Great movie though. Now we can just forget that the Gavan movie and Super Hero Taisen Z ever happened. I sure hope all of this is leading up to some kind of team-up movie project with all three Space Sheriffs.

The best scenes in this movie are when Kai doesn't back down because he's "a Space Sheriff", that slow walking Sekisha scene, and that final Laser Blade, but the icing on the cake was when Den called Kai Sharivan. That scene happened just like I imagined how the passing of the torch would be like, really cool.



I'm not so sure I like this guy though.... lol. :laugh:

I'm surprised I liked the Sharivan movie as much as I did. It's like everything the Gavan movie did wrong, this did right.

Vibe I got from the whole thing was of a 1970s detective series, which really worked for it.

I remember hearing (though perhaps it was only fans' wishful thinking) with the Gavan movie that if it was successful, it could lead to a show revival.

Could that be true for these? The way it is in this, with Gavan, Sharivan, and Shaider's individual cases coming together with the thing with Horror Girl could work in a series environment, either with them as a team working together, or similarly, with their independent cases causing team ups between them every so often.

Finally got around to watching the Sharivan movie. What a disappointment. It was like a bad Dekaranger episode focused on Houji. (Actually, it was exactly like a Dekaranger episode focused on Houji -- the one with his traitorous pal Beano. I think Beano might have even made the same speech to Houji about why he went bad that Seigi made to Kai. I know Aburera said similar stuff in the Deka finale, too.)

-How obnoxious was Ryouma Baba in this movie? Geez. These movies are for the older fans, but Baba was acting like he was in some lame-ass Tokyo Dome appearance, playing it up for the little kids in front. Don't ever use anyone from Go-busters again, Toei.

-Shou Tomita was underused, once again. He and Aileen were a couple of the only good things this movie had going for it.

-Kouichiro Nishi seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but this movie. Also: it was pointless naming him General Gaira. Ooh, Naruhisa Arakawa read the Sharivan Wiki!

-How obnoxious was this flimsy, hollow script treating the viewer like an idiot, and also having the characters act like idiots in order to stretch a five minute story into 60 minutes? Repetition and obvious, obvious "twists" or stupid oversights by characters just dragged things out. I'm disappointed in Arakawa. Again, these movies are for the adult fans, but Arakawa was writing it like he was talking down to five year olds.

-How stupid was the cartoon Mortal Kombat blood -- especially when they would draw it on the camera, like it was splashing onto the camera? :laugh: Stupid.

-I think Koichi Sakamoto was not the right choice to direct this movie. Use him as an action director, fine, but not a director. This movie obviously wanted to be deadly serious, and really needed a kind of Shin Kamen Rider/Lady Battle Cop/Hakaider dark and gritty feel to it, not a Time Force with Kool-Aid blood feel. Sakamoto likes bright and fluffy (no doubt thanks to Power Rangers). He can't get good performances from people, because he doesn't seem to care about that kind of ****. He wants a big, sparkly spectacle; he doesn't care about performances or characters or emotion. He wants EXPLOSIONS! and SHAKY CAM! and CARTOON BLOOD! and LEGS! and AWFUL J.J. ABRAMS LENS FLARES! Sakamoto should be directing Kabutack The Next Generation, not Space Sheriffs.

-It also kind of depresses me that Sakamoto just uses his own stunt guys when the JAC/JAE were such a big part of the original Space Sheriff shows...

Final rating: F-minus. I'd like to like these movies, I think updating the Space Sheriffs with an emphasis on the cop side of things is a cool idea, but Toei's gone about it in a horrible way. But, hey, at least Riki Miura woke up for this one.

I don't look forward to Shaider. I can't stand Iwanaga, and I think he's really miscast. And, on top of that, Sakamoto says the Shaider movie is a "comedy," and Sakamoto comedy is Bulk and Skull non-comedy.

Agree with Shougo there, Sharivan was obnoxious melodrama and shows how inept Sakamoto is as anything but an action coordinator.

And after watching Shaider, I can indeed confirm its way fucking worse. Both of these movies are extremely chauvinistic as **** on top of it, even by Koichi Sakamoto's abysmal standards, especially with Shaider's bullshit tsundere romance that modern anime industry sneezes out every season.

Really, modern anime industry is a good way to describe Koichi Sakamoto's works: All fluff, but nothing in terms of actual ideas, thought, or human emotion.
Just masturbatory chic that is even hard to enjoy as stupid-fun at this point with how condescending it is.

I agree that Sakamoto's range is limited, but I don't think what you say there about the tone of the movie is right. They wouldn't have bothered nods of the Space Sheriffs over exposition in the dialogue and the entire "mask" of the Estavan character if they wanted an actual dark and serious tone. Shin Kamen Rider didn't have Shin making big hand gestures in order to transform (Even "The First" removed that!).

They wanted to play around with a dark story and use the fact that they were targeting an older audience, but they also wanted to make it feel like a space sheriff entry, not a "serious" reboot/reimagination movie. Really, I'd say that the "W Returns Kamen Rider Eternal" movie is closer to what you get when you get Sakamoto to attempt to direct an actual "dark story" played straight for older fans and the problems there show his limitations more in that direction.
