So this was from the Super Sentai Robot artbook.

Can someone tell what's the story behind this concept art for original power rangers mecha?

I'm doing a article for my typography class base on the super sentai so some great info would be helpful. Thanks

It was concept art for Zyu2. Instead of going with the ThunderZords, they were gonna make all new mecha, but didnt in the end.

It was going to be fore MMPR season 2, but they changed it and used the Dairanger mecha instead

the new footage that Toei filmed for PR season 2 was called Zyu2 in Japan

Actually, this was for the Zyu3 which was never filmed.
We already got the Zyu2 footage.

So basically these were supposed to be a new designs for the Zords in "Zyu2" but instead we got the Thunder Zords.

Really? I don't recall the design work making any departure from ZyuRanger standard in MMPR. Did they film extra mecha-battle footage using the original suits?

There were extra mecha and Ranger battles. In the Zyu 2 footage, you can see the blue ranger bringing new weapons and inventions to the battles and also every Ranger talking to their wrists. It also had a redone Megazord formation sequence, although the ranger and zord designs stayed the same. Of course, there were a bunch of new monsters too, which were used from the post Doomsday episodes up to the first half of season 2 (which was the reason they had to splice Dai robot footage initially, rather than just changing the scenes featuring the Rangers).
