Just saw Equilibrium.
Not a movie you have to see, but one you definately should see if you're indecisive and want to rent a movie that you can walk away with being fully satisfied.
I think the biggest hurtle for people who go into this movie for them to get past is the established world the story's being told in and the obvious Matrix influence.
Alot of critics are being dumbasses by tripping over this hurtle, getting stuck and crying about it while the rest of the movie runs ahead, having fun, telling a good story and accomplishing what it set out to do in a hail of bullet fire.
In the stunt, action and choreography department, I think the Matrix could've really learned a lesson or two and if they'd used this guys(Jim Vickers) and their sound guys, the Matrix sequals punches, kicks, and bullets would've hit home even harder and raised the bare over the last movie.
Matrix fight sequences were awesome, but I felt in the sequal it had all the impact of seeing Bruce Lee go off on a padded dummy. Here in Equilibrium every punch, kick, twist, and gun shot pounds through and cracks bone. You wince and marvel at the action in this picture.
Just before Christian Bale goes off and before you see the philosphy of Gun Kata being all geometrical, running probablity and maximizing movement, I could just here the voice of CB saying, "EAT MY GEOMETRY!!!!"
So see it if and when you can and watch out for that first hurtle that I got stuck behind at first. You start trying to ratinalize out too much what a society or person alone would be like without emotion and in all the characters who're doped on on emotion inhibators you clearly see emotion. Subtle, but it's there, otherwise they'd be zombies.
Just accept it and the premise and don't worry too much about it. Even better, the director explains in the "Making of" thing that's like.... 5 minutes, that the inhibator prohibits the highs and lows of emotions and feelings... not them all together. So there ya go right there.
That's my Haywardian Opinion and that's..... just how I feel. And if you got a problem with it..... BANG!
