Episode 15: Khelfark’s 7

~~~
The sunlight poured into the ship. Khelfark felt Xaneria cling tighter to him. His hand went to the holster of his blaster, but alas it had long since burnt out, just like everything else they had onboard. His second-in-command, Jadrian, was gripped his snake-spear against his chest.
“Yeq, Fol-Gothu,†he whispered as the aliens peered in at them with a mixture of awe and possibly fear. Apart from their pink skin, round ears and strangely coloured hair, they were not vastly different to the crew. Khelfark stepped forward first, and he activated his translator necklace. The series of vocal scanners that lined it lit up with a faint, blue glow, and then turned dark. The aliens stepped in, and one offered its fleshy hand. Khelfark, confused at this odd behaviour, stared. The alien clasped both its hands together around his, and began to shake it gently. By the excited smile on its face, Khelfark played along. Maybe this was a greeting of sorts.
“Here they come,†said Caster as the boat came to the shore and the researchers stepped out. The aliens followed, and the crowd erupted in surprised cries. These things were tall (the smallest was at least six feet while the biggest was a staggering eight), with broad shoulders, slender bodies and long fingers. Their ears were elfin, their eyes were pure amber, with neither iris nor pupil. Their hair silky in appearance and cascaded past their shoulders in blue showers. They were dressed in form-fitting pale yellow suits with brown pointed boots. Around each one’s neck was a grey band connected to a single earpiece by a thin cable. One of them was holding a wavy, black spear tightly.
“My God, look at them,†said Belle, “they’re…well…they’re beautiful. This is a true turning point in Earth’s history.â€
“That one at the front with the goatee has got to be their leader,†Caster assessed. There were seven in total, and judging by certain anatomical similarities between them and humans, three were female. As the aliens came onto shore, a familiar figure seemed to materialise out of the crowd. A plump man with brown hair in a pompadour haircut, sparkling green eyes and sticky-out ears, and he was dressed in an orange business suit and purple tie.
“Greetings,†he said gleefully, offering his hand. “I do hope you can understand what I’m saying. My name is Robert Pertwee, the Prime Minister of Great Britain.â€
“I am Captain Khelfark Tavon,†the lead alien replied, accepting the Prime Minister’s hand shake. “It is a pleasure to meet you. These are my crew, second-in-command Jadrian Rojj, medical officer Xaneria Restal, science officer Stimma Stang, engineer Gluta Hertz and her older brother, navigator Iasus, and pilot Nuema Nora.â€
At the back of the crowd, the five Anglomen, even the normally straight-faced Alan, were mesmerised by the extraordinary visitors.
“The Sovereign Caleigo are gonna wet their pants when they see this,†said Rowan.
“Whole world’s gonna wet its pants,†replied Beth. “Let’s get a closer look!â€
With that, she charged through the crowd, leaving the others in her dust. Scott shook his head and said, “Is it me or is she moving faster than usual?â€
“It’s the excitement,†said Alan, “and hormones.â€
XXX
“I don’t like this, Tavon,†whispered Jadrian Rojj. “These ‘Earthlings’ are way too welcoming.â€
“Maybe not every alien race is as hostile as the Makabi, Jadrian,†replied Khelfark. “You’re too paranoid.â€
“Those younglings,†said Stimma Stang. “They’re radiating with some powerful kind of energy I’m not familiar with.†Stimma had the astounding power to detect radiation by a rare genetic miracle known to their race as a megene. “I don’t think it’s dangerous, but it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.â€
“Fol-Gothu, Stimma, don’t you get it?†Jadrian hissed. “This whole planet is dangerous.â€
“Please, Jadrian, calm down,†Khelfark groaned. “You’re only acting like this because none of us have eaten in days.â€
The seven aliens had been immediately taken to a place called ‘Sub-Camelot’ by Prime Minister Robert Pertwee, Dr. Grant Caster and the mysterious girl known only as Belle. Between the leading three and the visiting seven, were the five younglings, who were associated by reasons they had yet to figure out. Nuema, the youngest of their brood at just four (ayers, not years), was standing close to the dark-haired boy Alan, who was tall of build anyway so there was not much difference between them. Gluta Hertz was eyeing the odd devices they wore on their wrists. She had not seen anything quite like those before, and there was no suitable purpose she could work out other than decoration. The group stopped in front of a door and Caster fiddled with something in his coat.
“Professor, where exactly are we going?†asked Khelfark.
“Well…we thought it’d be best to bring you down here until you’re recovered your strength,†replied Caster. “Let you enjoy a few Earth conveniences before we go public, if you don’t mind, I mean. Do you intend to stay?â€
“I’m not sure,†Khelfark said honestly. “But some time to recuperate would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.â€
As the humans and aliens talked, someone with sinister intentions watched with the aid of a small camera drone set up on the roof of Roald Dahl Plass. He had been awaiting the arrival of a brand new army for years. A chance to rid the world of its empires and bring all the continents together as the much-theorised ‘super-nation’…those creatures were the key to it. He was certain. Taking a bite from the sticky bun he was holding, he pondered all the possibilities. Wasn’t there a new protest group that had cropped up ever sice the appearance of the Darkshot not long ago? Yes, and they were led by one particular woman. Overzealous as she was, she had a few people following her, and that made her an excellent pawn. Picking up the phone, he dialled a number and put the receiver to his ear.
“Hello? Can I speak to a Ms. Shirley Jameson?â€
Episode 16: The An-ex-ter Faction
~~~

The political attack was swift and brutal. From out of nowhere, a union calling themselves the Anti Extra Terrestrial Faction (An-ex-ter for short), released a video of the arrival of Khelfark Tavon’s crew to the press, a video they should never have possessed. Their leader was a witch called Shirley Jameson, who had never married and spent her life hating what she saw as immoral, including but not limited to: mature television, ‘obscene’ publications, inter-racial relationships, rock, heavy metal and rap music, comic books, nudity in pictures, young people being able to drive vehicles before the age of 18, homosexuals, bisexuals, men doing women’s work, small children in general, Asians, blacks and Jews, among many more (the list could go on for hours, possibly days, really). Now, she stood at a podium on a makeshift stage outside King’s Cross Station, with a television beside her showing the video on a loop, shouting anti-alien gibberish through a megaphone.

“The government says that these aliens pose no threat!†she bellowed. “Well I say we should not take risks! We live in an Empire that has brought law, order and peace all over the world! Our new elite soldiers, the Royal Squadron Angloman, have been fighting against aliens and supernatural threats for the past few weeks, to keep our world safe from invaders from outer space, yet here we are, welcoming, yes, welcoming these brain-sucking moonies onto our shores! Who knows what germs could be polluting the waters of Cardiff Bay right now, making 1997’s Operation: Cleanout in vain!â€

XXX

In his office, Caster and Belle watched the report on the small television in the corner with disgust and concern. Something or somebody new arrives, and immediately prejudiced radicals begin crawling out of the woodwork. Shirley Jameson, aged 60, had been a thorn in many people’s sides for years, but now she had actually found something to cement herself in the public eye. He was thankful that Khelfark’s crew were not aware of this. They could try and quell this uprising before it was too late. Or so they thought.

“Where are they right now?†he asked Belle.

“I believe the Anglomen took them out to show them the city.â€

“WHAT?!â€

Caster leapt over his desk and grabbed his white coat from the rack. “We have to get to them before Shirley Jameson does!â€

When Ivy Rosewater and her two alien companions arrived at Topshop with her, the attendants looked completely shocked, but Ivy had told them quite frankly, “They’re just foreign visitors, and since they’re not doing anything wrong, you don’t have a reason to worry.†This logic had calmed the staff, but did not completely ease them. Strangely enough though, when Khelfark had forgotten to do up the shirt Ivy bought him in the adjacent Topman, a few women had wolf-whistled at him, and one referred to his translator necklace and earpiece as ‘potentially trendy.’ Even the manager had not gone and reported this to the authorities – saying a member of the influential Rosewater family shopped there was always good for the ol’ reputation, especially considering how much she was buying. Presently, they were stepping out into the street in fashionable clothes, carrying paper bags brimming with more, when someone shouted, “Moonies there!†and a crowd immediately started to flock around them. Some were trying to get at Khelfark and Xaneria, while others were trying to break those up.

“Leave them alone!†snapped Ivy. “They’re not hurting anybody!â€

“Ms. Rosewater!†someone shoved a microphone in her face. “Dan Dynamic from The Daily Star, did the aliens suck your brain at any point?â€

“What?!†Ivy grabbed the microphone and shouted loudly into it. “Get this into your heads you racist bastards! Khelfark, Xaneria and the others are not evil! They’re my friends! LEAVE THEM ALONE!â€

“Ms. Rosewater!â€
“Evil aliens!â€
“Ms. Rosewater!â€
“Brain-sucking moonies!â€
“Monsters!â€
“Ms. Rosewater!â€

“GO AWAY!†Ivy screamed. The ground suddenly shook, knocking everyone off their feet. Anglo Black was standing there, his fist against the pavement. Ivy breathed a sigh of relief.

“The aliens are in the custody of the government,†he said with authority. “They are to be left alone. I will escort them out of here.†As Ivy and her companions came closer, he said quietly so only she heard, “Professor Caster’s waiting for us round the corner, and he’s fuming. Just dragged me and Nuema out of The Talisman.†Ivy gulped. Caster in a bad mood didn’t bode well, but at least they were out of that horrible situation from before.

“Where are the others?†asked Khelfark.

“Not sure,†replied Black. “They’re using the A.D.M. to track them down.â€

“Why are we being persecuted like this?†asked Xaneria.

“It’s called racism,†said Ivy grimly. “It’s everywhere.â€

XXX

Gluta Hertz screamed as the mad axe-man leapt out of the darkness at her, his heavy blade raised and ready to swing down and cut off her head.

