Sentai's Action Choreography vs. PR's Action Choreography

PR choreography? Feh... It's always a sequence of poorly done punches and kicks followed by a ZOMG FLYING SPINNING XMA KICK WHILE EVERYTHING EXPLODES!!!!!11111one1 At least, that's how it is now. Even when Saban was in charge I thought it looked pretty lame. There was just too much focus on making everyone do flashy kicks and handsprings without bothering to make the fight look good. It looked more like a gymnastics show than anything.

That because some of the actors and actresses in the Saban-era of the Power Ranger were professional gymnists. For example, David Yost/Billy and Amy Jo Johnson/Kimberly. While everyone else had to learn to do martial arts, except Jason David Frank/Tommy, Austin St. John/Jason, and Johnny Yong Bosch/Adam because they had some experience in Martial Arts.

When PR gets it good, it's wonderful.

Even PROO had some nice tidbits. Personally I liked the fight Will had against Kamdor when they found the third jewel. I found the use of the Defender Vest, almost as a weapon, to be very innovative.

And one of my favorite PR fight was in Mystic Fate part 1 (Koragg VS Wolf Warrior) so it's not always bad.

Well, with the exception of Tommy's dream fight against his original ranger forms, Will and Kamdor's final battle as well as Mack and Moltor's final duel and "Koragg" vs. "Wolf Warrior," I don't think that the other fighting choreographies in this era of the Power Rangers really workout for me.

I personally find Power Rangers' action choreography more fun to watch, but thuth be told, GekiRanger is the first of the small number of Sentai Series that I've seen, that I really loved the fights.

I want to check out some of the work from the guy Shougo mentioned.

Totally agree with you. I'd like to add Dekaranger to that list especially when Ban and his guns were involved.

Here is how I rank them:

1. Sentai Choreography
2. PR Choreography (Saban Era)
....
1000. PR Choreography (Disney Era)

Sentai Choreography is more fluid and intense. Also, the explosions are used at the right places. Sometimes it gets cheesy, but thats bound to happen. The fights usually go with the storyline and help it move along. Even the unhenshined fight scenes are okay.

Saban Era Choreography was great for the actors, but early on, during like MMPR S2, the American-footage of morphed fight sequences kinda sucked. But, from Zeo to Time Force, the morphed fights always seemed to fit right, like the Sentai footage. There werent as many explosions and wire-fu. The wire-fu used was few and far between. And the stunt actors used were really good. And, the fact that they actually looked for actors who could fight to some degree really showed what the company was looking for and what they were aiming to achieve. It made the whole show more believable when you see the actor fighting, then he morphs and continues to fight. For instance, Rocky is much more convincing as a Red Ranger than Mack because of the fact that he can fight, bringing a continuity to the mix.

Which brings me to the Disney Era choreography. I cannot think of a good reason as to why Koichi (who is really to blame for the explosions that have been nick-named "Kalishplosions") uses soo many friggin pryotechnics. They are totally unnecessary about 80 percent of the time, and are always placed in the wrong position, taking away from what little reality this show is based on. When a ranger is fired with a laser, we dont need to see 4 perfectly lined explosions 50 ft away. just a few sparks on the suit will do fine and gets the point across. The wire-fu is annoying, but its mostly due to a mis-use of the technique. I mean, it was used in many HK movies like Fearless but when it was used, it was used in a way to sort of enhance the effect of the move. Not to totally go against reality and have someone flying in the air for 30 seconds for no reason at all. If it is used right, the choreography would be greatly benefited. And, I believe that the stunt people used are really talented. They can pull of some insane moves. It is the choreographer and director that is totally misusing their abilities. Thats why most of the fights look out of place. And the fact that the actors cant fight doesnt help. The stunt doubles are used profusely and have to constantly cover their faces in every shot. It gets tiring very quickly. If Disney just toned it down a few notches, the show would be more tolerable. I mean, that is why we watch it right? For the fights. If they suck, then whats the point.

Yeah, I am with you on that Inui. I mean if the director and the choreographer keep mis-using the explosion and wire works at the wrong place and at the wrong time, then what the hell is the whole point for Disney to even bother making the Power Rangers???? It's like they don't even bother trying to make the show more convincing than it was in the Saban-era. All Disney ever cared about was the money. If I was in charge of Disney, I tell it straight to those bums faces that this show is all the hard work and dedication to the fans, not all about the bells and the whistles.

Example: "Death to Smoochy." Edward Norton did set a good example of how the entertainment industry should do business and he didn't care about what kind of de-moralized nonsense were sent to kids, all he cared about was making the kids believe in what reality will through at them when they grow up.

See back in the day, like when the season 2 cast change happened, kicking ass was part of the audition.

Uh-huh, I most certainly agree with you on that.
