[Comic] Marvel Talk Up Thread

Alright let's get this started. So New York Comic Con just ended which means we got some comic news.

First is the official announcement of the cancellation and benching of the Fantastic Four. For those that haven't been following this little thread it seems that due Fox owning the movie rights to the Fantastic Four, Marvel at the behest of their CEO Isaac Perlmutter (who by the way is a racist, sexiest, and homophobic bully by all accounts) to distance themselves from the property as much as possible. Including refusing any promotion material to made with any Fox owned characters and ripping down all Fantastic Four related images in the Marvel offices. This cancellation is being attributed to poor sales but rumors point to Perlmutter demanding the characters to shelved until after the newest movie since he feels the book would be free promotion for the movie. He apparently also has issue with X-Men due to their movie rights also being held by Fox, but due to their higher sales and sheer number of titles canceling that line would be hard to explain. Of course all this has been dismissed by various over the last few months saying that it is all absurd and just rumor mongering from Bleeding Cool.

And sadly this where I kinda just stopped caring about Marvel news this weekend. I understand Marvel is business first and foremost, and now the name of the game is movies. Still this just shows that the comics are now meaningless to them if the can just throw Marvel's First Family aside like this. They are the start of the Marvel universe as we know it, without them nothing else would have happened. And now due to negative feelings over a business deal we are being told they no longer matter. Now I could very well be overreacting, but to me that makes me feel like I shouldn't care or invest that much in their any of their stories. It shattered the illusion that these pieces of paper are more than just product. It made just not care anymore. It made me feel like an emotional investment would just a be waste.

Moving on we got the Secret Wars 2015 announcement, which they said up front was designed to be product tie-in vehicle with various other companies like Hasbro, Upper Deck, Gentle Giant, Funko, and Hot Topic. This year long storyline and event whose purpose seems to be moving merchandise. It's refreshing they are being upfront about it, but doesn't do them any favors about how I feel after the Fantastic Four news. And honestly I should really be looking forward to this event. The promotional poster not only has original New Universe characters on it but Shadowline characters, too. I am so not whelmed though.

One bright spot Spider-Gwen is getting an ongoing. I am looking forward to that.

Okay other than the artist, Joe Quinones, and Bendis being somehow involved with this, I have no other information about this picture. But I love it. Adam X, Shatterstar, Forge and Ink it's like someone found out my guilt pleasure mutants and put them on a team. Plus we have Sage, Stacey, and Marrow, all we need is a re-animated Maggot and Thunderbird III to have a reunion of late 90's and 00's unpopular X-Men additions. You know why this makes me happy it's like a line-up Chris Claremont would use, and honestly it would make me super happy if it turns Claremont is at least co-writer on the book. He has to be right, why else is Sage there?

So that was in the Marvel 75th Anniversary anthology issue from a bit back along other one shot ads of stories they wouldn't be doing.

Everyone remember when all this "end" and Secret Wars stuff was first being announced, and people were saying Marvel is heading towards a reboot. But every time Marvel said no that wasn't happening and that was a stupid idea, well maybe not in those exact words. Guess what is happening due to Secret Wars on Infinite Earths? The Marvel Universe as we know it is ending, I know let the shock wash over you.

As I said before I am really on the outs with Marvel, mainly due a combination of forcing corporate synergy into the books and frankly the heroes just acting like a bunch dicks for no good reason. I really do think Hickman is a major reason that this whole thing leaves a sour taste in my mouth. His entire Avenger's run has made the entire organization really unlikable, to the point you have to question if the books are even about superheroes anymore. Which is a trend that has been happening in Marvel for the last few years, and one that has really been turning me off every now and again. I know there are fun books out there, but they seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

The one good thing about this announcement is that I can just skip this entire event and wait to see what comes out of it. I just hope Spider-Gwen is left alone during all of this, I already lost All-New Ultimates I don't want to lose another one.

Update: Also it seems that the Attack on Titan crossover is going to be included with this year's FCBD title. Which I have to admit is a smart move by Marvel, you will get some much attention from Attack than anything related to Secret Wars

I've read the article and it doesn't sound like a dc style reboot. They said there's going to be a Battle World, much like the original Secret Wars, but it's going to have bits of surviving pieces from destroyed universes on it. Yes the regular Marvel universe is going away but a sizable chunk of the regular marvel U Manhattan is on Battle World. So in theory every Marvel hero and regular person on it, and the other surviving chunks, should remember and recall everything that happened before Secret Wars and Battle World.

As most who know me are all too aware of, I could not give a **** about the present day 616/Mephistoverse incarnation of Marvel, and haven't since it was created in OMD.

So long as Stan Lee's Spidey daily strips remains safe in that pocket dimension the Weaver created for it, then essentially the vintage universe will never really die anyway.

I also hope Spider-Gwen is protected from all of this...she's barely begun to breath life into her new ongoing and she's getting sucked into all these multi cross-over storylines. That is just not on. I'm already not so keen on this happening with Miguel for most of his book (even if his book is awesome), and Miles Morales has been overshadowed over the last year by Ultimate Peter coming back and the events of Spider-Verse

I read the Battle World stuff, but it's just a merchandising gimmick like the original Battle World. The thing about the original Secret Wars which is forgotten for the most part was that it is a tie-in for a toyline.

How they have been talking about it seems like they wanted to reboot the Marvel Universe (probably to even more closely match the MCU, purely my conjecture I admit), but just coming straight out with it would make them look like bad. Since a major part of the company line has been how they have had a "continual" universe since the 60's, unlike their Distinguished Competition. They had to make a work around, thus we got the boring and character damaging incursion plot from Hickman. I am just not sure if rolling it all into a merchandising gimmick was always part of the plan or not. Regardless at some point the idea, which I have no problems with and actually like, to use this as a chance to exploit popular points in Marvel history with fresh promotion and interest.

The worse part about this for me is I should be loving this so much, but I am not. I love Marvel, the X-Men is my favorite piece of fiction, I love reading about the obscure bits of history like the New Universe and Shadowline. I feel no excitement about this at all. They are even bringing back the 90's era Jim Lee X-Men and AoA X-Men (I admit I may get those books, depending on what they are actually about), two points in comics which I truly love and consider my version of characters. Really the best way to put this is I am also a Sega fan, and I feel the same way about Marvel as I do Sega. I think my day to day following of them is over, but I may pop my head in from time to time. And get really pissed when something I really want never gets released. I really want PSO2.

Also I am confused about one point, is Marvel treating Battle World as the new form of the Marvel Universe? Since this may just be me, but clearly Battle World is just around for the event and after that we get the rebooted universe. This is part I hate about current Marvel promotion, they basically lie to you. It's not just misdirection to preserve plot details, they will sometimes just outright lie when something is figured out.

Yep, it's obvious they're treating it in the same way the Heroes Reborn and Age of Apocalypse stuff was the "definitive" format for some of their heroes in the 90s for a good stretch. They're already saying "fewer titles" will be published, meaning, much like DC's Convergence, all the current stuff will just be put on hold and then resume with the tweeks added from whatever alternate universes end up becoming part of the new universe's "history"
