Matt Fraction And Chip Zdarsky’s ‘Sex Criminals’ To Become Prime Video Series

Amazon Prime Video has just given an eight-episode first season order for a live-action adaption of the comic book Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. The first issue of Sex Criminals came out in 2013 and there have been attempts to adapt it before. None have taken off, likely because…well, the title is very literal. It’s about a couple named Suzie and Jon who discover that, for unexplained reasons, time stops whenever they make whoopee. Since they’re not above theft, they realize they can exploit this to steal pretty much anything, starting with the vaults in the bank Jon works at. They’ve just, y’know, gotta do it naked and post-coitus, then quickly put their clothes back on before time snaps back to its normal rhythm. There is no getting out of the NC-17-ness of such a premise, especially if you’re doing it in live-action. It was probably turned down at other studios for that reason. But Prime Video, which allowed an orgy episode of The Boys, clearly has no such qualms. Sex Criminals is happening! And it’s starring everybody’s best friend, Kumail Nanjiani, who’s been in everything lately. He was just in a minor role on Fallout! He’s […]

Okay, I have to say, I’m both nervous and curious about this. The premise sounds super strange and kind of ridiculous, but I feel like that’s the point. I’ve read some of the comics before, and they have this mix of humor, romance, and really odd situations that somehow work. Seeing it in live-action feels like it could go badly if handled wrong, but with Kumail Nanjiani involved, I have hope. He’s funny, relatable, and can carry weird material without making it feel gross. I just wonder how far they will push the more adult content since NC-17 stuff is always tricky to make work on screen without turning people off. I feel like it could either become something really fun and clever or a total mess. Honestly, I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the characters and how the stealing scenes will be shot. Hopefully, they don’t shy away from the humor and awkwardness of it.

I read Sex Criminals when it first came out and I never thought it would get adapted into live-action, but I’m glad it is. The comic had a perfect balance of humor, romance, and ridiculousness that made it really unique. I’m excited to see Kumail Nanjiani as Jon because he has the right mix of awkwardness and charm. I just hope they don’t shy away from the weirdness that made it special. Prime seems willing to take risks, which is good, and I’m hoping they keep the clever heist elements intact. The comic had heart beneath the crazy premise, and I want to see that come through on screen too. I’m curious about how long the show will take to release, but I’ll definitely be watching.

The comic was always ridiculous, but it had smart writing and likable characters. I love that they aren’t shying away from the adult elements, because that’s kind of the point of the story. I’m a bit worried about the live-action adaptation though, because translating the comic’s style into real life could go wrong easily. Kumail Nanjiani seems like a good fit, though, and if his wife Emily is involved, maybe that helps the chemistry feel natural. I also wonder about the heist scenes—those were some of my favorite parts of the comic, and if they can capture that energy on screen, it could be really entertaining. I’m cautiously excited to see how they pull it off.

Another comic getting turned into a show. Great. Sex Criminals was funny in the pages because it was so ridiculous, but live-action? With real naked people stopping time? I don’t know, man. It’s gonna lose half the charm when it’s not drawn by Zdarsky anymore. Kumail’s cool, but I’m not sold yet. Hope they don’t ruin it

Okay, straight up, I’m here for the sex scenes. The whole time-stop-during-orgasm thing is genius and I’ve always wondered how they’d film it. Kumail Nanjiani getting to do this kind of role? Yes please. He’s funny, he’s hot, and he’s got the range. Emily V. Gordon producing too means it won’t be some sleazy mess. This could actually be good AND steamy. I’m marking my calendar already.
