Well, me and the Rave Master, err, JusticeBandit, umm...HenshinHoncho? err, anyway, Keith, were having a throwback discussion on the different generations of Power Rangers and I thought It would be a cool discussion to continue here with everyone. Also, he's agreed to let me post some of the chatlog, so here ya go:
But first, I think we all at least least have to slightly agree, Power Ranges is somewhat cheesy.
KeithCrichton: yo
OtakuEphram: You guys don't find Power Rangers cheesy at all?
KeithCrichton: of course. ^_^
OtakuEphram: is that why you like it? =P
KeithCrichton: but when you're not cynical and jaded... just relax and have fun, somtimes cheesie can be a lot offun.
OtakuEphram: heh
KeithCrichton: we like it because of the massive universe that's been created.
KeithCrichton: best martial arts on television.
OtakuEphram: Dino Thunder interested me because of the return of an original cast member
KeithCrichton: fun and kickass executions and new spins on traditions.
OtakuEphram: I watched from the beginning of Mighty Morphin
OtakuEphram: till
KeithCrichton: yeah... that was cool, but the story mapping of the show sucked.
KeithCrichton: you're more than welcome to bring up this thread on the board.
OtakuEphram: what do you mean?
KeithCrichton: no one'll kill you and anyone who even thinks about flaming you'll have to answer to me.
KeithCrichton: ask why it is we dig on Power Rangers.
OtakuEphram: i liked PR too
KeithCrichton: then there's Kamen Rider that as dark as any Buffy or Angel episode.
OtakuEphram: what about Ultraman? =P
KeithCrichton: no pun intended, but i'm not too big a fan.
KeithCrichton: others are the board dig it, and apparently the latest series is suppose to be very dark and gritty.
KeithCrichton: I just don't get a kick out of heroes that grow big... the fights are far too lumbering to be impressive at all.
OtakuEphram: i believe i fell off of PR towards the end of Season 3 of Mighty Morphin
KeithCrichton: i believe i stopped liking it myself somewhere around there.
KeithCrichton: don't know why i kept watching it... guess i was dedicated to the bitter end.
OtakuEphram: I have the movie and VHS and the movie is pretty awesome
KeithCrichton: the in Space came and changed everything we knew about the show and brought some INCREDIBLE stories and worlds.
KeithCrichton: first movie i thought was awesome... second was dreadful.
KeithCrichton: good to see the return of Jason and Kimberly, but gah!
OtakuEphram: i believe I saw some of Zeo and Turbo but it didn't really hit with me
OtakuEphram: never saw the second movie
KeithCrichton: only think i liked about Zeo was the return of Jason and the Gold Ranger costume was almost the coolest to date.
OtakuEphram: Never saw any of In Space, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed Rescue, or Time Force
KeithCrichton: Space, Lost Galaxy, and Time Force were PR's finest moments.
KeithCrichton: or so you'll find among the fandom.
OtakuEphram: guess i missed out then
KeithCrichton: only thing the classics have is that they have the classic characters of legend.
OtakuEphram: LR sucked?
OtakuEphram: huh?
KeithCrichton: yeah...
KeithCrichton: wasn't really done well.
KeithCrichton: some good in there, but overall.... bleh....
OtakuEphram: the classic ledgends?
KeithCrichton: Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Tommy, Billy and Trini....
KeithCrichton: while in a string of really dumb episodes, they're still legends.
OtakuEphram: I loved the progonal cast
OtakuEphram: *err, original
KeithCrichton: me too....
OtakuEphram: I believe Billy was my favorite Character
KeithCrichton: i just got tired of episodes where pies were throne and Bulk and Skull took up air time to act stupid.
OtakuEphram: i recall watching the characters sloly get replaced one by one
OtakuEphram: and hoping Billy didn't
OtakuEphram: he DID hang in there for a while
OtakuEphram: Tommy was always awesome
OtakuEphram: from Green Ranger to White
KeithCrichton: i liked him as Green, but for me, after that.... i wasn't impressed.
OtakuEphram: i used to have a replica of the sword.instrument thing he used to call the green ranger's zord
KeithCrichton: nice.
OtakuEphram: i used to have a poster of the MMPR too, don't know what ever happened to that
OtakuEphram: back to the seasons,
OtakuEphram: Wild Force looked REALLY terrible to me
KeithCrichton: heh... i just have some morphers... got me a PR gun on the way.
KeithCrichton: Wild Force... mix bag, no one really loved it all that much, but it contained one of the greatst crossovers of all time, bringing back the phenomenal cast of Time Force
OtakuEphram: man, i remember sed to play being PRs in the back yard, heh
KeithCrichton: also, it had the landmark, pinnicle of PR greatness the special.... FOREVER RED.
KeithCrichton: heh... i wish i'd gotten to play PR in the back hard.
