[Anime] Neon Genesis Evangelion (General Discussion Thread)

I plan to buy those but, from what I've heard...

1.01 (or 1.11) is generally a recap then 2.22 and onwards make up their own story such as adding a new mech pilot and so forth.

This. And here's to hoping we get a proper ending this time.

It began well but starting episode 14 it turned into one big lump of production issues and poor writing. Sad, really.

Watch the Rebuild movies, it is a totally fucking awesome re-imagining of the series. I'm counting down the days until 3.33 comes out. :buttrock:

An Evangelion discussion? Really?

What's left to say?

I've been an Evangelion fan for over a decade, it's the only anime I like and the only piece of Japanese fiction I would ever seriously recommend. That said, I understand why people don't like it. When it first aired it was a deconstruction of the show that many were expecting to see. Today it's a meme or a joke depending on who you talk to. You can't start watching the series for the first time in 2012 without knowing that the ending is confusing, that half of Japan's objects feature Rei or any other number of things. You also can't start watching it without expecting to be either awestruck or outraged, so it might not be possible to give Evangelion a "fair" chance anymore. I feel the same way about shows that were big in mainstream culture when they aired like Lost or Battlestar Galactica - It's almost impossible to start one of these shows "fresh" if you ever left the house while they were on the air.

That's not to say that I discount any criticisms of the show. It's vague, it really falls apart at the end (the first time) and the live-action scene from EoE is pretentious. So, I get it. I just think it sucks that it's a joke.

Someone asked if the Rebuild movies are worth watching, and they very much are, but like the eleventh Star Trek movie they're made to be enjoyed on their own but are much better if you've seen the original.

last night i finally 1.0 and i was quite impressed. it didn't feel like a rehash at all. to me, i think this how Hideaki Anoo wanted the seiries in the first place, with the flashy effects and all. the small moments/converstations not in the origianl added a really nice touch. i didn't expect the ending though.

i felt the need to make a thread about my favorite anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. i'll start by saying that i enjoyed both endings.

your turn.

I only acknowledge the series and the one movie. Of which I thought the series still had the best ending. It was so fucked up and yet made just enough sense for you to talk about it for YEARs. If the ending made any kind of logical sense, no one would have gave a **** about the series. It was the second half and the twisted ending that really blew all of our minds
