The job system is one of the most fascinating and distinctive elements in the Final Fantasy franchise, and it's time we really dig into which implementations worked and which ones fell flat. I personally have a soft spot for the job system in Final Fantasy V. The sheer versatility you get from job switching is incredible! Being able to mix and match abilities from different jobs to create your custom character builds was ahead of its time. I remember spending hours grinding to find the perfect combos for my team. Then there's the addition of the Freelancer job, which felt like the ultimate reward for all that hard work.
On the flip side, I think Final Fantasy XIII's Paradigm system tried to innovate but ultimately didn't capture the same strategic depth. Sure, it had its flashy moments, but it often felt like you were more of a spectator than an active participant in battles. I couldn't shake the feeling that it limited my sense of agency as a player. It makes me think about how diverse the approaches to character progression have been across the series, and not always for the better.
What's your take? Which job systems do you think stood out the most, and which ones do you think could use a revival or a complete rework?
