Nintendo Could Be Thinking About A Donkey Kong Movie

It’s a great week to be Donkey Kong — his biggest starring role in years, Donkey Kong Bananza, ships for Switch 2 later this week, and now we’re hearing rumors he may have inked a deal to star in his own feature film. The press has spotted a joint copyright filing between Nintendo and Universal Pictures for something called “Untitled Donkey Kong Project.” No, it’s not a game (why would you think that if Universal was involved)…the filing specifically states it’s a “motion picture,” though nothing else beyond that. Nintendo, as you know, is incredibly secretive about its own projects and prefers not to reveal them until they’re very close to complete. They’d probably prefer no one noticed that filing, which has to be public beyond their control. We didn’t know about Donkey Kong Bananza until earlier this year, and Nintendo has confirmed it’s been in development for years, intended for the original Switch until they discovered the destructive environments needed more horsepower than that machine could produce. Nintendo and Universal have likely just started their plans for a DK feature — and they could change. When a movie is this early in development, there are no guarantees it will […]

A Donkey Kong movie, huh? Let me guess — Seth Rogen again? I still can’t get over the laugh. It was funny the first three times, then it just became the whole character.

Look, I don’t hate the idea. DK’s world could look cool on screen. Jungle backdrops, Kremlings, maybe even Funky Kong doing surf tricks. But if it’s just another celebrity voice parade, I’ll probably skip it. Nintendo needs to realize that fans care about the game worlds more than famous actors.

Also, it’s 2025. Can we stop announcing stuff five years early? Call me when there’s an actual teaser.

I hope this movie happens! I loved Donkey Kong in the Mario movie and wanted to see more of him. He was funny and strong, and I like that he’s a bit silly too. I play Donkey Kong Country with my dad on his old console and it’s still fun even though it’s an old game. I want to see Diddy Kong and the whole Kong family in a movie. Maybe Cranky can tell more jokes. I think it would be super cool if they make the movie with lots of adventure, like jumping on barrels and riding in mine carts. They should also make some toys from the movie. I would totally collect them. Please don’t cancel it. I want to watch it in theaters!

I’m not automatically sold on the idea. Just because the Mario movie made money doesn’t mean every Nintendo character deserves a solo film. Donkey Kong is iconic, sure, but he’s also pretty one-note. He’s strong, loud, and… that’s about it. Can you really build an entire story around that?

They’ll have to give him more depth than the games usually do. Otherwise it’s just going to be a bunch of action scenes with little meaning. I’m also curious about the tone. The Mario movie leaned heavily into humor and nostalgia. Will they do the same here, or try something different?

It’s true that a jungle setting could be visually interesting, but I need more than that to be excited. If Nintendo wants to build a cinematic universe, they should think carefully about story and character development.

For now, I’m not convinced. Let’s see what the scriptwriters come up with.

I remember playing the original Donkey Kong in the arcade when it first came out. Back then, it was just barrels and ladders. It’s funny how far the character has come. I’m glad he’s still relevant today. If they’re really making a movie, I hope they respect the history. Donkey Kong has changed a lot, especially after Donkey Kong Country came out. That’s the version most people know now — with the full Kong family and the island setting. I’d love to see that world animated properly on the big screen. But I also hope they don’t forget his roots. Maybe include a little reference to Mario or the classic arcade days. I think that would be a nice touch for older fans like me.The Mario movie was fun, and if Universal handles this with care, I think it could work. I’m definitely open to it.
