Last week I had to do an essay on moral panics, where the media takes a group/ problem/ issue, and sensationalises/ exaggerates/ fabricates information about it to create a panic in the public. Part of it I had to talk about the panic about immigration, including a headline from a tabloid newspaper (The Sun) about Immigrants 'eating the Queen's Birds' (swans), and the usual stereotypes/ stealing our jobs etc.

I thought it wasn't as bad any more, but today I noticed this headline at a service station:
"IMMIGRANTS BRING MORE CRIME"

It's bad enough they print crap like this, but how is it legal for them to have the title 'The World's Greatest Newspaper' under the name?

I wrote a lengthy research paper on immigration last year. I still remember it...though it was on immigration and socialization in the United States. I wouldn't know about Britain's border conditions, but I agree with you on the absurdity of that article. I don't think claiming to be the "World's Greatest Newspaper" is illegal, but it's pretty ridiculous when they have errors in there. Unless "drink- driving" is just an idiom over there, their grammatical errors definitely don't contribute to their self-described greatness.

Although there's probably some truth in what's being reported (just like there's definitely negatives to immigration here in the US...which I don't want to get into)...it really is terrible that they're printing that.

Not really sure what you're driving at here... it might not be 100% truth, but homeless and unemployed immigration often does lead to heightened crime rates.

Reminds me of the "Illegal Immigrants" thread. Don't even wanna go back to that. I wrote a paper on Immigration earlier this year too & had a lot of the same thoughts as the teacher because she wrote "true" everywhere. XD

Yeah, but crime jumps up dramatically for the unemployed in every demographic. You could be a 10th generation natural born citizen, if you've got no job and nowhere to live, you're much more likely to be desperate enough to turn to crime.

Immigration has little to do with it except adding a small percentage to the overall pool of jobless people.

Maybe they're just being too general with their statistics. If a sample of such-and-such a number of people committing crimes is normally distributed, they're more likely to attribute to such-and-such a mean number of immigrants, or maybe there's some kind of immigrant outlier spike. Or maybe the paper is just making **** up.