“Don’t hurt me!†she squealed. The axe-man slunk back into the shadows, and she lowered her hands with a quizzical look on her face. “It worked?â€

“Relax,†said Rowan, who stood behind her with Iasus. “Nothing can hurt you in here, it’s all animatronic. Entertainment.â€

“This is entertainment on your planet?†Iasus questioned, pointing to the man on the rack as his limbs were torn brutally from their sockets.

“I guess so,†said Rowan. “I know it’s weird to you two, but people like getting scared, and there’s no place better for that than the London Dungeon.â€

“I didn’t know they made an alien exhibit,†somebody said. Gluta turned, feeling something tug at the combat trousers Rowan had found for her. A little girl, no older than three or four, grinned up at her. Behind the girl stood her mother.

“I’m not an exhibit, I’m real,†said Gluta. At this, the mother screamed, “Aliens! It’s true!†and grabbed her daughter, fleeing. Gluta felt a sting in her heart. What had she done wrong? “Rowan…I want to leave now.â€

“Yeah, that’s fine,†Rowan agreed. He shouted after the mother, “You fat bitch!â€

Throughout the group, a new restlessness had settled in. The hate had begun, and behind the curtains of this miserable show, a man called the Elephant laughed gleefully. His plan would come to fruition soon enough.

XXX

Night fell, and in the bedrooms they had been provided at Sub-Camelot, the 7 were starting to like this world less and less. Iasus tried to console a hurt Gluta, Nuema Nora kept to herself but was confused, Stimma Stang observed the situation with icy, calculating indifference, and Jadrian Rojj knew in his mind that he had been right all along. Khelfark Tavon held Xaneria Restal close.

“What did we do so wrong to these people?†she whispered.

“I wish I knew,†honded. “Maybe…maybe Jadrian was right about them…â€

“But what can we do?â€

“Plenty,†said a voice. “Don’t bother looking around, I’m communicating with you through telepathy. If you wish to find sanctuary, more than what your friends can give you, then come to the entrance of Sub-Camelot. I promise you.â€

“Should we go?â€

“…I think so.â€

Episode 17: Enter the Elephant

~~~
The 7 were gathered outside the entrance of Big Ben, awaiting the one who had contacted them. Nobody was out in the streets, they were unsure whether to feel safe or not. True, none of those hateful people from earlier were around, but it did not feel right, standing alone in the darkness on an alien world. Jadrian’s spear was ready in case of danger, and Stimma’s hand hovered lightly over the pos-pistol he had hidden in his uniform. Khelfark stood protectively in front of his crew as a long, white vehicle (a stretch limousine actually) pulled up a few yards away. A back door opened, and out stepped a large, round man with neat, shoulder-length hair and a thick, black beard. He was wearing an expensive, grey suit and white gloves with a variety of jewel-encrusted gold rings on top. Clutched in his hands was an ebony cane with a silver cone on the bottom and an ivory handle on the top. He smiled at them pleasantly, and his green eyes shone with glee.
“Good to see you are all here,†he greeted them.
“Are you the one who called to us?†asked Khelfark.
“I am,†said the bald man. “My associates call me ‘the Elephant’. But let’s not linger with unnecessary introductions. I’m here to offer you all a deal. I have the resources to help you retrieve and restore your ship to working order. You can get off this planet and find a better place to settle.â€
“Tempting, but it’s not the first time we’ve been tricked,†Jadrian snorted. “What makes you trustworthy? Don’t mistake our naivety regarding this world for gullibility.â€
Elephant tapped his cane on the ground twice, and his eyes flashed. A wave of calmness flowed out of him and passed over the alien travellers, and images sank into their minds. The psychic brainwashing lasted less than a second, but the feeling of tranquillity settled. Elephant’s lips curled into a smile and he offered them his hand.
“Come.â€
And so they did.
XXX
Grant Caster banged his head against the wall in frustration. This was getting to be absolutely ridiculous. Bad enough An-ex-ter had invaded media output, but now the 7 had just disappeared into thin air! He had all five Anglomen patrolling the streets of London right now, along with MI-5 search-teams, and through the influence of Brigadier G, squadrons of the Metropolitan Police. Yet after a week of searching, they had found nothing. Caster’s bruised forehead throbbed as it met with the metal wall of the Anglobase room again and again.
“Please, sit down,†said Belle, standing nearby, “you need to be able to think straight.â€
“You’re right,†Caster sighed, and took a seat at the nearby table. Belle placed a cup of tea in front of him, which he downed in a single draught.
Up above them, the screen of the A.D.M. flashed and was filled with an image of Anglo Red’s face.
“Anglo Red to Anglobase,†the team’s field-leader’s voice travelled out of the intercom.
“This is Anglobase,†Belle answered. “What have you found, Scott?â€
“Believe it or not, I just received a message from MI-5’s Psytek-Division,†he explained. “They’re detecting massive spikes of psychic energy coming from somewhere on Pharaoh’s Island. Do you want me to investigate?â€
“It could be a lead,†said Belle, “meet up with Beth and head there immediately. Alert us if anything happens.â€
“Roger. Red out.â€
Anglo Red’s face disappeared from the screen and once more it displayed a radar map of London, with five coloured dots representing the locations of the five knights. Belle placed her hand on her father’s shoulder and squeezed it reassuringly, “We’ll find them, Father, I promise.â€
XXX
Pharaoh’s Island was one of the chain of small blots of land decorating the River Thames. Situated not far from Shepperton Lock in Surrey, the island was once the fishing retreat of Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson, given to him as a reward for winning the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Anglo Red and Anglo Yellow arrived via speedboat, as a satellite beamed the precise location of the psychic spikes directly to their helmet visors.
“Well, this is just great,†Yellow snorted. “We have a whole damn island to explore!â€
“You’re such a pessimist,†Red muttered, cautiously walking until the dot on the visor was in the middle.
There’s the pot calling the kettle black, Yellow thought, following him. Red hunkered down and stroked the grass with his gloved hand. After about five minutes of this repetitive action, he touched something that did not belong. He let out a triumphant, “A-ha!â€
“What is it?†asked Yellow, walking closer. She had been inspecting a carving on a tree that read ‘PAT + RACHEL.’ Normally such things did not interest her, though this looked like it had been burnt in by some kind of laser! Red brushed away the last of the soil to reveal what appeared to be metal plating.
“I think it’s a trap door,†he said, “but there’s no sign of an opening.â€
“Stand aside,†said Yellow. She rubbed her hands together and held them out in front of her. The palms of her gloves glowed brightly, and streams of electrical power flowed out, striking the shiny metal and blowing it wide open. Red staggered to his feet, surprised, and turned to look at her. “Where’d you learn to do that?!â€
“Time for that later,†said Yellow. She took her communicator out from her belt buckle and opened it, “Anglo Yellow to Anglobase, located what could be a hidden bunker on Pharaoh’s Island. Send Blue, Black and Pink in after us.â€
“Roger,†said Belle’s voice. Yellow holstered the communicator and hopped down the hole. Red hesitated, then followed her. They would both wish they had waited. No sooner did Yellow’s feet touch the ground, when something struck her in the stomach and sent her crashing into the wall. Standing there in the darkness was a Chinese man built like an Olympian. He was completely bald, the dome of his head was dull with brown scars, he had long fangs and pointed ears. He was dressed in a black leather uniform with brown gloves and metal caps on his knuckles, elbows and knees. This Savage Sino growled and slowly began to advance on the two heroes, as mechanical workings inside him whirred and clicked.
Red glanced at the prone Yellow, and with a mental command, summoned his sword Arthur to his hands. He charged at the huge opponent, who simply grabbed his wrists in one massive hand on the descent. As Red struggled to get free, the giant twisted his wrists until the sword fell free, and promptly threw him as hard as he could down the shadow-filled corridor beyond. Yellow had taken the time to recover and threw a ball of white-hot electricity straight into the Savage Sino’s chest, blowing him into and then through the wall.
“Scott!†Yellow looked at her friend. “You keep going, I’ll keep him busy until the others arrive.â€
“Be careful, Beth,†said Red. There was no point arguing, she’d only make him regret it, but as he tore off round the corner, he could not help but feel the foreboding knife twist in his guts. For the first time, the inside of his helmet was hot, musty. Sweat trickled down his forehead. The internal life support systems adjusted themselves and a cooling breeze flowed over his face from some hidden generator. A radar screen displayed across his visor told him there were life signs just around the next corner. Lots of them. He skidded to a halt in the doorway of a vast chamber. People in dark blue boiler suits, whom he guessed to be technicians, stopped and looked at him. High above, a fat man in grey stood on a metal catwalk, twirling a cane. The cetre of the chamber was taken up by a huge, black, perfectly smooth pyramid with a winking robotic eye on top. The 7 were chained naked along one side, wires attached to their antennae fed an unseen pulse into the pyramid.
“It seems we have a visitor,†the man known as the Elephant tittered, “welcome, good sir, to the Space Bridge.â€
Episode 18: Battle Beneath the Island
~~~

“Space Bridge?†Red looked up at the pyramid’s all-seeing eye, and then at the 7. A mist seemed to rise within him, an angry, scarlet mist. Clutching Arthur tightly, he glared at the man called the Elephant and demanded, “What are you doing to my friends?!â€

“Your ‘friends’ are all very powerful psychics,†said the Elephant, “and by combining their telepathic auras with my own and the extra-dimensional metals collected within the pyramid, well…just watch, it’s so much more fun.â€

The Elephant turned to look up at the pyramid. He held his hands out in front of him, fingers locked, and closed his eyes. Immediately, Red felt the temperature in the room drop by what seemed like a billion degrees. The 7’s bodies glowed, and they started to struggle and cry out in their bindings as the pyramid sucked away at their very souls, turning them into living batteries.