OtakuEphram: I saw Forever Red, THAT I liked
KeithCrichton: we mostly played Voltron... Transformers... random fantasy or sci-fi stuff with plastic sword and blaster in hand.
OtakuEphram: Forever Red Rocked
OtakuEphram: even tho i didn't know most of the characters
KeithCrichton: no denying that.
KeithCrichton: only thing that sucked about it was how they destroyed Serpentara.
OtakuEphram: don't quite recall
KeithCrichton: Cole hopped on his magic motorcycle and beat it single handedly.
OtakuEphram: Cole...uh
KeithCrichton: Red Wild Force.
OtakuEphram: ok
OtakuEphram: I had HIGH liking of Ninja Storm
KeithCrichton: i respect that, but you better be able to back up your claim, or be okay with others.... most everyone hated it with a passion.
OtakuEphram: but somehow i missed too many or something and had to give it up
OtakuEphram: well, i didn't see enough of it to really know my opinion
OtakuEphram: The cgi hampster master was lame
KeithCrichton: hey, i much preferred the puppet in Hurricanger. ;-)
OtakuEphram: and PR was a comic book, thouroughly erasing the connection to prior seasons
OtakuEphram: like what the did with Digimon Tamers
KeithCrichton: and enraging all the fans...
OtakuEphram: yeah
KeithCrichton: but, with the Ninja Storm/Dino Thunder cross over.. that was fixed.
OtakuEphram: when did that happen
KeithCrichton: during Dino Thunder.
OtakuEphram: okay
KeithCrichton: pretty good episode, too.
OtakuEphram: Dino Thunder looked really cool
OtakuEphram: especially with the return of an older Tommy
KeithCrichton: it had its moments...
OtakuEphram: i watched the first episodes when they had that ALL STARS marathon
OtakuEphram: but then in the last hour of Jetix that day they skipped ahead in episodes, so, i never saw more of it
KeithCrichton: Dino Thunder and Ninja Storm was the return of Doug Sloan... PR's original producer and the guy behind a lot of the stuff i hated.
KeithCrichton: he took the teeth that PR had had off and that pissed a lot of fans off.
OtakuEphram: what do you mean?
KeithCrichton: around the time with Doug left, PR took on more of a sci-fi action tone.
KeithCrichton: no hammy comic relief characters, but Rangers traveling the galaxy, planets, and beatin' down bad guys left and right.
OtakuEphram: heh i guess i missed all that
KeithCrichton: all elements lead toward a winner take all free for all that in Space involved the entire planet Earth and all the other planets ever mentioned in PR history to that point.
KeithCrichton: then Lost Galaxy was a titanic duke out on a space station that crashed...
KeithCrichton: and it went on like that.. lotta legends forged.
OtakuEphram: the original yellow ranger died?
KeithCrichton: then Doug came back with Ninja Storm and people were utterly disgusted with how horrible "teenagers" were portrayed and how many times they could say "dude" in one episode.
KeithCrichton: yup... Thuy Trang passed away in a car accident.
OtakuEphram: see, i've only saw the really cheesy PR then
OtakuEphram: that's a shame
OtakuEphram: i guess they dedicated a Time Force episode to her?
KeithCrichton: not the episode, but at the end i think i remember it saying something about "in memory of..."
OtakuEphram: sad
KeithCrichton: yeah...
OtakuEphram: SPD just doesn't appeal to me, not when i saw the previews, and not now
OtakuEphram: first off that's a really bad costume the dog guy has
OtakuEphram: and it just seems lame
OtakuEphram: am i wrong?
KeithCrichton: eh... i prefer the even cheesier and more welcoming furry design of the original Doggie Krueger in DekaRanger.
KeithCrichton: most folk consider SPD to be the second coming of Power Rangers.
OtakuEphram: it's good?
KeithCrichton: now that Doug's gone, the sho has back its teeth, scenes are *actually* funny, and the action is just off the hook!
KeithCrichton: i absolutely love it, and it's the best i've seen of power rangers innnnn.... about four years now.
OtakuEphram: for some reason, your avatar doesn't fully load all the time
KeithCrichton: Anubis Crueger's costume.... well, i wouldn't go as far as to call it lame. with Power Rangers you have to go head first and use your imagination for everything... which is one of the reasons why i like the show.
OtakuEphram: Ultraman was horrrbbly I can't spell that dubbed on the Fox Box
OtakuEphram: but then again
OtakuEphram: pretty much any dub over the original japanese actors is bad
KeithCrichton: true... rarely does it look right.
OtakuEphram: ever seen Kung Pow: Enter The Fist?
OtakuEphram: THAT is true hilarity
Yeah, we dipped into a few other areas, but that's alright. I'm sure you guys would love to share some of your opinions with us. :198:
