The DCAU Lives!

Paul Levitz stood to make an announcement, and spoke about a new strategy for DC to move into direct-to-video animation.
Working with Warner Bros. Home Video and WB Animation, the company will launch a new line of direct-to-video DC animated movies that are being designed with DC Comics fans in mind, Levitz said.

He continued, saying that DC is looking to do a series of titles that will tell the character bits and stories that were important to fans, and will be working with the comic book creators on them. The first title will be the previously-leaked animated film version of Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier. Cooke will work with Stan (JLU) Berkowitz on the film, with Cooke providing key art direction.

Another title in the series, Levitz continued, will be Superman/Doomsday, which will take the "essence" of the Superman/Doomsday story - and will be directed by Bruce Timm and written by Duane Capizzi, who's currently working on The Batman animated series.

The third title in the series will be an animated version of the classic story Teen Titans story “The Judas Contractâ€, written by Marv Wolfman. Tom DeStano (X-Men) will join Wolfman as co-writer and producer on the film.

"This is just the beginning," Levitz said. "We're sitting around and thinking of more...so send all your suggestions in."

"We're going to take the marquee-value characters that have love across the generations," Levitz said. "And use the stellar characters so that the parental generation will reach out and share it with their kids. We're looking at all the great stories, and cases where we can find the best stories of a long run."

Levitz also added that George Perez will be working on the animated Judas Contract as well, and that Bruce Timm will be overseeing all the animated films.

Clarifying the direct-to-video animated movies, DiDio said that the animation will be similar to the art in the comics, rather than working existing stories into currently existing animated styles for the DC animated properties.

So...new Titans movie set IN the actual DCAU this time, Superman/Doomsday picking up the best parts of the Jurgens storyline, and New Frontier gets an adaptation...nice to see that with the childish commercial **** dominating Kids WB/The CW/Cartoon Network, Bruce and co are going into darker territory

I would love to see them do a mini series out of The Long Halloween.
I would also love to see Jim Lee's artwork in animated form. How kickass would that be?

Interesting. :jam:

**** "interesting". An animated version of The New Frontier? Hellz yeah! That's not interesting. That's mind-numbingly awesome! (Only no story altering. I don't want John Stewart in place of Hal Jordan or any **** like that.)

Beyond that...I've never read The Judas Contract, but I've heard its good. Superman/Doomsday lost its meaning to the animated universe since the Justice Lords Supes owned his ass and then fucking lobotomized him, but oh well.

Ideas for more?

The Long Halloween
Dark Victory

The thing about them being set in the DCAU is that you can't do a lot of stories because things have happened differently. Now, if these things were *all* standalone? Well then we could do stories like Zero Hour/Final Night. And you know what might be impossible to do, but crazy fun to watch? The one 90's DC crossover I liked: DC One Million. That would be EXCELLENT. And, that one would even fit into continuity, since characters like Hal and Kyle and others don't play the biggest roles.

And, since I know you've all been thinking it: Kingdom Come. :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

glad to hear that the DCAU survived yet another "crisis" I was hopin they'd stick with airing it on TV but this is good, still hopin for a Green Lantern Corps tv show.

read that even though Timm gonna behind it, I gotta wonder how in tune these projects are goin to be with the DCAU. all of these might be stand alone that have nothing to do with the DCAU. Not to say they won't rock, Timm is in charge according to what was posted

Just as long as we don't anything else along the lines of Brainiac Attacks...:shakefist

Still, it's good news. Adaptations of War of the Gods and Our Worlds At War would be interesting to see.

The only thing I'm worried about if there were to be a DCAU version of Kingdom Come, is that It wouldn't be the same feel. The art in the comics were so drastically different from normal comics, that it made it more special, and more realistic. :/

But the other series mentioned look pretty bad ass, and if they said " Classic Teen Titan's Story", I hope that means the Comic Teen Titans. The newer animated versions are a fun spinoff the idea, but its so uncanon.