“STOP IT!†Red started to run towards the stairs that led up to the catwalk, but the technicians in dark blue moved as one man and their combined weight pinned him. He tried to raise his temperature enough to burn them, but they wouldn’t budge. Maybe they were too loyal to their boss, or maybe their suits were totally heat-proof. Whatever it was, he couldn’t move an inch. He squirmed indignantly, but it was futile. Up above, the Elephant’s mouth pulled up into a grin, and veins pulsed on the surface of his bald head. The eye opened wider and then flattened out grotesquely, become a perfect circle. Its mad pupil expanded to cover the grey iris and then the white. Stars appeared in the blackness, and the rim of it glowed a hot pink.

“What…what is that?!†Red exclaimed.

“A portal to the Heart of Heliok,†said the Elephant, “a pocket dimension composed entirely of psychoplasmic currents magnetised around a small hollow core. Only a select few have gazed into it and gained all the knowledge of our universe…and until now, no psychic was powerful or fearless enough to absorb it all and bring it back to this world. It drove them mad. The first of those few could only begin to say its name before it tore his mind asunder. Thus was born the story of…Hell.â€

“You opened a portal to Hell?!†Red gritted his teeth and put all his strength into lifting himself. “And you think I’ll let you unleash it on the world?! I’ll stop you!â€

“Please, dear boy,†the Elephant laughed, “do you think I would have let you set foot here and tell you about my plans…if there was anything you could do to stop it? Until my psychic aura passes the portal’s rim, it will stay open permanently.â€

The 7 screamed again, and the mist engulfed Red’s vision utterly. He roared, and the power of the Athzeron coursing through his veins began to gather in his chest. In his heart. Another roar, this one not of a human, but of a beast. His muscles expanded like inflating tyres, meters on the inside of his visor beeped erratically, warning of danger. He was overheating. His whole body was on fire. Microscopic holes opened along the surface of his suit and white hot flames issued forth, scattering and incinerating the technicians holding him prisoner. His mind was filled not with a human’s rage, but a lion’s determination. The King of the Beasts, Lord of the Animal Kingdom.

“Oh, it’s going to be like that…†the Elephant began to descend telekinetically from the catwalk, when a hole blew open in the wall and a hunk of burning metal and flesh hit him like a missile. Yellow led Blue, Black and Pink into the room, along with a team of police officers. Black had personally ripped the Savage Sino’s cyborg head from his shoulders and thrown it. On Blue’s orders, the police chased down and rounded up the remaining living technicians while the colour-coded heroes approached their uncontrollable comrade.

“Free the 7!†he shouted before any of them could speak. “Do it now!†He pointed a gloved finger at the Elephant, who was staggering back up onto his feet. “He’s mine!â€

“Bring it on,†the Elephant hissed. He held his cane out like a rifle and the silver cone started to twirl, slowly at first, then rapidly until it gave off a pale yellow light. A burst of laser-light shot from the tip, which Red deflected with Arthur’s blade. The heat given off by the hero and the sword created an almost volcanic feeling to the chamber, a far cry from the polar temperature of before. Too hot for the police to get close enough to intervene, no matter how much they tried.

Black scaled the side of the pyramid to where Nuema Nora lay chained, naked and barely conscious. He ignored the smooth, delicate curves of her green body as he wrapped his fists around her bindings and pulled until they snapped with a single tearing groan. As the chains fell, the rest of the 7 could go free, and the four Anglomen aided them down to the ground. Black looked at a policeman, “Get them outside, give them blankets and take them to the hospital.â€

“We could have a run in with the An-ex-ter Faction,†the policeman warned him.

“If you do,†Black’s voice lowered in pitch, “tell their leader that I’ll snap her spine across my knee if my friends don’t make it.â€

“…Understood, sir,†the policeman gulped, and gently took Nuema from him. The alien girl managed to glance up at his dark visor, and smiled tiredly, before allowing herself to fall asleep. Turning away from her, Black looked up, as the battle between Anglo Red and the Elephant had ascended to the metal catwalk. Flames still issued forth from the scarlet soldier in waves, and the psychic villain seemed to be shielding himself with a manic rainbow aura.

“We have to get up there,†said Pink, “he may need our help.â€

“We can’t even get near them,†replied Yellow. “Am I the only one who can feel the pressure coming from all that energy?â€

“If this keeps up, they’ll blow themselves to smithereens,†said Blue. “I’m not going to let my friend get killed!†In a flash of light, he summoned his battleaxe Algovale and threw it up with all his strength. Algovale flew spinning into the fray and struck the Elephant across the arm before returning to its master’s hand. The Elephant cursed and covered his wound with his free hand, giving Red the time to knock away his deadly cane-weapon. Blue looked at Algovale, and gasped. Simply being near Red’s aura had reduced it to a gooey blue stick with smoke hissing from its surface.

“Christ on a bender,†he whispered.

The Elephant reached out and wrapped both his shining fists around Red’s neck. Red grabbed one of the offending arms, and used his free hand to scoop up his enemy’s collar.

“You said that once your psychic aura passed that portal it would be sealed,†said the Angloman.

“I know where this is going,†the Elephant sneered, “but once I pass through it, I’ll just absorb everything inside and return here, leaving you to waste away in the void.â€

“We’ll have to see about that…I hope you’re ready, we’re going to be fighting for a long, long time.â€

Red planted one foot firmly onto the catwalk and propelled himself into the air, dragging the Elephant with him. They twirled about, still locked in battle, and their bodies fell past the rim of the pyramid’s eye, not even leaving a last word to the screaming Anglomen down below. The portal released a loud, satisfied hum, and closed, perhaps forever.

Yellow’s knees buckled and she fell to the ground, a tear running down her cheek. Blue knelt to embrace her, as Black and Pink only stared dumbly at the spot where the eye once was. The pyramid was turning from ebony to grey, as if it were dying. Very likely it was, because Anglo Red had disrupted it, damaged it, by falling into the void first and dragging its master with him. The Heart of Heliok. Hell. The thought made them all sick. Yellow pulled off her helmet and lobbed it across the room so she could throw up onto the floor.

The sky turned dark and sad, feeling the pain of its children below, because an old, dear friend was gone…forever…

