The HJU Japan Thread - The Language/Food/Culture or anything else Nippon!

I torrented Rosetta Stone a while back. I unfortunately haven't had much time to keep up with it. From what I did go though, I did learn some stuff, but I don't feel like I retained much. I think it's something you need to take at a slow pace instead of how I was trying to plow through it all as fast as possible, lol.

Rosetta Stone is pretty much garbage. It's good if you're a business person who needs to learn enough to not look like a fool on your quick business trip, or if you're someone that just uses it for hours on end EVERY DAY.

I highly recommend the phrase books and the entire "Teach Yourself" series. That way you will learn it in the way that YOU learn. I know that doesn't sound like it makes sense, but trust me it will. Everybody learns different and the TY series will allow you to just take it in the way that's best for you and you'll retain the information a LOT easier.

It says by completing the course you would be at a CEFR B2 Level, basically:
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

I found a volume of Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future in a library today. I only borrowed it because it was Doraemon. When I got home and decided to read it, I noticed that there was English and Japanese in it. The Japanese is mainly in hiragana. There are kanjis, but they are not that advanced.

I'd recommend picking this up if you are learning Japanese.
