I was thinking about how gaming difficulty has changed over the years. Back in the day, we had games like Ninja Gaiden and Contra that were brutally challenging and tested our skills to the max, often making us memorize patterns and learn from our mistakes. Nowadays, many games, especially in the indie scene, include assist modes or easier settings, which is great for accessibility, but does it take away some of the satisfaction from overcoming a tough challenge?
I recently played Elden Ring, and I loved the way it balanced challenge with freedom. Sure, there were frustrating moments, but there was also that incredible feeling when I finally took down a boss after countless attempts. It made the victories feel so much sweeter! But I can't help but wonder if future games will lean even more towards accessibility at the expense of challenge.
What do you all think? Are we losing something valuable in the name of player comfort? Should harder games be a staple of certain genres, or is this evolution for the better? Let's hear your thoughts!
