For entire decades, Mel Brooks has hinted that someday he’d like to make a movie called “Spaceballs 3: The Search For Spaceballs 2.” But the search is over: he’s actually making a Spaceballs 2, so the real search will be for Spaceballs 3. A teaser was released on Brooks’ social media channels this morning, where a tilted Star Warsian text crawl lists all the sci-fi sequels and remakes that have come out in the last 38 years, including “2 Dunes, 7 Jurassic Parks and 2 Avatars plus Three Upcoming Avatars making Five Avatars.” But there has been only one Spaceballs, it says, until now. Brooks himself takes it from there… Spaceballs 2 will retain more of the original cast than you might expect! Mel has confirmed he’s putting the golden makeup back on to reappear as Yogurt (he did not confirm the dual role of President Skroob). Somehow Bill Pullman is returning as Lone Starr, but the craziest thing is that they’ve convinced Rick Moranis to once again don the dark helmet of Dark Helmet. I can't believe this is real. Spaceballs was one of my favorite movies growing up. I used to watch it on VHS with my older brother, and we’d laugh at the same jokes every time. Hearing that Rick Moranis is actually coming back as Dark Helmet feels unreal. That alone is worth the price of a ticket. I’m curious how they’ll bring everyone back after so long, but honestly, just seeing Lone Starr and Yogurt again will be enough for me. Mel Brooks is a legend and I trust his sense of humor, even now.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I respect Mel Brooks and the legacy of Spaceballs, but comedy has changed a lot since 1987. What was funny then might not work now, and I hope they don't just rely on old jokes or nostalgia. Rick Moranis coming back is impressive—he usually stays far away from the spotlight—but I wonder what made him say yes. I’ll keep my expectations cautious. If it turns out good, great. If not, at least the original will always be there.

I haven’t seen the original Spaceballs, just clips online. But I know it’s kind of a big deal to people who like old comedies. I like Josh Gad and Keke Palmer, though, so I’ll probably check this out when it comes out. I think it’ll be fun to see a sci-fi parody that’s not all Marvel jokes for once. I hope they make it funny for new audiences too, not just people who grew up with the first one.
