If all had gone according to plan, we could have been seeing Matt Reeves’ follow-up to The Batman, The Batman Part II, as soon as October of next year. But that’s not our reality: the picture was delayed once already, an entire year (October of 2026) and now as of today it’s been hit with Delay #2, which will add on ANOTHER year (October 2027). Ultimately, it means there will be a distance of over five years between The Batman and its sequel.
The holdup is Reeves himself; he is reportedly struggling with crafting the perfect sequel script and won’t let go of it until he considers it perfect. WB has now filled the slot The Batman Part II would have taken with an untitled, unannounced Tom Cruise movie from director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
There had been several cinematic takes on the Caped Crusader by the time The Batman came out; some ultra-campy and some ultra-serious. Reeves’ version was more on the serious side, but he brought a fresh new take to the screen by focusing on something the previous versions hadn’t: Bruce Wayne’s detective abilities. If he’s so good at solving mysteries, why not show him solving one for once? Critics and audiences alike loved the movie, and eagerly awaited a follow-up….and awaited, and awaited….
The hole was partially filled with The Penguin, the miniseries that ran on HBO and Max last fall. It took place in the same world and starred the same Penguin (Colin Farrell). Rumors persist of a second season, but it depends on who you ask.
Will The Batman Part II happen in 2027, or will it take even longer? That’s up to Matt Reeves and his word processor.