Episode 19: Changing of the Guard

~~~
“Where do we go from here?â€
Nobody could answer Iasus Hertz’s question. They had nowhere to go, no home world left, and they were hated here. Thanks to them, one of their friends was dead, never to return. As they stared out across the great imperial city of London, standing atop Buckingham Palace, they could not find comfort.
“Why do you have to go?†asked someone behind them. Ivy Rosewater, accompanied by Princess Angeline Goddard, emerged through the skylight and walked over to them.
“If we stay here, more people will get hurt,†said Xaneria Restal regretfully. “It’s our fault that Scott’s gone.â€
“Don’t be stupid!†snapped Ivy. “It wasn’t your fault! It was that maniac who kidnapped you. If you run off, his sacrifice will be in vain! He did it so that monster wouldn’t have his way! Can’t you all be the slightest bit grateful for that?!â€
“Listen, girl,†snarled Jadrian Rojj, “our entire race died because of a war with an enemy we failed to defeat! The last thing we needed on our consciences was more death!â€
“So you’ll just run away like you did the last time?!â€
“You bitch!†Jadrian roared and moved to strike her, but was stopped by a green hand grabbing him by the wrist. The warrior’s eyes widened, “Khelfark?!â€
“Ivy’s right,†said Khelfark Tavon sternly, “the reason we’re alive is because we didn’t stand our ground, we fled, abandoned our world. Instead of mourning this loss, we should learn something from it. To never give our ground, or forget what cause we’re fighting for.†He released his friend’s arm and turned to Ivy. “I’m sorry.â€
It was the Princess’ turn to speak.
“I am Angeline, Princess of Wales,†she said, “and I extend the hand of friendship to you.†She held out her hand, and knew that the 7 were trying hard not to stare at the dark pink mark taking up most of her left forearm. She smiled, “I have had my own introduction to our fallen Sir Harris.â€
“Sir…?†Ivy raised an eyebrow.
“A posthumous honour,†Angeline told her quietly.
Khelfark hesitantly took her hand, still not used to the Earth greeting, and offered a smile of his own, “Khelfark Tavon, captain of the Horn of Plenty and ambassador of our people, accepts.â€
“Now please, come inside,†said Angeline, “none of you have rested or eaten since your ordeal. Take it as a royal order.†She led them back down through the skylight. Ivy cast her gaze to the horizon and sighed.
“Godspeed, Anglo Red.â€
At 10 Downing Street, six figures sat around a table in the meeting room.
King Richard IV, Prime Minister Robert Pertwee, A5 director Brigadier G, A-Project director Grant Caster, his gynoid assistant Belle, and Angloman personal trainer Romulus Van Morrison, had gathered together to discuss several issues, not least of which was the death of the late ‘Sir’ Scott Harris.
“What have the family been told?†asked the Prime Minister.
“The truth,†said Caster, “it was my own decision to do so, not Brigadier G’s.â€
“Care to explain yourself, Professor Caster?†asked Brigadier G coolly.
“Sir, pardon me for possibly rash actions,†replied Caster, “but that boy went down fighting, like a real knight, and to lie to his family would have been dishonourable. At first they thought it was a joke, which I anticipated. I showed them recordings from the Dagonet Computer’s video archives. His parents, to say the least, were distraught, and his younger brother demanded we allow him to take over as the second Anglo Red.â€
“Out of sympathy, I scanned him for Athzeron particles,†added Belle, “because it was possible that he was one of those affected by the mass release. The results were negative, we had to sedate the poor boy.â€
“How come?†asked Romulus.
“Tried to tear my head off in anger,†said Caster. Romulus barely stifled a laugh. That sounded like a boy after his own heart.
“So what’s our next move?†asked Pertwee.
“We need to find a new Angloman,†replied Brigadier G. “Sir London was built for five pilots, and it’s too near completion for us to carry out the major reworking required. So, I’m going to have the Athzeron Detection Monitor reprogrammed to detect all those affected in the city, and begin an observation programme to pinpoint the most suitable candidate.â€
At this point, the proceedings were interrupted rather rudely. The door of the meeting room swung open, and someone from behind it called out, “Let me join the Anglomen!â€
XXX
“Are you having a laugh?!â€
Rowan brought his fist down on the table. He, Ivy, Alan, Beth, Khelfark, Xaneria and Jadrian had been summoned to the meeting room so they could hear about the decisions being made. Beth, considerably out of character, stood at the back, not speaking. She looked tired and drawn, with dark rings under her eyes and her hair was frizzy and uncombed. She was even dressed lazily, with a shirt that was too baggy and no shoes at all, just mismatched socks (she had literally been dragged from her bedroom for the meeting). It was quite apparent that Rowan had not become depressed or sad by the loss of his friend, but had slipped into a blazing rage instead. He had just received the news from the higher-ups that Princess Angeline wanted to join the Anglomen.
“I assure you, Mr. Bates, we’re not,†said Brigadier G calmly. “The princess proves positive on the test. She is indeed one of those affected by the Athzeron outbreak.â€
“This is ridiculous!†Rowan pointed at Angeline. “I remember this girl got kidnapped by the Darkshot! How’s she going to be of any use to us, eh?!â€
“More than you, Farm-boy!†Angeline shot back. “You weren’t even the one who saved me when I was a prisoner! It was your friend!â€
“You’re lucky you’re a girl or I’d knock ya teeth down ya throat for giving me lip!â€
“Not man enough to fight a woman then?!â€
“Come here!â€
Alan and Jadrian quickly grabbed him by the arms to stop him hurtling across the desk.
“Your Majesty,†said Ivy, “how can you be okay with this? Your daughter wants to put her life on the line.â€
“I’d do the same in her position,†King Richard said flatly, “and I have no right to challenge her, though she will have to be trained accordingly.â€
“So how exactly did your powers manifest?†asked Ivy.
“Like this,†replied Angeline. She held out her hands. Her palms glowed white, and sparks began to dance over the surface of her skin. The lights in the room started to flicker on and off, and the heat rose considerably. Caster and Belle wondered if it was natural lightning, electricity or some form of electromagnetic pulse, but one look at Brigadier G’s emotionless face told them he had it all worked out. Angeline pointed a finger at Ivy, and the girl’s hair stood up on end. She shrieked in surprise. The princess’ little light-show ended, and she crossed her arms over her chest, quite satisfied with herself.
“I, uh…†Ivy managed to pat her hair back down, “…on behalf of the team, I say welcome aboard.â€
“I knew you’d see things my way,†Angeline smiled. The two girls shook hands, and Ivy’s hair stood up again. There was a murmur of amusement amongst those gathered, but it was Beth, her voice reduced to a croak, who broke it.
“You’ll never replace him…you’ll never replace Scott.â€
With that, she swiftly left the room at super-speed, slapping the princess and slamming the door behind her on the way. Angeline raised a hand to her marked cheek as she fought back tears. She muttered, “…I don’t want to…â€
“Princess, please, sit down,†said Prime Minister Pertwee, and she did so.
“The next order of business is what to do with our alien friends,†he eyed Khelfark, Xaneria and Jadrian. “You three were in command of your ship, were your not?â€
“That’s right, sir,†Khelfark nodded.
“Then I’d like to offer the three of you proper ambassadorial duties. Plans have been laid out to send an exploration ship to Jupiter’s moon of Titan, you three will be part of the team. Your friends will be offered opportunities that best suit them as well. Do you accept?â€
The three aliens looked at each other for a moment, holding silent conference. Then Khelfark looked at Pertwee and said, “We’d be honoured.â€
Deep within a hidden base on the moon, there was a room. The floor was actually a blue pool, with a metal bridge leading across to the door. In the centre, there stood a silver cylinder with all manner of pipes and wires hooked up to it. Green-clad warriors, the Apostles, stood bynd ready for their comrade-in-arms, holding his clothes and sword. The front door of the cylinder released a hiss and swung open. Metal feet touched the bridge, and their master released an echoic groan, taking in his first true breath in a long time. Slowly lurching forward, he took the clothes, dressed, strapped on the scabbard with the sword inside. His eyes glistened with awakening energy. His featureless face, while not smiling, released a satisfied sigh.
“It’s alive,†someone in the crowd spoke.
“Yes, and this time…no force in the universe can stop me.â€
Episode 20: Return of the Darkshot
~~~

In the time following the loss of Anglo Red, Princess Angeline had voluntarily gone with Romulus Van Morrison to train on the secret island. Romulus himself had been reluctant, but Angeline convinced him she would drop the ‘princess’ act, so he would not have to hold back. That didn’t make him feel any better, but he didn’t have much of a choice. The team needed a fifth member for that ‘Sir London’ thing, not that he had any idea what that was supposed to be, but nonetheless he did his job.

XXX

So what were they to do with her then?

That was the question in their minds and on their lips as Rowan Bates and Ivy Rosewater sat together at the counter in The Talisman. Queen were playing on the jukebox. Some football fans were watching West Ham United vs. Tottenham Hotspurs on the wide-screen telly. The pub landlord, Steve McQueen (no relation to the actor of course), did not let his hand stray far from the heavy cudgel hidden under the countertop, because he expected a football row to kick off the moment the match ended. As Alan placed his friends’ drinks in front of them, Nuema Nora emerged from the back room and took a tray of glasses over to a nearby table.

“I didn’t know Nuema was working here,†said Ivy, “and to be honest, I’m surprised your boss let her.â€

“He’s not a bad sort,†said Alan, “just hard is all. They offered Nuema a place within Section A5 but she…well, funnily enough, she insisted on working here instead. Old Steve said so long as she could work, he didn’t give a whit about her being alien.â€

“So, back to the matter at hand,†said Rowan, “what are we going to do about Beth? Her mum said she got home from uni and just locked herself up in her room.â€

“Doesn’t Beth live in student housing though?†asked Ivy.

“She did, but she’s filled out the paperwork to give it back, she’s living at home now. I don’t know about you, but that alone has got me worried. She’s not answering her mobile or any emails.â€

“I didn’t think she’d take…you know…this whole affair so hard,†said Ivy.

“I should have seen it coming,†Rowan told her, “because the three of us, me, her and Scott, have known each other since we were little, and it’s not so hard to see they were in love.â€

“But they weren’t a couple.â€

“This isn’t a movie, Ivy-girl. They were friends for too long, they didn’t want to get together because if things went pear-shaped, things could never be the same for them. That whole ‘let’s just be friends’ thing doesn’t really work.â€

“So what are we to do?â€

“I’ve only ever seen Beth depressed once…it was when her nan died, and it wasn’t pretty. She almost committed suicide, and unless we do something, like, an intervention, she might actually do it this time.â€

“I could talk to her,†said Ivy, “you know, just something between girls.â€

“It’s worth a try…†Rowan stared down at his reflection in the surface of his drink, “I don’t much feel like losing anymore friends.â€

XXX

They found Beth standing against the setting sun’s light, on the roof of a local leisure centre. A small crowd had gathered by the time Alan, Rowan and Ivy arrived. They could see she was crying. Her face was stained with tears, the wind blew her hair around her face, and her angelic beauty in this morbid situation caused Rowan to feel a knot in his stomach.

“Beth!†he called up to her. “Please get down! What are you doing?!â€

Beth didn’t answer. She took another step towards the edge of the roof.

“For God’s sake…†Rowan looked at his tall friend, “Alan, change into costume and get this crowd away from here, make sure the police don’t interfere. This situation’s too delicate and all this attention will only make it worse.â€

“Right,†Alan disappeared round the corner, out of sight. There was the brief sound of an electrical charge, and Anglo Black replaced him. Activating the helmet’s built-in amplifiers, he called out to the crowd, “Everyone get back! We’re handling the situation! Everyone get back now! Return to your homes! There’s nothing for you to see here!â€

The crowd slowly began to move away. Rowan looked at Ivy with an expression that said ‘I hope this works’. Looking back up at Beth, he cried, “Beth! Please! What happened was awful, trust me I know, but this isn’t the answer!â€

“What do you know?†Beth whispered. Those words stung him hard. He gulped back the bile rising in his throat and shouted, “He was my friend too! I lost him and I don’t want to lose you as well, Beth! Why are you doing this to me?! IT’S NOT FAIR!â€

Ivy saw the tears leaking from his eyes, and slowly placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Oh, Rowan…â€

“IF YOU KILL YOURSELF, BETH!†Rowan was screaming now. “I’LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU! AND NEITHER WILL SCOTT! THIS ISN’T THE WAY! DO YOU HEAR ME?!â€

He clenched his fists, and willed by him, the nearest window shattered. A solid column of water, no doubt from the swimming pools, floated out and shaped itself into a staircase leading from the roof to the ground.

“Please, Beth,†Rowan’s voice was little more than a croak now, “please, don’t do it. Just…just come down. I don’t want to lose you, I love you.â€

Beth stayed where she was at first, but after several long, silent moments, she took her first step onto the staircase. Even though it was composed of water, and each footstep sent out ripples in all directions, it held her weight. When she reached the bottom, the descent felt like it lasted forever, Rowan willed the water back into the pool and embraced his friend, who collapsed against him, physically and emotionally exhausted. Rowan could not say she felt like a sister, because quite frankly he would not know what that felt like, having never had any siblings. Shifting her into a bridal position, Rowan started to walk away in the direction of the Thompson residence. Ivy stayed where she was, hugging herself as Black returned to the scene.

“Do you think they’ll be okay?†she asked.

