has fans can and should be able to sustain the monthly grind. Hell I'd even go so far as to say a lot characters who are popular and that we readily associate with the comics being there every single month would be better off without the monthly grind.

I think series of mini-series is a under-rated model. Because honestly I would rather see one or two good stories with excellent art come out a year featuring a favorite character of mine than a boatload of titles every month that range from sub-par to suckage just to feed the Wednesday beast.

This. I think most characters should switch to the mini-series model. Aside from a few, most will be canceled inside a number of years anyway--you're better off going with mini-series with strong stories and great art.
