Marvel Comics: Where to Begin?

Marvel's best currently is any title in which Bendis gets to write Spider-Man. He really gets the character on a basic level.

The problem with his teams books is he packs it with popular characters that appear in other books so all they end up doing is spouting off their catchphrases because he can't give them any character development. Personally if this was me and wanted to get into Marvel now I would get Avengers Prime (out in June), it seems like it will fill in all the bits and pieces and give you a clearer image of the post Dark Reign landscape. Plus it has art by Alan Davis who is perhaps the best penciler working today, also he seems to have influenced a good deal of artists at DC so the art style will be less jarring than others.
 
The Ultimate Universe isn't the mainstream universe though. All the big events happen in the normal Marvel U
