The fact that "The Scandal" is based on "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" has me buzzing! 🌟 I love when K-dramas adapt classic literature; it adds such a rich layer to the storytelling. The whole theme of dangerous romance and manipulation can lead to some seriously intense scenes! I can totally picture those dramatic confrontations between characters, especially with a historical twist. Plus, if they nail the costumes and set designs, it'll feel like stepping right into the 18th century. I can't wait to see how the characters grapple with love and betrayal!

If I rated the K-drama solely on costumes and set design, The Scandal would get 10 out of 10 stars. Seriously! THEY NAILED IT!

I watched this one purely for the visuals honestly. The hanbok styling and set design carried so much weight that I almost forgot I wasn't fully invested in the leads. Son Ye-Jin is talented but something about her chemistry with Ji Chang-Wook felt a bit flat compared to their individual performances in other projects. I kept waiting for a spark that never really landed for me. Still finished it because I wanted to see how they handled the widow character, and honestly she ended up being the most interesting part of the whole thing.

Not gonna lie I dropped this after episode 3. The pacing killed it for me. I get what they were going for with the whole manipulation game concept but it just felt like watching rich people be miserable for eight episodes straight. No thanks.

This adaptation choice fascinates me more than the actual show does. Moving Dangerous Liaisons into Joseon era Korea is such a bold creative decision and I think it mostly works from a historical context standpoint. The restrictions placed on women during that period actually amplify the original story's themes about power and manipulation in ways the French setting never could. My issue is the execution dragged in places where tension should have built naturally.

Something about morally gray characters justifying awful behavior because they're "in love" rubbed me the wrong way throughout this entire watch. It's giving main character syndrome energy honestly, where the narrative seems to want us sympathizing with people who are fundamentally using others for their own entertainment. I understand the source material has always leaned into this kind of moral ambiguity, but the show never quite convinced me the leads deserved the sympathy it seemed to want me to feel for them. Beautiful production though, no complaints there at all. Just wish the writing matched the visual ambition because there was real potential buried in this concept.