“Who knows?†he replied. “This is a battle they’ll have to fight alone.â€

A family of ducks glided across the surface of Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake, happily going about the daily ducky business of eating bread, quacking angrily at children and swimming with their bottoms in the air…but this is not a story about ducks, this is a story about aliens, so I’ll end this nice charade by saying that the ducks were scared off by something disturbing the water. Coming down from the sky was a black, rectangular vessel, clearly recognisable as a Darkshot troop transport. The ship’s mechanical legs extended as it came in to land, and a ramp stretched out from its underbelly. The first to descend to Earth was the black-and-red-clad commander known only as ‘the Sarge.’ He took his place at the end of the ramp and began barking orders as his soldiers marched down.

“Come on you ‘orrible shower! Hup-two-three-four! Hup-two-three-four! Shape up, Mr. Lah-de-Dah or my boot shall be visiting your arse, lad!â€

The green-clothed Apostle soldiers lined up nearby, and the Sarge walked up and down, inspecting them.

“All right, lovely-boys, this is to be the location of our permanent h’Earth base, which means you h’are to be stationed around the perimeter so’s the Techies can get everything set up. Mr. Lookout will lead the surveillance team in these ‘ere trees…†he pointed at said trees with a sharp conductor’s stick. “…Corporals Barker, Corbett and Cleese will lead three separate groups on regular patrol. If you ‘ave to shoot, you shoot to stun. Any deaths will get us h’unwanted attention. Now…’op to it!â€

“Yes, Sarge!†the Apostles took off in different directions. The Sarge twirled his conductor stick and tucked it under his arm. “They is good boys, just idiots.â€

From inside the transport, there came a second voice, a cold, emotionless one with a strange, mechanical echo, as if talking through a metal tube, “Your own record as of recently has been very questionable, Staff Sergeant. If you want better performance from your grunts, you need to get your own act together.â€

The Sarge felt a chill run down his spine as he turned to face the man who spoke. He was wearing a dark green pinstripe suit and shiny black boots. His head and hands were encased in elegant, pearly white armour decorated with gold designs. Two ominous eyes leered out through the gap of his visor, and a nearly invisible glow seemed to emanate between the gaps in the metal plating. A sword in a scabbard hung on his left hip.

“Sir, I h’assure you,†said the Sarge, “we will not be ‘avin’ anymore problems.â€

“You’d better not,†said the metal-man, “the Devil Doctor’s getting impatient. It won’t be long until Heksas learns about the shield put up to keep him from knowing of our activities. Have you debriefed your men on the next stage of the plan?â€

“Of course I ‘ave, sir,†replied the Sarge. “We’ll ‘ave everything we need very soon.â€

“You’d better be right about it, Staff Sergeant, or I swear I’ll sever your head from your shoulders. Is that clear?â€

“As crystal, sir.â€

The metal-man nodded and walked back up into the ship, where he found two more figures waiting for him – the first was a pale-skinned human girl with auburn hair in a bob-cut and cat-like eyes; she was dressed in a black pinstripe over a low-cut top that showed off a generous portion of her cleavage. The other was an albino man with a pointy nose and hair in a pompadour style; he was dressed in a more standardised grey suit with a burgundy tie.

“We just got word from the Sun Shadow,†said the girl, Deltra. “Blackthorn wants us to speed up the preparations. The satellite has to be shut off for maintenance, which means the Dark Lord will be able to spy on us again, and if we don’t produce results, he’ll put another gang on this job.â€

“That’s the least he’ll do,†replied the metal-man, Ketamax. He pointed to the albino man, “Ironthorn, tell the Techies the area is clear for them to start working.â€

“Right, boss,†said Ironthorn in a deep, raspy voice.

“When’s our relief getting here?†asked Ketamax.

“End of the month,†replied Deltra, “They’ll will expect us to have more than enough of this stuff by then.â€

“Providing those Anglomen don’t get in our way,†Ketamax’s voice became low and dangerous, “I cannot wait to make their leader ste my cold steel. His last escape was beginner’s luck, this time he will not be so fortunate.â€

With one swift movement, he unsheathed his sword, twirled around and cleanly cut off the lapels of Ironthorn’s jacket and cleaved his tie in two. Returning the blade to its holding, he dryly said, “Get fixed up,†and strode through a nearby door.

On the edge of Hyde Park, a dark Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph sat quietly. In the back, Brigadier G was watching the activities around the Darkshot ship on his laptop screen.
What are they up to? he thought to himself, as if I don’t already have suspicions…
He waited for a few more minutes, then he gave an order to his chauffer, and the Seraph rolled away. It was official.

The Darkshot had returned.

