Speed Racer [2008]

Seeing as nobody has started a official review thread yet for the movie, I decided to start one and I apologise to the Mods if I've done so without permission but I just wanted to let everybody know how great this movie is [plus get bragging rights due to the time difference between the UK and US!]

To start with, this movie is definitely well worth seeing and the people cast in the various roles definitely make the movie worth watching more than once; Rain in particular being amazingly good as Taejo and Matthew Fox as Racer-X [HIDE][and I won't spoil it for you but the twist and double-twist concerning Rex and his secret identity as Racer-X is definitely something I didn't expect!][/HIDE], also the actress who plays Taejo's sister is pretty hot in her own right and character-wise can take care of herself as proven in one scene during the movie. Also, Peter Fernandez and Corinne Orr who played Speed Racer and Trixie in the classic dub make cameo appearances in the movie version as well.

As for the Racer family, John Goodman and Susan Sarandon are totally amazing as Pops and Mom Racer while I laughed out loud at the antics of Spridle and Chim-Chim; especially in the scenes where they got into trouble [which in their case was practically all of the time!]

The villains are as villainous as you'd expect them to be, especially Royalton and Crusher Block although Royalton at the end of the day definitely stole the show with his maniacal evil villain attitude without being over-the-top camp.

My absolute favorite scene of the movie has to be [HIDE]the one where one of Royalton's ninja's is sent to assassinate Speed and for his pains get his ass handed to him on a plate by Pops, Speed and in one hilarious part, gets kicked in the crotch by Spridle![/HIDE]

The cars themselves are totally mind blowing [HIDE]especially the Mach 6 which we get to see at the end of the movie and makes the Mach 5 look like a antique![/HIDE]

I'll say this, I thank Kami Sama that I have a Cineworld Unlimited card because I definitely need it with all these kickass movies coming out and I get to watch as many movies as I want for a low fee as well.

Overall, this is definitely the best movie by the Wachowski's yet! Yes, even better than the Matrix trilogy and I definitely hope they do more Speed Racer movies, this one is so damn good, especially the ending [the end theme is pretty kickass as well as it incorporates elements of the original Japanese theme as well as lines from the classic English dub]!

BTW, one warning for any epileptics out there, I only found this out at the last minute myself before going to watch the movie and it seems that the cinema themselves only found out at the last minute in that it has lots of flickering and flashing lights so if you suffer from epilepsy, be sure to take your epileptic medication with you just in case as I did.

I was never a fan but this movie looks damn IMPRESSIVE. I definatley need to see it.

Hell, I saw a toy commercial the other day with some killer toys for the show too.

Is that a Ninja?
More like a Nonja. Everyone tries to pose as a ninja these days.
Cool beans!

[hide]I might have quoted that a bit wrong, but the over all idea was the same.[/hide]

it seems the general opinion of the movie when it comes to critics and such is pretty negative.

It's a damn shame, it wasn't the best movie ever, but damn if I didn't love it. Granted the CGing was a LITTLE bit excessive. I didn't care much for the Mach 6 however... it just didn't really feel "right". It's still the best reinterpretation I've seen of Speed Racer though, as opposed to both the US and Japanese attempts at a remake are concerned.

now if only I could get the remade version of the theme song out of my head.

Not sure where I heard this but I generally agree with this statement:

"Hipster will hate this movie, mostly because it's got heart"

After watching the movie I totally agree with that statement. While I liked the movie a lot of other people will hate it.

Hell, I got rude people in my crowd where half an hour in two people decided to just leave and yell out "F**K THIS MOVIE BITCHES!"

Especially not cool with me because most of the crowd was kids.
