Metalder is one of the best, most romantic tokus ever made. It for sure has one of the best soundtracks in toku, and yes, someone definetely needs to sub this classic one day. Unlike many older tokus, I'm actually not neutral toward the heroes: I like Ryuusei, TopGunder and Rhapsody (at least when the latter two switch sides), and Mai and Hakkou for their roles as Ryuusei's connection to the human world. One has to appreciate Ryuusei's situation throughout the whole show: he, being a robot, can never fully live among humans, and the only other robots he encounters are enemies. The fact that he is a robot capable of compassion also leads to some great moments in irony, especially when he encounters humans of a less-than-noble nature. (Episode 3 is a great example). To respond to the thread starter, I'm not sure myself whether he dies or is permanently broken. But the point of him sacrificing something for the sake of others is still poignant no matter what it is.
Regarding the villains, here is another classic group. I like the idea of terrorist/underworld groups in superhero sagas in general, but the Neros Empire takes it a step further as far as toku villains go. Nearly everyone gets some kind of characterization. They're not just fodder for Ryuusei to fight and kill, and most of them survive until near the finale. The ranking system reminded me of real terror groups like the old Black Panthers, who also had their own brand of ranks for their members. And of course, the designs were excellent. (It's a pity that Toei rarely makes good robot costumes anymore. The Gaiarc are a joke compared to the Battle Robot and Armament Armies). And let's not forget the imagery of Empire members often dueling in the Ghost Bank with Godneros watching from his throne. This isn't a friendly bunch.
So in conclusion, anyone who is a toku fan should watch Metalder. Of course lack of subs will prevent some from doing so. If subs existed I would implore my friends who have already been introduced to toku to watch this show. But if you can stomach raws, find this show ASAP. It's worth the price at the door.
