Netflix’s Narnia Reboot: Meryl Streep in Talks to Play Aslan? When news broke that Meryl Streep is in talks to join Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia reboot for Netflix, fans immediately assumed she would play the White Witch. Streep’s commanding presence and elegance seemed a perfect fit, much like Tilda Swinton’s portrayal in the 2005 film adaptation. However, reports now suggest that Streep may actually voice Aslan. Female voice actors have portrayed many iconic male characters in animation, such as: Nancy Cartwright as Bart Simpson (The Simpsons) Christine Cavanaugh as Dexter (Dexter’s Laboratory) June Foray as Rocky (Rocky and Bullwinkle) Kath Soucie as Phil and Lil (Rugrats) The Cautionary Tale of Controversial Character Changes This situation brings to mind other controversies surrounding character changes that led to significant backlash. Ghost in the Shell (2017) and Dragonball Evolution (2009) stand as prime examples of whitewashing, where fans criticized the casting of white actors in roles traditionally linked to specific cultural identities. In Ghost in the Shell, Scarlett Johansson played Major Motoko Kusanagi, a character originally Japanese in the anime and manga, sparking outrage over the missed opportunity to cast an Asian actress. Similarly, Dragonball Evolution cast Justin Chatwin, a white […]

I'm concerned. I grew up with the Narnia books, and Aslan is a male character. It's not about being sexist; it's about staying true to the story. Why change something that works? They should create new characters if they want to be diverse. I do not think this is a good idea

I think the backlash is overblown. People need to get over themselves. Meryl Streep is a legend, and she can play any role. This could be a refreshing take on Aslan. I am a fan of change. I am ready for the new movie.

I'm actually quite excited about Meryl Streep as Aslan. I think people are too hung up on tradition. Aslan is a symbol of power and wisdom, and Streep embodies that. Gender is irrelevant. If they can pull it off, it might actually add a new layer to the character. We need to be open to these changes. The old movies were fine, but they were missing something. I think this will bring a new depth to the movie. I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

Oh, I can already picture the YouTube reactionaries. You know, the usual suspects. YellowFlash, TheQuartering, Ben Shapiro... I can practically hear the indignant screeching about 'woke agendas' and 'destroying childhoods.' They'll be frothing at the mouth, claiming this is some kind of cultural apocalypse. It's almost predictable. I am ready to see the youtube videos that will come from this. I am expecting a lot of negativity

I'm reserving judgment. Let's see how it plays out. Greta Gerwig is a talented director, and Meryl Streep is a fantastic actress. If anyone can make this work, it's them. I think they can pull it off. I am ready to see the movie.

This is a classic case of Hollywood overthinking things. Sometimes, you just need to leave things as they are. Aslan is Aslan. Why complicate things? I hope they see the errors of their ways. I am not happy about this.

I understand the concerns about the casting, but I genuinely don't think this will flop. Let’s be realistic, it’s a Netflix production. Streaming services have a different audience, and frankly, it's a far more accessible format for many people. Think about it: a whole family can watch it for the price of a monthly subscription, which is significantly cheaper than theater tickets. That alone gives it a wider potential audience.

Also, comparing Meryl Streep to Rachel Zegler is a bit of a stretch. Streep, while certainly having her views, doesn’t carry the same level of recent, highly politicized public discourse. That kind of thing can definitely affect public perception. Meryl Streep is a respected actress who has the ability to draw in a large audience. I think the movie will be very popular.

I’m so tired of Hollywood constantly changing things just for the sake of being different. Aslan is supposed to be a strong, fatherly figure. Meryl Streep is a great actress, but her voice does not fit the role. This kind of stunt casting only alienates long-time fans. It’s not about sexism or being against diversity—it’s about respecting the source material. If they keep making these changes, people will stop caring about these adaptations.