Episode 21: Just Beyond the Serpentine, Part 1

~~~
A barrier had been erected around the new Darkshot Earth-base. To any passer-bys, there was nothing. Inside, Ketamax, Deltra and Ironthorn watched as their plan was put into motion. The new base, like the previous one, resembled a series of white domes, and beside them was a massive construction with four curved, metal legs, and hanging between them was a large drill (the barrier would silence it to avoid attracting unwanted attention). A grey-suited Technician Apostle sat in the control box on top.
“Laser-drill’s all charged up, sir!†the Technician called out.
“Then begin the operation!†Ironthorn called back. “We can watch from inside.â€
The three of them went inside one of the domes, where once again the noise of the drill was silenced. Through a window, they could see it twirl slowly, then faster, as the grooves in the metal seemed to melt together, until there was just a solid, blued steel cone. Rather than descend from its perch, the drill seemed to grow down into the soil, becoming thinner up top.
“So…remind me, Ketsy,†said Deltra, “what exactly are we mining for?â€
“While I was being revived aboard the Sun Shadow,†replied the alien knight, “Blackthorn plucked a few bits of Anglo Red’s D.N.A. from my sword. He said the blood on the blade contained a chemical called Athzeron, something he was familiar with, don’t know about it myself. He said that this meant there would have to be a vein of the stuff travelling right through the country, and it’s at its thickest within the city.â€
“So what are we supposed to do with this stuff once we’ve got it?â€
“Hell if I know, but it’s apparently going to put us on an equal playing field.â€
“I thought that’s what the Exxy was for?â€
“I asked him that, he told me it was safer to have ‘both belt and braces’.â€
“Oh…†Deltra said in a somewhat dazed manner. She could have sworn she saw a dark figure standing amidst the trees. Her mind flashed back to that terrible, nightmarish thing she saw several weeks ago on the ship, a masked apparition that reached towards her, perhaps to strangle her. She felt goose-bumps rise on her skin and shrugged them off. Just a hallucination, she had snorted a bit too much and was seeing things, that as all. Nothing to worry about…that was the safest bet in her mind anyway.
XXX
“So is she any better, Ro’?†asked Ivy. She sat at a table outside The Talisman, where she could be in the sunlight. Her mobile phone was pressed to her ear, and on the other end was Rowan Bates.
“She’s…she’s on the mend,†he replied. “She’s at my flat right now. I convinced her to play some Nintendo, and that’s keeping her busy. Still not very sociable right now. though.â€
“Well, do your best,†said Ivy, “I’ll bring Alan and Nuema over later.â€
“Have you heard anything about the rest of the 7?â€
“From what I know, Khelfark, Xaneria and Jadrian are going to be on the shuttle to Titan next month. They want us to see them off. Gluta and Iasus have joined the Air Cadets and Stimma’s now in Sub-Camelot.â€
“Cool, they’ve done all right then…anyway, Ivy, I’ve gotta go, I promised Beth I’d play some co-op with her. Bye.â€
“Yeah, cheerio…†Ivy pressed the ‘end call’ button just as Alan came out with two drinks.
“Rowan?†he asked.
“Yeah, Beth’s doing all right,†nodded Ivy, “or at least she’s stopped trying to throw herself off of buildings anyway…Alan, do you think there’s any chance of bringing Scott back?â€
“Belle told us they’re doing everything they can,†said Alan. “We can only hope.â€
Ivy noticed for the first time that he wearing a silver chain around his neck, whatever was on the end was tucked under his shirt, but it did not take a genius to realise he was wearing a crucifix.
“I didn’t know you were Christian.â€
“Protestant, to be really specific. Everyone needs faith in something, right?â€
“I suppose so.â€
Alan placed his hand on hers and held it firmly. There was a strange kind of warmth there that usually wasn’t. He was normally so stoic, so calm, like an obelisk, and yet, it was there. Alan whispered in her ear, “Have heart, Ivy, everything will be okay.â€
“I hope you’re right…I really do.â€
Alan was about to speak again, but the recognisable six-tone alarm of their communicators came first. Alan pulled the black, phone-like device out of his pocket and put it to his ear.
“This is Black,†he spoke quietly, “I’m with Pink, what is it?â€
“We’ve got a mission for you,†said the voice of Belle, “we’ve alerted Blue and Yellow too. Come to Anglobase immediately.â€
XXX
The four remaining Anglomen were gathered in the circular chamber deep within the Sub-Camelot underground complex. Grant Caster and Belle stood in front of a large screen with a shot of a rectangular craft touching down by a lake.
“I’m sorry to say that the Darkshot are back,†said Caster grimly, “and the worst part is, Ketamax is with them.â€
“We killed Ketamax,†said Alan. “I smashed his head off with my war hammer.â€
“I know you did,†Caster nodded, “but through whatever sciences Blackthorn has in his possession, he’s been resurrected, and probably angered over his defeat. He’ll be looking for you when he gets the chance.â€
“So why hasn’t he?†asked Rowan.
“Brigadier G has reason to believe that Blackthorn knows about Athzeron,†Caster explained, “and has discovered a vein of it leading to the mine beneath this very building. We all have our own theories about what his plans are, but for now, your priority is to halt their operation. They may use an invisibility barrier, so the approximate coordinates of where they’ve landed will be downloaded directly to the Phantom’s databanks. Do the four of you think you can handle this by yourself?â€
Rowan, Alan and Ivy nodded.
“Bethany?â€
Beth hesitated, and nodded as well. Caster furrowed his eyebrows in concern, but saluted the team nonetheless. “Good luck.â€
XXX
The Phantom, the modified black Rolls-Royce that served as the team’s primary transport, rolled towards Hyde Park with Alan at the wheel, Ivy beside him, and Rowan and Beth in the back. They pulled up at the gates, and Alan looked at the dashboard computer one last time to make sure he had the coordinates right. He turned it off and climbed out, followed by the others. He could not help but notice Beth lagging along behind the rest of them, but put it down to her depressed state. At least, as Rowan and Ivy had said, she was getting better. He had a terrible premonition that during the inevitable battle, she would be practically useless to them, and it was impossible to shake off the image of Ketamax running his sword through her belly.
Get a grip, he told himself, just concentrate on stopping the Darkshot. Rowan will be keeping an eye on her.
He heard marching and ducked behind a tree. The others followed suit. A trio of green-suited Apostles passed them, these ones holding simple grey cudgels. Alan looked at his team-mates, gave them the signal, and he, Rowan and Ivy leapt out of hiding, flooring the three aliens. Alan wrestled the first one’s weapon out of its hands and brought the heavy end down on its head, knocking it out. Ivy made to punch the second one but it moved behind her, and grabbed a bundle of her brown locks in one hand and (inadvertently) cupped her breast with the other. Growling, Ivy bit her would-be-captor’s thumb. It yelped and let go, and she saw him off with a high kick to the throat. Rowan shoved the third one up against a tree, dealt it several rapid punches to the gut and then brought his knee up into its face.
“Bunch of wimps,†Rowan sneered.
“I swear if one of those things touches me again,†Ivy shuddered, “I’ll tear its bits off and stamp on them.â€
“Oo, Ivy, I love it when you talk dirty.â€
“Oh, shut it, Farm-boy.â€
“Okay, enough playing around,†said Alan with his usual stern demeanour. “Let’s get them out of sight and move away before another patrol sees us.â€
Beth watched from her spot behind the tree, stewing in her own self-doubt, unaware of three more Apostles creeping up behind her. She released a pained cry as one smacked her in the stomach with its cudgel and then slung her over its shoulder. The other Anglomen turned around, alerted, as the assailants came out into the open.
“Don’t try anything cute,†said their leader, “or I’ll break her spine. Raise your hands.â€
They did so, and the two others relieved them of their A-Braces.
“Bastards,†Rowan swore.
“Shut it, Earthling!†the lead Apostle snapped. “All three of you! Keep your hands raised, turn around and walk ahead of us! Now!â€
Once again, they did so. What could they do? They were helpless while Beth was in their grasp, now they were prisoners of the Darkshot, and they all knew that escape would not be easy. They passed through the barrier, which felt a lot like walking through a wall of freezing cold water, and the domes and the drill and the Apostles seemed to melt into existence around them…and standing there in a doorway, metal hands on top of his sword, was Ketamax, back from beyond the grave.
“Take those three to the interrogation room,†he said with venomous glee.
“And the one in yellow’s for me,†added Deltra, appearing beside him.
As one man, Alan, Rowan and Ivy gulped.
XXX
The interrogation room was not in the domes. No, readers, it was in the troop transport, the ship itself, which was fine for Ketamax. He did not want to be interrupted by those stupid, lumbering beasts. He had stationed his lieutenant, Ironthorn, outside to make sure of it, just in case. His brush with death had taught the Swordmaster to always be well-prepared. The room was dim, a single orb of light glistened off of his armoured body. Alan Grayson, truly the strongest of his enemies here, was leaning against the wall, bleeding from his nose and mouth, and refusing to give way.
“I’ll ask one more time, boy,†said Ketamax. “Where is your leader? Where is that crimson coward hiding?!â€
“He’s not…a coward…!â€
“The four of you are here, captured, and he’s nowhere to be seen!†he grabbed Alan by the scruff of his shirt and pulled him close. “Where?!â€
“You’re too late, man,†Alan said, a rude smirk across his face, “you both came back from that last fight, but he died a hero’s death before you could get to him.â€
Ketamax’s eyes narrowed, and the temperature in the room dropped several degrees.
“You lie…â€
“I speak the truth, sir. No lie ever passes Honest Alan’s lips.â€
“You…LIE!â€
Ketamax threw him back against the wall. Alan gritted his teeth as his head met with the hard metal behind him. A new wave of agony washed over him as his torturer’s blade pierced his skin, entering through his stomach and passing out through his back and digging into the wall, pinning him there. Alan looked down at it, blood pouring from his mouth and stomach and washing over the blade.
“Though…if he is dead,†Ketamax said quietly, “I’ll just kill you in his place. Such a pity, Black Knight, I would have given him a choice…and if he’d made the right one…he would be a fine Swordmaster.â€
“I know he’d never join you…you alien son-of-a-bitch…â€
“No harm in musing. Now, you can stay there for a while, while I contemplate this situation…â€
He left Alan there, and relieved Ironthorn of his post. When his master wasn’t looking, Ironthorn looked down at his other-self (a pleasure he had not partaken in for some time), but upon deducing the big boy was still inside the room, new thoughts crossed his mind…
His zip was down before he even entered the room.
A small boat floated homeward to Britain, and the young woman standing on the deck could feel the pain her unwilling team-mates were suffering. She was not sure how, but some force, an invisible line of energy, connected them all, like one from many. An American writer by the name of Stephen King once used the term ‘ka-tet.’ It really applied here, because she could not think of a word that really encompassed it. Bond was not enough, and unity was too vague. Still, through whatever force held them, Princess Angeline knew that the Anglomen needed her…and she would not fail them.
~~~

Ironthorn’s scream echoed throughout the ship. He lay on his side, his hands clasped over his face, his trousers down around his ankles. Alan stood over him, holding his blood-covered silver crucifix in one hand and Ketamax’s sword in the other. Half-blinded, the alien enforcer writhed in agony like a worm trapped in the early bird’s beak. Alan breathed heavily, feeling it as down below, every sinew of flesh, bone and muscle in his lower abdomen pulled itself together and revitalised its energy, drawing on the Athzeron in his bloodstream. He could have said something snappy, like, ‘keep it in your trousers next time,’ or, ‘be thankful, Christ heals the blind,’ but right now, he was too stressed, and every part of him was pulled tight like a bundle of wires. He could feel his veins pulsing. He looked at the sword; the one Ketamax called the Silver Zacalibur, and considered it. He was not a swordsman, his weapon was the war hammer, and holding his enemy’s blade felt wrong. So using his foot, he inched out a section of Ironthorn’s coat and plunged the blade through the fabric, trapping him on the floor. He used his shirt to wipe the blood off the cross and then slipped it beneath his clothes again. He now had to find the others, and then complete the mission.
Two Apostles came in to investigate, but Alan saw them off with a double-clothesline attack before running off up the corridor.

XXX

The girl with the yellow clothes was a prisoner, a toy to play with. She had been sent to Deltra’s quarters on the ship, and was now tied to a chair, where the alien girl was trying to prompt a reaction from her. She had given her something of a hellish make-over, powdering her face up and even dying her hair white, making her unrecognisable. She looked like a ghost.

“For a captive, you don’t say much,†Deltra groaned, “come on, kid, talk, make this worth my while.â€

“I don’t like being called ‘kid’,†Beth said, her voice void of emotion, “how old are you?â€

“So you do talk,†Deltra scowled, “and if you really must know, I’m 22.â€

“You’re not that much older than me,†said Beth, “now, let me go.â€

“Why would I do that?â€

“Because if you don’t, my friends will come.â€

Deltra blew a raspberry at her and went over to a dressing table nearby. She opened the top draw and withdrew a pair of scissors. Beth closed her eyes, and time slowed around her as she thought about her situation. Yes, her best friend, the man she loved, had died saving the Earth, perhaps the entire universe, from a psychotic monster, and for a time, she had hidden behind a wall of depression. She knew that it was her fault that she and the others were prisoners, and she had to make up for that. Swallowing her pride, Beth pushed outward with her arms. The ropes did indeed restrict her movement, but they were not tight enough to prevent it completely. Feeling the aura emanating from Deltra grow closer, she willed the Athzeron in her arms to charge itself, and she could now feel waves of invisible energy coursing down her. Her arms were vibrating with power. She heard Deltra’s surprised gasp as the ropes were burnt off by the friction she had created. Beth’s eyes snapped open and she brought her foot up into the other girl’s stomach, winding her.

“I’ll show myself the door,†she said, leaving Deltra gasping and spluttering.

Maybe I should have brought that sword after all, Alan thought as he barely dodged a swipe from a certain black Apostle. The Sarge had come charging in when one of his men managed to send out a distress signal before the human tore him in half. He swung again, and Alan leapt back, but the Sarge was about to trip him up before he could steady himself, and the tall boy fell flat on his back. The Sarge held the tip of his blade to his fallen opponent’s throat. He raised it, prepared to strike, there was contact between their eyes, and then a ball of yellow energy screeched out of the shadows and struck the Sarge in the side, throwing him, screaming, out of sight. Alan looked in the direction it had come from with wide-eyed astonishment as a ghostly apparition in sunflower yellow clothes appeared before him.

“Beth…you’re okay?â€

“I will be. I know where Deltra took the others.â€

“And the A-Braces?â€

“Looking for these?†a voice boomed. The two turned, and there stood Ketamax, with all four A-Braces wrapped around his left forearm. Standing behind him was Ironthorn, his face was covered in blood and there was a black bandage covering the ruined eye.

“I’ll get you…†Ironthorn snarled, “…I swear, your arse is mine.â€

“That’s what I’m afraid of,†Alan sneered. He cast a glance to Beth, the sort that could be translated through eye contact, the sort that was telling her to go and free the others while he dealt with the Chuckle Brothers over here. There was no use arguing, Beth held her tongue, and took off in the other direction. Alan moved into a boxing stance.

