I just don't think that's possible any more. The Reeve movies were ideal because they had the right kind of setting and character. New Adventures of Superman/ Lois & Clark worked because it was just a simple light hearted dramedy show that didn't try to be amazing or anything like that. The animated series worked at the time too. Smallville just got terrible because it lost the intentions of being 'Superman the early years', but the way it went shows why a movie can't work... Superman just isn't contemporary and modern enough for the audience nor the whole production. Just look at Bale's refusal to participate with having a Robin, or the Incredible Hulk remake...I'm just waiting for a GOOD new Superman movie to be made. (All of the Christopher Reeve films are admittedly inconsistent, but all quite enjoyable.) I thought Returns was a waste of great talent. (I hope Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey, at least, are kept for the reboot, because they really did fit their roles.)
And I couldn't name a memorable still discussed superman story in the last couple of years either. He's been around too much and it's just unecessary.
But anyway, that's why I wish DC could either concentrate on their lesser characters (Flash, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, etc.), or create new ones, and use the Big Three more sparingly. Forgive me, but most of the current writers/artists butchering the Big Three are parasites. Frank Miller among others (at least Miller's doing his own original stuff, even if it is testosterone fantasy violence, just like his bastardization of other people's characters). Very few people know how to handle them well anymore (Darwyn Cooke being one of those few).
I'm not that familiar with her, but I wouldn't say Simone is a 'parasite'. Morrison? Not the word I'd use, but okay.
Completely agree on the lesser characters. I didn't even know who The Flash and Green Lantern were until I saw the JL cartoon and the Simpsons references (comics aren't that big in the UK). The Flash could work in a traditional format in the same way Iron Man did, because it hasn't been done like that before so it could stay fresh; and there's those great rogues to work with. A Green Lantern movie could be great. The one planned should hopefully work out well, and maybe after that it'll develop into a big space epic about the corps.
