Masked Rider on DVD!

Godzilla did make appearances in England, but not the Japanese Godzilla, just the crappy American Godzilla.

Although I hear that Channel 4 still gives the old films (Toho's international prints) from time to time!

And as for Monkey, from what I heard isn't really a Tokusatsu and is actually a Chinese show rather than a Japanese show.

Monkey is not only indeed a tokusatsu series, but it is a Japanese show based on a Chinese legend (which has been adapted in countless Japanese movies/shows).

Just to make sure you know: "Tokusatsu" is the Japanese term for live-action SPFX fantasies from Japan (movies, TV & video). Monster/SF movies, superhero shows, fantasies, horror, etc.

I've not seen / heard of Star Fleet.

Star Fleet (original Japanese title: X Bomber) is a 1980 tokusatsu puppet show, along the lines of Gerry Anderson's shows, and is created by Gou Nagai. The story is basically Star Wars meets Getter Robo. Three characters ride three vehicles that combine into a giant robot (which is both a prop and suitmation).

I'm surprised to hear Saban wanted to bring Ultraman Tiga to the US, but in the end it was 4Kids Entertainment who did it instead. It didn't make appearances on UKTV, which is otherwise a good thing because from what I heard the dubbing was awful!! They even censored bits that had Japanese culture in it (disgraceful).

One good thing did come out of it, though: The entire Japanese version was available here in the US on DVD!

The 4Kids version was not too good (it could've been a lot better), but it's a hell of a lot better to watch a badly dubbed series than an Americanized one. I have not watched Power Rangers in years. So by that perspective, Ultraman Tiga was still my biggest favorite TV show that time.

Just recently I've read in a NEO magazine, that the SciFi Channel "were" going to bring Ultraman Dyna to the UK, but in the end they didn't. Which is a good thing because they intended to replace the music with shitty Techno Beats.

Wow! You Brits were almost lucky!

I dunno, even if they changed the music, it's still better to watch a dubbed show than something that changes out the original actors, as bad as it'd be.

hmmmmm.........

theres a lot of talk about masked rider being a crappy americanized kamen rider and such. When i seen masked rider i knew nothing of kamen rider and i think to enjoy masked rider you must forget about all the kamen rider and everything else and just rember that this is a kids show meant for kids so adults looking into it and picking every singe detail wrong with it i think is wrong i like masked rider for one reason, its good entertainment the same goes for vr troopers and beetleborgs. Im sick of all this comparing to the japensse counter part buuuut at the same time its hard to blame you all since most of you watch it and will feel a need to compare and contrast and thats all well and good but you have to rember the show is a kids show. I showed my younger cousins some masked rider man they loved it and were amazed by it which i thought was cool. I reckon if masked rider made a return or any toku show for that fact they could turn into a pretty nice success when toku shows such as masked rider and vr troopers started it was very low budget 50% of footage was japenesse like pr when it first came out, if they made an american toku show now based of kamen rider you would see more ameircanized fight scenes and such due to viloence and different storylines. Pr has more american footage now than it ever did espically the fight scenes.

Well thats my bit over.

Unfortunately, what ruins the whole concept is that many people "brag" that adapts are "innovation" and are better than the Japanese, which leads to misinterpretations of all Japanese, Spandex Clad, Multi-Color superheroes are "teenagers with attitudes" relatively speaking. In reality, it isn't like that most of the time.

...I mean...if you show 30 seconds worth of Faiz...and people clear out the room screaming "RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, IT'S POWER RANGERS!!!"...it kinda tells you something doesn't it?

As a result..."Anti-Sentites preach adapting all tokusatsu is INNOVATION like a Sunday Church Mass"..."Sentai Snobs see PR audience as racist members of the Klu Klux Klan"...etc etc etc....

But who knows...

PS: Sometimes people fail to realize, while the US hacks up Japanese stuff...Japan does the same...examples...Spiderman, X-Men, and Dukes of Hazzards (seriously)...

The Japanese version of Spiderman wasn't really a hacked up version of the US Original, it was all original Japanese footage. If you ask me I'd say Toei liked the Spiderman comic so much they thought it would be a cool idea to do a live action version of Spiderman, and so they did. I've not seen it yet, I have downloaded episode 1 but I've not got round to watching it yet, but I have seen some clips and I have to admit it was pretty cheesy, but that's normal for International versions of forgein superheroes, remember the Indian Superman? :P

But if the worst comes to the worst, it would have to be Saban's Masked Rider.

Japanese Spiderman was made with Marvel's blessing and assistance. It was at this time Marvel also had a hand in making Sentai (up to Battle Fever J). Marvel thought it would be a nice to have a different variation of Spiderman, but it was not a hack job. It's like instead of taking footage they made their own story. It also didn't hide the fact that there's an original Spiderman in the US.

Speaking of Masked Rider, did the show ever explain how that multiracial family came about?
I thought they said the kids were adopted

They only (supposedly) had a hand in Battle Fever J, Denjiman and Sunvulcan. The Marvel credits are obvious in Spiderman, but I don't recall seeing any mention of Marvel in the credits to those sentais. I'd imagine they had to give some sort of blessing to Battle Fever J since it was inspired by Captain America.

Hmm...I wonder if there's a J.K. Rowling credit in Magiranger...if not, she has a lawsuit!

There were. From Battle Fever J to Sunvulcan.

It was part of a four-year deal Marvel had with Toei, which could use any of Marvel's characters in any way they saw fit. It started, of course, with Spider-Man.

BFJ was supposed to be a Japanization of Captain America, so this series had a better reason to have Marvel in the credits. However, Denjiman and Sunvulcan had Marvel in the credits, but no Marvel characters were used! Go figure!
