I recently picked up from Amazon Japan OhRanger Volume 1 because they had it for 35% off and after watching the first disc (eps 1-6), I am still trying to figure out why people do not like this show. Granted, I've seen the entire thing in poor quality, but these first episodes were incredible. I mean, it starts off with an invasion, shows off how powerful the rangers are, takes their sweet time to get to the mecha, while also being extremely dark. The footsoldiers are probably the most terrifying footsoldiers ever. What is there not to like? Why do people hate the show so much? Sure, it isn't as good as its two predecessors or its successor, but it is one of the better series out there.

Well I know Japan's reason for it's low acceptence, which I've heard a billion times, but I actually don't know why hju/international fans don't like it. I'd like to know that.

Yeah, the first few episodes are good. But then when the show decides to switch tones, it just becomes a random mess of goofcorn, overloaded with merchandise.

The reason why the show took a drastic turn was because of the Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. After that they cut out a lot of the really dark stuff and made it more light hearted. If that attack never happened, this probably would have been the darkest sentai next to Jetman and Liveman.

I heard from youtube and /m/ I think that they didn't really care for the fact show was based around war like so many of the other Giant Mecha shows

Well that is what makes it interesting. And all Sentai series are based around war, because that is what they are about. Good guys are fighting bad guys.

Anyway, Kivat, enlighten me. Or is what Vitor said the reason Japanese did not like it (which I did not know). I find it kind of childish that they decided to change the tone of a show because of some terrorist attack. Yeah, it happens, but still, I just find changing a freaking tv show tone that is far from reality dumb because of some idiot or idiots.

With that said, like I said, I love it and it is a shame Saban did not use this footage for Power Rangers Zeo. For one thing, showing how terrifying the Machine Empire was as Zordon proclaimed would have been much better by using the invasion footage in the first two episodes. Not just that, but they could have really shown off how powerful the Zeo crystal was by showing the footage of the battle between the rangers and the giant monster, which ended with the rangers defeating it without the mecha. Man, I never realized how many missed opportunities Zeo had to be a truly outstanding series until now.

Ironically I've read that while the ratings fell drastically after the tone shift, the toy sales picked up massively. This played a big role in Toei's decision to make Sentai more and more kid-oriented, and start putting more emphasis on the toys.

So for people who prefer their Sentai being dark and serious and hate the modern tendency towards light-heartedness and toy rush... you can in fact blame the Aum Shinrikyo. :P
