Netflix’s Narnia Reboot: Meryl Streep as Aslan? The Controversy of Gender and Race Swaps

Narnia is sacred to me, and Aslan has always been a wise, fatherly protector. Changing his voice to a female one disrupts the feeling I grew up with. I have nothing against Meryl Streep, but I don’t see the point of altering a character who was already perfect. Nostalgia isn’t just about familiarity—it’s about keeping the heart of a story alive. I worry that Netflix is prioritizing controversy over authenticity.

I get why some fans are upset, especially those who have loved the Narnia books for decades. Aslan has been this very iconic figure, representing something very specific. Changing his gender isn’t a small thing for people who’ve followed the original work closely. But, at the same time, the world of cinema has always adapted stories to fit new interpretations. I think it’s fine for directors to try new things, as long as the essence of the character isn’t lost. But I do wonder if this choice was made for marketing reasons, you know? The idea of shaking things up to get people talking. Maybe the gender swap isn’t the problem, but more about how it might affect the core message of the story. I’m personally curious to see how Greta Gerwig will handle this, even if I understand why others are so upset.

I think it’s kind of hilarious how mad people are getting over a fictional lion. I mean, come on! Aslan has always been this grand symbol, but I don't think swapping the gender will ruin the whole story. People should just let Gerwig do her thing and see where it goes. If it doesn’t work, fine, but why judge it before we even see the film? We live in an age where gender and identity are fluid, and it’s a good time to explore that in movies.

I think it’s safe to say this is going to ruin the entire movie for a lot of people. Aslan is not just a character, he’s the heart of the story, and changing his gender undermines everything the books stand for. It’s one thing to take some liberties in an adaptation, but messing with the spiritual symbolism behind Aslan is a huge mistake. I’m really disappointed, and I can’t imagine how this is going to go over well with the fans. I’m all for inclusivity, but this just feels like a step too far. I’m not interested in supporting this at all.
