If all had gone according to plan, we could have been seeing Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman, The Batman Part II, as soon as October of next year. But that’s not our reality: the picture was delayed once already, an entire year (October of 2026) and now as of today it’s been hit with Delay #2, which will add on ANOTHER year (October 2027). Ultimately, it means there will be a distance of over five years between The Batman and its sequel. The holdup is Reeves himself; he is reportedly struggling with crafting the perfect sequel script and won’t let go of it until he considers it perfect. WB has now filled the slot The Batman Part II would have taken with an untitled, unannounced Tom Cruise movie from director Alejandro González Iñárritu. There had been several cinematic takes on the Caped Crusader by the time The Batman came out; some ultra-campy and some ultra-serious. Reeves’ version was more on the serious side, but he brought a fresh new take to the screen by focusing on something the previous versions hadn’t: Bruce Wayne’s detective abilities.
