Manga Publishers change stance on Scanlation

How is reading stolen manga material on a website any different from torrenting that same manga?
It's not stole, SOMEBODY bought it originally so it's more like sharing 1 cookie with thousands of people is all.

If you really cared about the manga that you read and the writers/artists that create them, then yes, you would wait and purchase legit products. Getting your hands on comics isn't a life or death matter. Having some patience isn't going to kill you.

And here's a thought for anyone that reads "scanlations" without supporting the actual product ... how do you think the creators feel about you? Do you feel that they view you as loyal fans?
If I care about a manga I buy the Japanese and English versions but here's a thought, the English version is almost NEVER as good as the original nor any fan subbed version. Patience will kill me and not only that but what if it was the same for toku? What if Saban hadn't got back the franchise and you couldn't find ANY Sentai online, or any Kamen Rider for that fact. Then you'd NEVER see it. It's the same in this case. I can understand licensed manga but what about unlicensed manga that I love and like to read that will NEVER get an official English translation? Bottom line is if something's good people WILL buy it, forcing them to purchase something they HAVEN'T seen isn't going to help sales. People still buy sentai and toku dvd's even though they've seen the same episodes online...it's the same with anime if you like something you buy it if not well you're out of luck. Besides if it's really THAT big of a deal then you'll have to shut down all the Barnes & Noble stores or any store like it because I could go in there right now and read a whole volume of manga if not more, entirely for FREE.

I honestly hate the people that just sit in the manga aisle and read. I don't mind them being there, but it's a little hard to find what you're looking for when you've got to bypass a Narutard to do so

There will always be torrents, and megaupload, and several other ways to get the manga for free. But I'm surprised that Manga companies even put up with it for this long. I guess they thought that if their material was online for free that it would motivate people to actually buy their books. Those silly fools

Yeah, then the rights holders don't care about you at all. Your cookie sharing analogy alone is :redface2: Legally, it's still stealing.

Torrents. Suck it up.

Rock out. Barnes and Nobles has already paid the rights holder for those issues. B&N is a business. If they felt people reading instore was a problem, they'd change it tomorrow.

My issue is not that you read scanlations, my issues is that you're complaining cause it's not easy to find them anymore. You realize OneManga didn't translate those right? The groups scanning them are still out there. You just have to look.

Hey it motivated me. I've bought such obscure manga I never would of even thought about even glancing at before. Also for me manga is like a gateway drug lol. Once I get into those obscure-ish manga or even just a manga I love, I look for other material and buy it right up. Anime, Novels, Drama CD's, Apparel, Toys, Figure's, whatever it is I need it! I just think people are more prone to buying something they've seen before and know they like rather than taking a chance buying something they've never heard of and aren't able to see until it's too late.

I know OM and other sites didn't translate it obv. I'm part of a smaller scanlation group so I know that the material doesn't always go to torrents and that certain groups might just give up because of things like this. Some groups are able to do the work they do because of generous donations, of which come from people who've read them on websites not DL'd from a random torrent that could contain a virus. The members of SL groups are regular people they're either students or have a full-time job so I guarantee many won't feel it's worth their time anymore to do the work just to have it bomb on a torrent site. I've already been in 3 groups who've lost the cause over the years due to lack of time, enthusiasm, help and appreciation so this damn sure doesn't help the cause in any way. So for manga that doesn't get licensed we're even more **** out of luck if nobody is around to clean, translate, proofread, typeset and edit it all.

...It's not really that big of a loss for me(Sure I won't be able to read Guyver and I'll have to track down the bilingual edition of Devilman*cries at the difficulty of such a task* but that's the way the cookie crumbles)Plus if you're really a such a huge fan of the "licensed works" you should be able to go to your local book store and shell out 7.99 every 1-2 months

The problem is for most of the series' I like that are currently being produced it will take MUCH longer than 1-2 months dude. Not only that but the ones that actually ARE licensed and are in English happen to be so far behind where i'm at it will take over a year or more for it to catch up.

I only read the weekly series so yeah, this sucks.
Everything else I buy.

FMA isnt a weekly series ;)

What's the problem with being behind a bit? Viz is caught up with the japanese release of Real now and I hate it xD If you read scanlations you might get caught up a bit sooner but eventually you'll have to wait just as long for new vols. Besides maybe for weekly manga.

I get that people like these sites for obscure stuff that doesnt get released in english but to say you need this for Bleach or Naruto is bullshit.
