The Batman Part II Is Going To Take Even Longer

If all had gone according to plan, we could have been seeing Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman, The Batman Part II, as soon as October of next year. But that’s not our reality: the picture was delayed once already, an entire year (October of 2026) and now as of today it’s been hit with Delay #2, which will add on ANOTHER year (October 2027). Ultimately, it means there will be a distance of over five years between The Batman and its sequel. The holdup is Reeves himself; he is reportedly struggling with crafting the perfect sequel script and won’t let go of it until he considers it perfect. WB has now filled the slot The Batman Part II would have taken with an untitled, unannounced Tom Cruise movie from director Alejandro González Iñárritu. There had been several cinematic takes on the Caped Crusader by the time The Batman came out; some ultra-campy and some ultra-serious. Reeves’ version was more on the serious side, but he brought a fresh new take to the screen by focusing on something the previous versions hadn’t: Bruce Wayne’s detective abilities. Five years between films feels like forever, but if Reeves wants to make The Batman Part II worth it, I’ll wait. We’ve seen what happens when studios rush sequels (cough Justice League), and it’s never pretty. In the meantime, I’d love to see more spin-offs like The Penguin. That show was pure gold!

I’m not surprised but still bummed. Reeves is a brilliant storyteller, but this endless pursuit of the "perfect" script feels excessive. Nothing is ever perfect, and the longer this drags on, the harder it’ll be to live up to the hype. 2027 is a long way off—hopefully, it’s worth it. At least we have Penguin to compensate for all the wait.

I’m really torn about this news. On the one hand, I absolutely loved The Batman. It was refreshing to see a take on Bruce Wayne that leaned heavily into his detective roots. Matt Reeves did a stellar job creating a gritty, grounded Gotham that felt alive and distinct from other iterations. That said, waiting over five years for a sequel feels like a tall order. Fans have already been incredibly patient, and while I respect the pursuit of excellence, at some point, you risk losing your audience. I mean, how many other superhero movies will come and go before this one even arrives? I’ll still show up for The Batman Part II, but the enthusiasm I felt right after the first movie has definitely cooled down.
