Lord of the Rings vs. Star Wars

I love them both but I loved Star Wars first when the films were re-released back in 97 and that was when I learned the history. I didn't read or cared about LotR until the films came out as well. I love fantasy stuff a lot but Star Wars gets my vote for making me like it first and because I do like Sci-Fi a lot also.

I like them both a lot too- The original trilogy were, I think, the first live action movies I ever watched. Also a bit ironic since (as movies) we're comparing an action/adventure series to a character drama series. (My two favorite genres)

All in all, Lord of the Rings wins in my book. Peter Jackson is an amazingly expressive filmmaker. George... well, the only things I've seen that he's done on his own that were decent were the Star Wars films because they're the only things that he really took his time with & thought through. And, even then, he based the series on mythic archetype. As deep as he really got with the characters were good, evil, & plot twist.

Lord of the Rings wasn't a very interesting book on it's part, but Jackson is one of the few filmmakers today who is fully capable & willing to use his direction style to enhance the film & help tell the story, something lots of directors these days don't really do (or, at least, not well) This helps really get into the characters' emotions & allows the viewer to really get into things on an emotional level.

So, yeah, Lord of the Rings, if anyone just wants to skip to the end...

Star Wars was one of the most original and influential sci-fi trilogies ever conceived, something that has left a lasting imprint on every other genre piece to come out since, but if you think about it, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings stories pretty much single-handedly innovated, encompassed and perfected every medieval fantasy convention that has yet been conceived, and I think that's a much more impressive undertaking considering it was the work of one amazingly prolific author working part time in a genre that wasn't even his forte.

I think the Star Wars franchise is more fun and has way more that can be done with it.

But the level of production quality and consistent epic tone, as a movie trilogy, Lord of the Rings is unmatched.

"Oh, what the **** has happened to this world?"

I ask myself that same question about the prequels and extended universe stuff. ..or when I think about Dan DiDio still having a job.

The original Star Wars Trilogy is awesome, of course. I love it. Star Wars is what got me into collecting toys. But while I don't hate the Prequels on the same level that some people do, I was pretty disappointed with them, and have little desire to ever revisit them.

So taking the entire body of film as a whole, Star Wars is much weaker than LOTR. Also, I REALLY got interested in that stuff when it came out. I still love it dearly, and would say if I had to choose between the two, I prefer LOTR, because more of it is good. The hours and hours of bonus features on the Extended Editions is awesome, whereas the only really good bonus feature I remember seeing for Star Wars is Empire of Dreams, which is pretty good, but my point is, the quantity of good material is much higher for LOTR.

I'm very excited for the Hobbit films
