I have a lot of PS2 games already so it's kind of hard to list.

Hoping to get FFXII, Shadow Hearts

There's a ton of great games on the PS2. But hard to recommend anything. Try getting Rogue Galaxy though, thats a recent, cel shaded RPG that was released.

FFXII... I dont know your tastes but FF12 has a lot of mixed reviews. This is because there's no story. And when I say there's no story, I mean that there is a story but it's so poorly told, confusing, and forgettable, that there might as well not be one at all.

I'm a little more than half way through the game, myself. I picked it up finally because I wanted to say I at least played and beat all the main FF games (FF11 being an exception cause you can never beat it but I played the damn thing.). FF12 is very unforgiving about names and titles. When they mention a location or describe a character's significance, they will never do so again. Ever. If you can't remember every little detail of the plot being fed to you (what little there is), you will get lost in the "knighly" talk. Most of the characters speak like poetic knights which can sometimes lose you if you really arent paying absolute attention

The plot is actually just a war plot. Some nation invades another, the smaller nation wants it's sovereignty and is fighting political battles over it. And there's some evil guy at the top of the chain who wants all out war for some reason or another.

The game never really introduces the characters to you, instead the characters are thrown at you or they are shown to you passingly with no real significance. And then these same characters go through a dramatic scene that comes out of no where and makes you wonder if you should care. The sad music is playing and you want to care, but Square didnt bother giving you a reason or an attachment to any of the characters to care.

If you liked FFX or previous FFs like FF7, 8, etc, FF12 is really different so it's difficult to say whether you will like it. But the chances seem high you might not like it. I think FF12 is a good game. But I couldnt be more bored with the plot and the story. A lot of FF fans are split in the middle over it.

I suggest you rent it before a full purchase. I warn you because I care. -_-

That rant is over. You know, everyone says they like Shadow Hearts but I never could get into that game series. I'm not sure why everyone likes it so much. When I played it, it seemed like an average, by the books, RPG with nothing special.

Dragon Quest 8 is a fantastic RPG you might want to consider. I loved it but that's because Im a Dragon Quest fan boy. It was a terribly short game so if you pick it up, remember to take your time with it. Because once it's over, it's over. (I tried to make that sucker last as long as possible. I would avoid progressing the main story like a plague and explore.)

(rest cut for length)
I got FFXII a couple weeks ago.
I understand why people don't like it, but to say there's no story isn't fair. Yes, it didn't have a decent amount of character development, and the story wasn't as personal; but what characterisation there was was pretty good, and the storyline IS good, it's just disliked because it's more about the whole group/ nations rather than individuals, and unfortunately that was a mistake in the eyes of fans. Give me this over Suikoden V any day, but yeah, there are better games...

Still, the gameplay is pretty good, and the music is great; the only big thing I feel that lets me down with this game is that it is TOO LONG. It's amazing to be able to say that about a game; quite a feat in fact, and just shows that sometimes you should be careful about wanting games to be longer when they're already a substantial length.

I got:
Final Fantasy XII (played about 25 hours so far and barely half way through)
Fahrenheit (amazing game)
Devil May Cry 3 (alright... But not amazing)
Suikoden V (extremely disapointed, and definitely a bad introduction to the franchise. Badly executed story, bad pacing, bad characterisation and average gameplay)
Dragon Quest VIII (hoping this will be good, and have lots of good characterisation despite a silent protaganist >_<)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (well, Sons of Liberty was quite possibly THE best game ever, so I finally got hold of this, and it's awesome, even if it is annoying at times and my bad condition second hand copy fucked up on codec conversations >_<)
Onimusha 3 (broken second hand copy, ugh >_>)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (sounds really cool, looking forward to it)
Beyond Good and Evil (good game, but I got distracted)

Once I've gotten through these I'll look into some more. Already interesting me are God Hand (sounds/ looks cool, heard it's good), Valkyrie Profile (looks interesting but expensive), Shadow of the Colossus (didn't like Ico so much but appreciate it as artistic, and this sounds good, but expensive), Shadow Hearts series (REALLY wanna play these, but rare as hell and so expensive), Kingdom Hearts 2 (loved KH1 when I first played it, but kind of lost interest in this and had it all spoiled already).

Yeah, like I said it's a mixed bag. People like me will claim there's no story (when there is one) because it doesn't grab them. I agree, about disliking it because it's less personal and more about nations. But at the same time, I think they could have told the plot and sold the player on the story better than how they did. As a player I feel a disconnect to a lot of the characters. And the main character is a background character that doesn't seem to have a place in this group of eccentric characters.

I'm not sure about the game being too long. If you stick to the main story, it's fairly short or average length. Though doing all those marks (which can be fun or boring depending on tastes) does eat up hours. I bought the game a few weeks ago and I still haven't beaten it. But then, I havent played it every single day either, like I would previous FFs.

Dragon Quest VIII (hoping this will be good, and have lots of good characterisation despite a silent protaganist >_<)

Yeah, DQ always has a silent protaganist in a way. But it's good (classic, even) because you can sort of lend your own voice to the main hero. You can form his identity or personality as you play; Imagining your own reactions to an event or character dialog onto the main character.

It doesnt have the best of stories. It's really just a fan-wank game for anyone who loved DQ games. It didn't receive too much praise from reviewers and likewise gamers who were not fans of the series or hadnt played the series before. I know I was in love because it felt like the entire world of DQ just came to life in full cel-shaded, animated 3D.

It's worth a play through just to see all the great monster models.

man rogue galaxy, disgaea 1 and 2 and star ocean:till the end of time are great! onthe disgaea 1 and 2 tip though....the prism rangers are hilarious.

i have god hand. its a reall fun game and the kind of justice(err..punishment) you can deliver is straight up foolish but let me warn you that the controls are a force to be reckoned with.once over that hurdle, its a fun game.
