Retrotainment Brings Another Haunted Halloween

It was ten years ago that Retrotainment Games burst onto the homebrew scene with Haunted Halloween 85, their first original game for the NES. They’ve grown since then, developing other games like Full Quiet, but for their double-digit anniversary, they’ve returned to their original creation once more for one last ghoulish romp: presenting Haunted Halloween 87. After Haunted Halloween 85 in 2015 and Haunted Halloween 86 in 2017, Haunted Halloween 87 plans to wrap up the trilogy once and for all. The main characters are once again Donny and Tami, two typical teenagers who, two years ago, found out their Midwestern American town was cursed (but what would you expect from a place called “Possum Hollow”). They’ve spent the last two years fighting off the minions of a monster named Harry who appears every Halloween night, but this time Harry isn’t taking chances — he’s partnered up with a witch. This means Donny and Tami will have to be stronger than ever before, and lucky for us, they’ve been training. This time they can wall jump, upgrade their power moves, block, and enhance throwable objects to eliminate multiple monsters at once. They can even grab the witch’s broom and ride […]

This brings back so many memories of my NES days! Haunted Halloween 85 was one of my favorite homebrew titles back when it launched, and it’s amazing to see Retrotainment revisiting this series one last time. Donny and Tami sound like they’ve leveled up in a big way, and I’m excited about the wall-jumping mechanic—something I wish more NES games had explored. The broom-riding sections with throwable crabapples? Chef’s kiss. I’m definitely grabbing a physical cart. Retro forever!

Retrotainment never misses! As someone who dabbles in homebrew development, I admire how much care they put into their games. Haunted Halloween 87 seems like a proper swan song for this trilogy, and the addition of autoscrolling broom sections makes me want to start coding again. Plus, that $200 pledge for the complete trilogy? Totally worth it for collectors. Can’t wait to see what Retrotainment does next.

I’ve never played any Haunted Halloween games, but this sounds pretty neat! I like the idea of fighting monsters in a cursed town called Possum Hollow. It feels like it could be a spooky mix of retro gaming and Halloween vibes. I might back the Kickstarter just to see what all the hype is about.

I love supporting indie devs, but $50 for a physical cart feels steep, especially with $10 extra for the manual and packaging. I get that retro carts are niche, but I’m sticking with the $10 ROM for now. That said, the gameplay improvements sound promising, and I hope this one lives up to the trilogy’s reputation.

It’s about time we got a trilogy closer! Haunted Halloween 85 and 86 are staples in my retro collection, and I’m thrilled they’re wrapping it up with 87. I’m going all-in for the $200 package to get the reprints. Possum Hollow has been a fun ride (uh, haunt?), and I trust Retrotainment to deliver a satisfying finale.

This looks like a fun project, but I’m a little burnt out on retro-style games. There are so many out there now, and unless Haunted Halloween 87 does something groundbreaking, I might pass. That said, the broomstick sections sound intriguing—if the reviews are good, I might pick up the Steam version later.