“Show me what you got, Tin-Grin.â€

It did not take Beth long to find the cell where Rowan and Ivy were being kept. After all, they had passed it on the way to Deltra’s room. Inside, Rowan had attempted to use his ability to control water to smash the doors open, but the only water nearby he could use was that in his and Ivy’s body, and even if he somehow managed to create a big enough blast, it would kill them both. So he had settled for banging on the door until the Apostle guard silenced him by punching him in the gut. He was shouting and swearing again, while the Apostle threatened to shoot his face off. Presently, Beth poked her head around the corner, then pulled back. The guard was looking in the opposite direction, for now anyway. Perfect. Smiling deviously, she rolled up her trouser leg to expose her smooth, bare leg, and slid it into the dim light of the corridor.

“Yoo-hoo, soldier-boy,†she cooed, “you know what they say about us Earth girls, right?â€

The guard made a curious noise in the back of his throat and after doing a quick take of his surroundings, approached. When he was close enough, he asked quietly, “Why don’t you tell me.â€

“We’re all bitches,†she said, and brought her foot up between his legs as hard as she could. Before he could even register the pain, she pulled his gun from his failing grip and fired a single shot into his head. Wiping the purple blood off her shirt, she rolled her trouser leg down again, pulled the dead guard’s key from his belt, and walked over to the cell.

“Awright, people?†she asked pleasantly as the heavy metal door swung open.

“Well look who’s finally talking again,†Ivy smirked.

“Ha-ha, excuse me, Princess,†Beth replied dryly, “Alan’s fighting Ketamax and one of his enforcers on his own.â€

Said Rowan Bates, “Then how about we stop nattering and go save him before he gets his head cut off or something.â€

Beth contemplated the weapon in her hand, and decided to keep it, at least until they had their A-Braces back.

Alan hit the wall hard as Ironthorn dealt him a terrific punch to the stomach. Blood sprayed from his mouth and splattered across the alien’s suited chest. Ironthorn dipped his fingers in it, put it to his tongue, and hissed with delight.

“I’m going to enjoy tearing you apart, piece by piece,†he said. He hooked his hand around the collar of Alan’s shirt and held him up as he punched him hard across the face and then kneed him in the stomach. He dropped him to the ground and kicked him in the stomach. “Beg for mercy.â€

“Oi! Bell-end!†someone shouted. A glistening projectile screeched towards them, and Ketamax swiftly cut it in half with his sword. The two halves went off in different directions and exploded, opening a gap in the ceiling of the transport ship. Beth, Rowan and Ivy walked towards them, Rowan had seen the hole and his hands were already glowing blue.

“Give us the A-Braces or I’ll flood this place!†he cried out.

“These?†Ketamax cooed, raising the arm where the four devices were strapped on firmly. “Come and get them!â€

“Gladly,†said Beth, raising her stolen firearm and squeezing off another shot. Once again, Ketamax cut it in half, but this time the pieces exploded much closer, throwing him off his feet. The knight stumbled forward and Rowan made his move. He clapped his hands together in front of him and from outside, there came a torrent of water from the Serpentine Lake. Ketamax was pinned to the ground.

“Beth! Ivy! Get the A-Braces before he can get back up!†he ordered. In his natural form, he could only keep this up for so long. Beth and Ivy did as he bid, but Ironthorn was ready to block their path, until Alan threw himself forward and tackled him. The girls pulled the bracelets off of Ketamax just in time, stepping backwards to avoid the swing of his clawed hand. They threw two of them to the boys, and like magic, the devices seemed to magnetise to their wrists and the straps locked themselves together. Without wasting another second, they activated the hidden powers in their bracelets. The power that allowed them to overcome every threat fate had thrown their way.

“TRANSFORM!â€

It felt good to be back in the suits. So good, in fact, that Blue almost happily summoned his battle-axe, Algovale, and brought it down on Ketamax, who rolled out of the way just in time and swung his sword, the proud Silver Zacalibur. Blue blocked, and the two entered a fierce struggle. The Sarge was hurtling up the corridor, followed by a dozen or so Apostles, screaming in unison. Yellow summoned her shield, Tristan, and expanded it so she could easily shove them backwards. Pink backed her up with a volley of arrows from her crossbow, Bedivere. Black dodged a wide swing from Ironthorn and landed an uppercut, throwing him out of the gap and into the grassland outside. It didn’t take long for the entire battle to spill out into the open.

Ironthorn staggered to his feet and spat out blood. Knees shaking, he glared hatefully at Black with his one good eye.

“All right…all right, all right, all right, all right, all right,†he hissed, “let’s take it to the next level, you miserable human slime.†He cocked his head back and bellowed as his body exploded with eldritch lightning. The smoke settled, and for the second time, the Anglomen witnessed a monstrous alien mutation. As his name would suggest, Ironthorn was covered in dark grey, metallic armour. He had oversized, padded shoulders and what appeared to be miniature missiles attached to his forearms. His head had disappeared completely, but a face with large, sharp teeth, slit nostrils and glistening, red eyes appeared on his chest. Clasped in his hands was a sledgehammer with a longer than average handle.

“Why are there never any pretty aliens? They’re all ugly as sin,†Blue groaned.

“Watch it,†Black warned. He found a certain Nuema Nora to be quite attractive personally, but that was not for here or now. Ironthorn came at him with his sledgehammer, and Black summoned his war-hammer, Caradoc, just in time to block. He kicked Ironthorn away, and grunted with the effort – whether the monster actually was made from iron or not, he could not say, but he was damn heavy all te same. Pink jack-knifed into the air, firing arrows as she flew over, striking the Apostles below her, and with her friends keeping their enemies distracted, Yellow made a mad dash towards the great drill, holding Tristan in front of her like a battering ram. There was a mighty explosion, the shockwaves knocked them all to the ground, and Yellow vanished into the towering, curling snake of flames.

Blue roared, “BETH!!!â€

Ketamax was wiped from Blue’s mind when he saw Yellow’s body flapping in the air like a piece of cloth. Answering his plea, the waters of the lake rose up into a spiralling column, catching her and gently lowering her into Blue’s arms. Yellow, a trifle dazed by the explosion, let out a low moan from inside her helmet. A whistling noise pierced the atmosphere like a needle as large chunks of the laser-drill fell towards them, one considerable piece making a beeline for the two Anglomen. Black swatted it away with a cricket swing of Caradoc.

“Get in the game you two,†he said. “We’re not finished yet.â€

There came a horrible, angry, bloodcurdling scream. Deltra staggered out of the ship, clutching a small, black case in one hand. The make-up on her face was smeared, she had been crying as she writhed on the floor of her quarters. Now she only had vengeance on her mind. Her other hand was wrapped around the trigger of her arm-blaster.

“I’ll kill you, you yellow bitch!†she shrieked. She squeezed the trigger and a ball of orange light fired out, heading towards Yellow and Blue. Blue moved to shield her with his body, but the attack failed to hit them. At the last second, Pink had fired an arrow that cut through the ball and dissipated it. Deltra turned her attention to the small girl and growled, then charged forward. Pink gracefully flipped over her and planted both feet in her back. Deltra landed in the grass in an undignified position, with her rear end in the air.

“Ketamax!†she whined. “Take this!†She managed to throw the black case and it skittered into the grass at his feet. Even though he had no mouth, the alien knight seemed to be smiling as he lifted it up, recognising it. This was it. Now those Anglomen would not stand a chance…but, alas, the stuff was not completely tested, yet he had the perfect guinea pig. He popped open the case and removed a green patch the size of a bottle cap, looked at it in wonderment, then slapped it on the shoulder of the prone Ironthorn.

“Get up, old sport, you’ll be feeling better in moments,†he tittered, taking a few steps back. He made a gesture with his hand, and Deltra and the few remaining Apostles did the same. The four Anglomen regrouped, Yellow holding up Tristan defensively as Ironthorn started to squirm in what appeared to be pain. Veins bulged under his metal skin, and green steam poured out of his nostrils and mouth. Then, like a sped up video of a plant in bloom, he grew, and he grew, and he grew, until he stood up, towering over them like a titan, at least a hundred foot high. His voice had changed to a deep, echoing boom, and all over the country, people knew. This was one thing that could not be covered up, no matter how much the government would try. Anglomen were public knowledge, and now it seemed, so were giant alien monsters.

“How…how are we supposed to fight that…?†Pink croaked.

“Dr. Caster, Belle…anybody,†Yellow said into her communicator, “please send help, I don’t think we can take this thing on alone.â€

“We’re already aware of the situation, Beth,†replied Belle, “and we’re sending reinforcements now. Keep out of the monster’s reach until then.â€

“Good luck, Earthlings,†Deltra teased, “you’ll damn well need it.â€

Her new suit felt good on her skin. It had not simply materialised over her clothes, it had replaced them, and the smooth under-layer beneath the chain-mail was soft and silky smooth against her body. The visor, while pitch black on the outside, was clear as crystal on the inside. The complex systems inside the helmet regulated her temperature and ensured she remained comfortable, and the act of downloading information directly to her brain was utterly painless. The information that appeared on the screen before her did not even obscure her vision. It was wonderful, like the suit itself was a living creature. At that precise moment, she was seated in a lit room, as her transport was lifted into the air by another. There was a slight tug of g-forces on her stomach as they were propelled upwards from somewhere underground. Through the wide shatterproof screen that took up most of the front wall of the room, she could see the chamber of the huge shuttle, built like a flying fortress, with a multitude of technicians making final preparations. She should have felt nervous, considering what was about to happen, but really, it all felt natural, it felt right to be here, to be in this seat of power. A speaker mounted on the console buzzed and the gynoid called Belle’s voice came through from another point, this one in the shuttle’s command bridge.

