The evolution Of Sentai Movies

(Or lack there of, depending on your POV)

Looking back, it's intresting to see how Sentai Movies have changed from the first few to those of my recent seasons.

One thing i noticed was that back in the 90's, the movies usually came out around episode 10, fairly early in the season. These day's they seem to come out episode 25, about halfway into the season.

Plus the Vs. movies have made the jump from just being DTV to the big screen, starting with Shinkenger Vs. Go-Onger (I believe).

But that has not changed the formula of said movies, as they still remain golrifed episodes that could have easily been worked into the season proper, so the difference between the movie and just another week in the season is not very much.

Your thoughts on Sentai Movies?

I'd probably enjoy the Sentai movies a lot more if they were either full length or if I could see them in the theater with the Kamen Rider double feature.

Most the movies I've seen have been ok. I'd imagine they would look really awesome on a giant movie screen. I did like the Magiranger movie pretty well, but IIRC that was about 40 minutes long instead of the typical 20-24 minute fare we usually get from Sentai.

Go-onger vs. Gekiranger was the first theatrically released team-up (I know, minus JAKQ vs. Goranger). Close enough though.

The stories in the movies are kind of episode like, from Dynaman to Shinkenger, but that doesn't make them less entertaining. Something I noticed is that the filmmakers are at least making the movies better looking than the show. The older films just took the henshin sequences and mecha start-up footage from the series while the newer ones made new ones. The films also look like they had bigger budgets than a typical episode, which made them look better.

Sure, the movies could've just been TV episodes, but I won't hold that against them if they're good. Good Sentai is good Sentai, no matter how big the screen. I commend Toei for at least going through the effort to make them look better.

Personally, my favorite Sentai film has to be the Magiranger movie.

My only major problem with Sentai movies is that they're often too short, since Toei puts more time and effort into the Rider movies instead. What I'd like would be for Toei to balance the budget for their summer roadshows between the two films more evenly
