Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Expands Into Comics

Last year Apple TV launched a television series meant to expand the world of WB and Legendary’s Monsterverse films: you know, the ones that star Godzilla, King Kong, or both Godzilla and King Kong at the same time. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters did pretty well in its first season and Apple quickly ordered a second (as an aside, they really should’ve given Mythic Quest at least one more season, darnit). No one knows when the second season of Monarch will show up, but you’ll be able to fill the gap soon with a new comic book by Legendary Comics and Rocketship. Monarch: The Lost Adventures is a graphic novel anthology depicting the unseen adventures of Lee Shaw, Billy Randa, Keiko, Kentaro, Cate, and May — and we’re told big boys like Kong, the Brambleboar, and The Ion Dragon could drop in for a visit or two. The Kickstarter campaign for the book launched yesterday. “This anthology is a love letter to fans of MONARCH and the larger Monsterverse,” says Robert Napton, SVP & Publisher at Legendary Comics. “Each story reveals pivotal, untold moments that add rich new layers to the characters and mythology. We’re thrilled to team up with Rocketship […]

I enjoyed the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters a lot, and I was hoping for more background on the characters. The show felt like it had many hidden stories, especially with Keiko and Shaw. I'm glad they are exploring these in comic form. The Brambleboar and Ion Dragon sound so cool. I like that the comics will not only have monsters but also focus on personal stories. That balance is what made the show feel different from just action movies. I'm definitely going to back the Kickstarter. I just hope the comic team finishes the work on time and that the second season of the show still happens. Sometimes shows get cancelled and that would be disappointing. Anyway, I think this is a good way to keep the Monsterverse alive in between big projects.

Honestly, this is a smart move. I’ve been collecting comics for years, and when done right, tie-in anthologies like this one can really expand a universe in deep ways. The creative team looks solid, especially with names like Paul Cornell and Marguerite Bennett involved. I’m especially curious about the Skull Island part with Kentaro and Kong — that could give us some much-needed lore. Also, it’s nice to see the quieter characters like Cate and May get their own stories. Not everything has to be giant monster fights. Sometimes the emotional side of the world makes it more real. I already backed it for the exclusive cover. Can’t wait to see how the artists bring these Titans to life on the page.

Give me more monsters! That’s all I want. Brambleboar, Ion Dragon, Kong — sounds great. I didn’t care much about the human characters in the show, but if these comics bring more fights, more creature designs, I’m all in. I don’t need a deep story, just cool art and big monster action. Hope the artists go crazy with the designs. I'm pledging for the digital version, because I just want to see the monsters without paying for shipping.

I love how this comic is focusing on smaller moments and side stories. A lot of people just want the action, but for me, it’s the personal history that makes the show interesting. Shaw looking back on his past? Keiko in Axis Mundi? These kinds of stories make the world feel bigger and more lived-in. Plus, it looks like they’re giving the artists and writers space to be creative. I don’t usually support Kickstarters, but this one seems worth it. It’s also cool that they’re acknowledging the fans like this.

I would love to support this, but $40 plus shipping is too much for me. The digital version at $15 is better, but I like holding books, especially with nice art. Maybe later they’ll sell it in stores or have a cheaper version. I still think it’s a great idea though. More Lee Shaw content is always a win for me.

As someone who writes stories myself, I think anthologies like this are great because you can tell many different types of stories in the same world. You don’t need to follow one timeline, and you can try different tones and styles. I’m looking forward to how each creative team makes their chapter feel unique. And the idea of Axis Mundi and new monsters is really inspiring. I wish more franchises did this.

I didn’t talk much about the show when it aired, but I really liked it. It made me feel something I don’t get from other monster movies. There was sadness and beauty. I think the comics will give more of that. I like when stories take their time with the small parts. I’m going to back it because I want to see more of this world.