“We’ll soon be entering the danger zone, estimated arrival time five minutes. How are you holding up in there?â€

“Perfect,†she smiled.

“As soon as you see the other Anglomen, turn the dial on your console to trans-mat them into the cockpit.â€

“Romeo that, Ms. Belle.â€

Her gloved hands gently held the control grips, which were mounted on gimbals. An unmoving gyroscope was embedded in the upper left corner of the console. The trans-mat dial was right below it. She was the pilot. Not the captain, but the pilot at least. As was something of a tradition in her family, she had served at least a spell under military training. Never deployed, but she had the knowledge at least. When the time came, there was a great sound of gears, alarm bells rang, and the sky seemed to materialise before her, first as a thin line, then expanding.

The titanic Ironthorn stamped the ground, leaving a footprint the size of a swimming pool. The Anglomen were able to escape in time, but the shockwaves threw them off their feet. Black struck the monster’s foot with Caradoc only to ineffectively bounce off. Unable to think of a way out of this terrible situation, each of the Anglomen slowly began to feel despair, when with a rush of engines, something swooped onto the scene. The thing was some variety of shuttle-craft, though it resembled some bizarre combination of a tank and a plane, with four wings on the sides and three sets of treads underneath. It was a dark blue colour with dashes of white and red here and there. Across one side in gold text was the thing’s name – Merlin Machine.

The Merlin Machine swerved at an angle that forced Ironthorn to duck and cover his head, and flew upwards again. A section of the front opened, just below the cockpit area, and a ramp resembling a set of train tracks extended. There was the sound of a train’s pipe, an electronic surge, and to the Anglomen’s amazement, a gold-and-red steam locomotive with two carriages attached rolled out and spiralled around the area, propelled by some hidden advanced hovering system. Four thin, white beams shot down from under the locomotive, and the world around the Anglomen momentarily became a mass of liquid and light. As everything came back into focus, they found themselves standing in a circular, double-tiered room. There were five stations that combined seats with control consoles of various designs. Four of them were positioned around one in the centre.

A figure rose from the foremost seat, and the Anglomen froze. Yes, this was another of their brood, one whose outfit was a brilliant pearl white decorated with gold, and a diamond-shaped visor that obscured her face.

“Welcome aboard the London Express,†Anglo White chirped in a voice they all recognised.

“Princess Angeline?!â€

“We’ll get to that later, right now we need to deal with that Darkshot enforcer and destroy the entire Earth-base. Black, take the gunning position on the left. Yellow, take the defence position on the right.â€

“Get stuffed!†Yellow shot back. “If all I work with is shields, people will think I can’t fight!â€

“All right, fine,†White sighed, “Blue, you take the defence position. Pink, navigation’s in the back. As for you, Yellow, if you want to be a smart-arse, the tactician’s seat is right behind mine.â€

“Suits me fine,†Yellow smiled confidently under her helmet. The five of them took their designated seats and with a loud but funnily welcome buzz, all the systems activated. The room was lit all the way around, and they could see the technological beauty it really was.

“Get ready,†said Anglo White, “Yellow, turn the key above your head and say ‘power cross’.â€

“Why?â€

“Just do it.â€

Yellow looked up, and indeed, there was an oversized metal key jammed into a lock above her. She took hold of it and tried to turn it with one hand, but it didn’t budge. Frowning, she pulled, and the key moved outward but did not leave the lock. Now loose in her hand, she was able to turn it anticlockwise and push it back in. A screen with the words ‘Awaiting Command’ on it flashed on.

“Power cross!â€

A computerised voice boomed out of hidden speakers, “Sir London transformation initiated!â€

XXX

Outside, Ironthorn regained his footing (it was not easy moving in a body suddenly hundreds of times much bigger) and took a swing at the London Express, but at the last second, a protective field of energy appeared around the train, and the monster’s fist bounced off. The two carriages broke away from the locomotive and floated off in different directions, defended by their own off-cuts of the shield. Bits and pieces started to move around of their own accord, changing the three components into something completely different. As the back of the locomotive swung down so it sat below the front, the first carriage changed into what appeared to be a torso-less waist, legs and pointy-toed feet, then promptly attached itself to what could only be the incomplete torso. The second carriage split in half completely and formed a disembodied pair of arms that sealed to the sides. A pair of silver hands slid out, and from the top of the entire affair, a red bullet-shaped piece screwed up. The bullet reshaped itself into a head resembled a knight’s helmet with a dark green visor, a silver mouthpiece, and an elegant serrated head-fin for plumage.

“Sir London, ready for battle,†the computerised voice said. The shield dissipated, it was now anybody’s game.

XXX

“Not that I don’t think this is all utterly fantastic,†said Blue, “but how are we supposed to control this thing?!â€

“You concentrate on what’s in front of you,†White told him, “and Sir London will handle the rest himself. Try the Kay-Cannons for starters.â€

XXX

Ironthorn charged towards Sir London and swung his sledgehammer. The robot brought up its left arm and caught the hammer’s head in its hand. There was a groaning sound, and the head was shattered. Ironthorn stared at the remains of his weapon and growled, then lunged at Sir London. The robot calmly took a step back to avoid and raised its arms. Two pipe-like accessories were attached to each one, just above the wrist. The tips glowed, and then bolts of green lightning shot out, peppering the monster with blasts. Sir London advanced and brought its mighty fist down on its enemy’s head, pounding him face-first into the ground. Its visor shone with power and it released a low, metal growl.

XXX

Anglo White looked up at Yellow and said, “Signal the Merlin Machine, have them send Adurotas and we can finish this fight.â€

Yellow stared at her console, then pressed a blue button marked ‘M.M.’

“Adurotas,†she said simply.

“Romeo that,†replied the voice of Belle, “we’re trans-matting Adurotas now.â€

XXX

Sir London automatically shifted into a ready position as a ball of white light flew down from the Merlin Machine high above. The ball exploded and reintegrated in the form of an oversized musket, resting neatly in the robot’s hands. Inside the cockpit, Blue’s screen was replaced by a targeting system with a large crosshairs that soon narrowed in on the fallen monster.

“Fire!â€

The musket, Adurotas, roared, a spike of hot metal and lead burst out of the end of the barrel and cut a vast hole straight through Ironthorn’s body. The monster released a final desperate cry as Sir London turned away. The Anglomen heard the flame-less explosion behind them.

XXX

Ketamax and Deltra had taken their remaining soldiers and the damaged ship straight back to the Sun Shadow during the fight. They had used the armour of dead Apostles to clog the hole (there were plenty of them to spare thanks to those slimy humans), and for the time they had served as a satisfactory cover. They knelt before their master, the man called Blackthorn, in his throne room, their clothes tattered and covered in grass stains and ash from the carnage. Manitov, Blackthorn’s trusty right-hand man, skulked behind the throne like an off-world Grima Wormtongue.

“The laser-drill was completely destroyed,†said Blackthorn.

“Yes, sir,†Ketamax and Deltra murmured.

“We gained no Athzeron, and now British intelligence are going to be keeping a careful eye on the vein, and we have nothing to show Heksas should he decide to drop in.â€

“We collected a small store of it at the last minute,†Ketamax piped up, “it should be enough to suit your needs, sir.â€

“It had better…†Blackthorn hissed, “…because if Heksas decides to replace us on this job, I’m going to cut off your head a second time, and make sure it’s permanent. As for you Deltra, I’ll leave you as jailbait on the worst prison-planet I can find.â€

Deltra whimpered in fear.

“Both of you get out of my sight, I’m tired of looking at your miserable faces!†Blackthorn boomed. He spat a gob of acid at the two enforcers, who scrambled away just in time to avoid being hit. The small pool splattered on the floor, burning away a portion of the ebony carpet.

“Good criminals are hard to find,†he sighed ruefully. He remembered a time when you could work with capable people, and the worst obstacle you might find was another gang (who you could negotiate with) or in rare cases, a do-gooder policeman, but that was a long time ago, when Elias Blackthorn was still human.

XXX

Hyde Park had been temporarily cordoned off while the authorities disposed of the alien remains and ensured the local environment had not been affected by anything dangerous. From atop a nearby rooftop, the five Anglomen watched as the Merlin Machine vanished over the horizon, carrying with it the components of perhaps the ultimate persuader in the fight against the Darkshot. They removed their helmets and turned to each other, sure nobody could see their faces.

“I’m…sorry I was so hard on you earlier,†said Rowan, offering his hand. Beth followed suit, “I shouldn’t have slapped you. There’s no excuse for it.â€

“Don’t worry about it,†Angeline smiled, accepting their hands with her own, “I can’t really say I know what you were going through, but I think I understand at least. I won’t try to replace your friend. I’ll fight with you in his honour.â€

Ivy looked up at the sky. She remembered that time during their first training period with Big Hard Romulus. She had fallen in the mud, Romulus had insulted her as part of his own method of motivating his students, and it had been that bashful blonde boy with the cold grey eyes who had told her to stand up and keep going. She doubted she’d ever talk about that in the future, but it was those words that made her stand on her own feet and become what she was. A warrior. A knight…well, a knight-in-training anyway, she was the only one among them who really wished for the day when it would be official. ‘Dame Ivy Rosewater’ sounded fantastic.

“You know something…†Beth sighed, “¦I think he’d be proud of us. So, Princess, welcome to the team.â€

“Yar,†Rowan agreed. His country accent made him sound almost comical as he said it. “You’ll make a fine addition.â€

“You handled that robot well,†said Alan, “I look forward to flying it again.â€

“As do I,†said Ivy, “finally, a team-mate with some class.†She and Angeline giggled together at that, ignoring the raised eyebrows and glares from the others.

“I think thish ish the shtart of a be-yootiful friendship,†Rowan said in his best Humphrey Bogart voice, “be-yootiful indeed.â€
