Single Girl Only Sentais - Problem or No?

In turn, we don't have to accept their way of thinking, nor should we stop discussing stuff just because "it's not going to change"

People are already watching to see what Saban will do with the lack of girls in Go-Busters, since they never had to adapt a Sentai that started with 3 before. Which is all well and good but we've only just started Megaforce ...

I'm not sure what you are trying to say with that first sentence. Are you saying there should be more people in Japan speaking up if things aren't more PC for whatever petty reasons? Should we stop watching Sentai or other Toku if the male-to-female ratio isn't more evened out? You are right, there is no reason to stop discussing, I'm just not sure what you are saying.

As for the other point you made, yes, I totally understand that. I am wondering who will get gender bent in the Kyoryuger adaption. Maybe blue?

^ Yeah, I meant Saban's never had to do it, badly phrased

I never liked SunVulcan for reasons other than the lack of female members, but I do think it had some very good female roles for the villainesses, arguably better than some Sentai with two heroines ...

Not to mention Queen Hedrian. I love Sun Vulcan so far because it reminded me of the Silver Age comic book heroes with a twist of a little Bond. Though as others said, the camera work needs an improvement.

It doesn't matter if they were made "under Disney" or "Saban", because they're under the same company. Disney did both and also, it seemed that is Hexagon were to have been done, plans were for the same thing, and to introduce an American made female ranger with Crimson/Navy, though Green could've been made into one and be likelier. Anyways, its not the same Saban that made MMPR-WF , so the same can be argued that they never made a series before period and it sort of shows with how the show is anyways.

Ignoring technicalities, yeah, they never had to do a one girl team, but I'm not sure they'll make BusterBlue a girl sorely on the lack of precedent of having females outnumbering males in either Sentai or PR, though it would be refreshing if she was the big sister type like her Japanese counterpart with some Taylor mixed in. It would even out eventually with Gold and Silver as well, though I hope they bring Chip back as Gold and his character in general. Aka set it in Briarwood. Magic meets technology lol.

I wasn't criticising you, just saying that some people seem to get really angry at any discussion regarding sexism/other stuff in tokusatsu just because "Japanese people don't care about this." No, maybe they don't, but I still think it's a fair subject to talk about

I can't imagine that, maybe they'll just add a Fran or Dr K-like character to the supporting cast ...

I prefer two women on the team over one, definitely. It's true that one really well done likable character can make a show, but having two gives you better odds on succeeding there. Plus, maybe you'll get two great female characters out of it.

Now, this is another subtopic, but personally I'd like the cast to be a couple years older. More experience, better acting, etc. Graduate High School, and then star in a sentai show, ha anyways that's my take.

Speaking of comparing the sexes, the males cast are usually several years older than the females. That's a bit odd to me.

Uh.. what? That's not how I've always heard it and if they were the "same company", why would Saban have to re-license it like he did?

You know, I still don't get how having 2 females is less offensive than having 1. Never understood why those same people don't demand for an equal number of females at all times. Either way, the females are always outnumbered in Sentai.

In a 3-person squad, it's usually 2 males to 1 female.

In a lot of 5-person squads, it's 3 males to 2 females.

And considering many of the extra Rangers that join the team later are usually male, that makes even more males outnumbering the females.

And lazycoconut does have a point, even though I was mostly joking about that gender bending line. Power Rangers has gender bended many rangers through history, but they managed to stop doing that in Dino Thunder and RPM. So maybe they are beginning to see what people like me have been saying from the start, the numbers don't matter that much. Maybe it is about how each character is written, or maybe they understand that there IS such a thing as being too PC.

Two is more than one, it's twice the representation. Being under 50% doesn't make 20% the same as 40%. It's easy to see why some would prefer two over one. Though sure, three would be cool sometime as well.

Personally, I don't think encouraging having two female members on a team of five is "too PC", and to me the term PC isn't really that applicable here.

But outside of that issue, a lot of fans would just like to see more female characters, for character variety or other reasons. There are plenty of legitimate artistic reasons to have more than one female character.

I think the reason Disney didn't genderswap anyone in RPM was because they knew from the Go-onger footage that another girl would join the team later. I don't know about Ninja Storm, I heard they were originally considering making the Navy Ranger female, but didn't. I wish they had, because Hunter and Blake got some pretty bad characterisation and when the writing was at its worst they were barely distinguishable from each other.

The reason I find it offensive is because it suggests the character's gender is the only thing that's really important about her. With guys, you have "the leader", "the strong one," "the smart one," "the silly one," etc. They all have their own personalities, and then you have "The Girl." That's it. That's all she does. With more than one, they're individuals, they have to have different personalities. They count as people, not just a stereotype.

You do make a lot of good points, but I wasn't saying 2 females is too PC. I was mostly talking about the kinds of people most likely to get offended if there aren't more females getting equal representation. The soccer moms demanding more kid-friendly censorship and equality for everyone, etc. The same ones who get tunnel vision and only see the heroes because they'll get the most screen time, not even bothering to see how well they implement support characters or how well any of the characters are written.

Again, tunnel vision. Not saying you don't have a point, lazycoconut, but we really should give more credit to how well characters are written and implemented. Even if there is one female among the heroes, that same female could steal the show if done right. I'm not the first one to be saying that in this topic, so what I am repeating should have some merit to it.

I still prefer female Rangers to female supporting characters because at least the Ranger is fighting, not just on the sidelines while the guys do all the heroics.

I agree that you have a point, but while a lot of older Sentai had a strong lone heroine, I think that is more to do with those shows having generally better writing and more time to focus on characterisation instead of toys. Since Gaoranger, when the shows became a lot more merch-heavy, lone girls in Sentai have ranged from good (Ranru) to OK (GaoWhite, Yoko) to not great (Ran, Nanami.)
