I don't see why it should be considered as "stupid" to have a Japanese show being shown worldwide in it's original Japanese form dubbed in English. Plus, it's Masked Rider we're talking about, not Power Rangers.
The only "originality" I seen in Saban's Masked Rider is the lame comedy, the poor editing, the crappy laserbeams from the Ribolocane, and that annoying "Ferbus" character.
What we're saying is not go the stupid route this time. PR's a success because it's action/fantasy/adventure..... not some kinda zany hybrid comedy.
Power Rangers had their own characters and became a success, probably because the American audiance never got to know the Japanese original cast. I'm not saying if they discovered the ZyuRangers they would turn against the Power Rangers as if they were traitors, that would be unknown. Here's a good idea, maybe we should put it to a test. Get some kids round, sit them through episode 1 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, then episode 1 and 2 of Kyoryu Sentai ZyuRanger (preferably TV Nihon's version with Subtitles, so they can understand it), and see what they think.
At this time... I really don't see dubbed Japanese programming doing all that well. Bring ZyuRanger to kids and only the special ones that were like us would watch, while others would look for characters they could be and identify with.
I think if someone like myself were to do it, you'd get some honests results, but kids are easily manipulated into saying and doing what the adults want them to say or think.
Ultraman didn't stick with kids and it's not because of silly dubbing. Kids won't notice that or care, as plenty of successful kids shows have horrendous dialogue already. Difference in culture and what the market wants now dictates its rise and fall.
Here's another good idea, try NOT aiming Kamen Rider 555 at children. I don't see what's wrong with aiming it at Teenagers or Young Adult, since Wolverine/Batman/Marvel Superheroes/Whatever are superheroes like Kamen Rider, and they have been popular with these age groups since the 60's.
Only in HIGH budget movies. Television show production quality, and yeah... I'm sorry, but the Japanese level of production value is much lower than America's. Only special and talented teens and adults like ourselves would be down with it. Others would point and laugh or turn away self-consciously.
Only reason why our super heroes work in live action is because many we can identify with and it's got a giant bucket of production values that paint over all the things one might need to use their imagination for. And American teens and adults are self conscious about using their imaginations. Makes them feel "immature". So Spidey had such a budget that you don't have to worry about suspending disbelief or anything.
Kamen Rider.... not gunna werk. Maybe in limited release DVD.
See, what I care about most is
stories and fun.
I don't do it to wage some war against American television and its adaptations to prove I'm 133t Japanese otaku!
I just want people to have fun with this genre of stories, even if it has to be redone with stick figures and a flip book. So long as I see kids running around with toys and drop kicking monsters, I'm happy, I don't care if they do it because they saw an American or Japanese actor.
Kinda like the new Power Puff Girls anime that's coming out. Look like fun and the original Power Puff Girls will always exist.
Now we can have even more fun!
That's all I'm sayin'...
But really, I'm not entirely bothered about a Japanese show being aired on American TV, it's nothing exciting, but I am a bit bothered about having the American version being shown worldwide while the Japanese original only being shown in Japan. Since I live in Britain, it feels like being told you're not allowed to see anything Japanese because the Americans are gonna censor it, and that sucks!! But don't get me wrong about Power Rangers, I love Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, they were my favorites when I was a kid, but ever since there were these sequels it started not being as good as it used to be, and later started getting a bit boring, Ninja Storm was the worst, and I think it's sad that they're just gonna keep kicking out the Japanese cast every year.
*PANT* OK Rant Over.
What about Lost Galaxy! That was AWESOME!
Anyway, Japansese shows will be shown worldwide when the world wants it. It'll just take time and for the world to be exposted to the genre however possible.
Like how anime went throught its time of hack and slash and now... it's everywhere because the world wants it.
Same will happen for Japanese shows, but people gotta get into the genre first and that's by just making it because it's fun.... not because of what race is doing it.
