Alright let's get this started. So New York Comic Con just ended which means we got some comic news.
First is the official announcement of the cancellation and benching of the Fantastic Four. For those that haven't been following this little thread it seems that due Fox owning the movie rights to the Fantastic Four, Marvel at the behest of their CEO Isaac Perlmutter (who by the way is a racist, sexiest, and homophobic bully by all accounts) to distance themselves from the property as much as possible. Including refusing any promotion material to made with any Fox owned characters and ripping down all Fantastic Four related images in the Marvel offices. This cancellation is being attributed to poor sales but rumors point to Perlmutter demanding the characters to shelved until after the newest movie since he feels the book would be free promotion for the movie. He apparently also has issue with X-Men due to their movie rights also being held by Fox, but due to their higher sales and sheer number of titles canceling that line would be hard to explain. Of course all this has been dismissed by various over the last few months saying that it is all absurd and just rumor mongering from Bleeding Cool.
And sadly this where I kinda just stopped caring about Marvel news this weekend. I understand Marvel is business first and foremost, and now the name of the game is movies. Still this just shows that the comics are now meaningless to them if the can just throw Marvel's First Family aside like this. They are the start of the Marvel universe as we know it, without them nothing else would have happened. And now due to negative feelings over a business deal we are being told they no longer matter. Now I could very well be overreacting, but to me that makes me feel like I shouldn't care or invest that much in their any of their stories. It shattered the illusion that these pieces of paper are more than just product. It made just not care anymore. It made me feel like an emotional investment would just a be waste.
Moving on we got the Secret Wars 2015 announcement, which they said up front was designed to be product tie-in vehicle with various other companies like Hasbro, Upper Deck, Gentle Giant, Funko, and Hot Topic. This year long storyline and event whose purpose seems to be moving merchandise. It's refreshing they are being upfront about it, but doesn't do them any favors about how I feel after the Fantastic Four news. And honestly I should really be looking forward to this event. The promotional poster not only has original New Universe characters on it but Shadowline characters, too. I am so not whelmed though.
One bright spot Spider-Gwen is getting an ongoing. I am looking forward to that.
