Kuwait Pledges $500 Million for Hurricane Relief

KUWAIT CITY (Sept. 4) - The oil-rich Persian Gulf state of Kuwait said Sunday it will donate $500 million in aid to U.S. relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

The offer is the largest known put forward since the hurricane ravaged Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and follows a $100 million aid donation from the emir of a Mideast neighbor, Qatar.

Kuwait's energy minister said his country would provide "oil products that the disaster-stricken states need in addition to other humanitarian aid."

"It's our duty as Kuwaitis to stand by our friends to lighten the humanitarian misery and as a payback for the many situations during which Washington helped us through the significant relations between the two friendly countries," Sheik Ahmed Fahd Al Ahmed Al Sabah said in a statement carried by Kuwait's official news agency, KUNA.

Kuwait is one of America's closest Mideast allies and owes its 1991 liberation from Iraqi occupation forces to a U.S.-led coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's army out.

Kuwait and Qatar's donations came as the Egypt-based 22-member Arab League called on Arab nations to provide relief to the U.S.

The Arab League said that its secretary-general, Amr Moussa, sent a cable of "deep condolences and regret to the U.S. administration over the effect of Hurricane Katrina ... and called on all Arab countries to extend aid to the United States to face the exceptional humane circumstances."

Probably the same way America does.

We're not that rich a country.

We just call for bills for random ****.

"We need 4 billion dollars for the hurricane relief"

"we need 30 billion for Georgey Boy's little Iraq war"

And somehow, they get this money...that we don't have. They print more or borrow money.. Then what happens


It goes into the national debt, which, by the way, is at a record amount. And now they want 4 billion dollars for Hurricane relief!? SCREW THAT!

Look, here's a better way to do it. Take all that money that's being DONATED, move ALL the people out of New Orleans, get them temporary accomadations, and/or transportation to live with relatives, etc, and when the flood water is gone, LEVEL the place. Destroy it. It won't take long, since most is destroyed BY THE HURRICANE. Once you do that, re-build, don't try to build it exactly the same, use more efficent architecture. It will cost WAY too much to do a "restoration" project with New Orleans. Yes, the century old buildings and history will be gone, but we cannot afford to fix it. Plus, leveling New Orleans and just putting up new buildings would take less time than a restoration project

Now, I'm going to go off topic a bit, and be a jerk...Maybe

But tell me something. Since this hurricane was considered to be a really bad one, I mean, I even heard the weather reports predicting it would destroy New Orleans, BEFORE it happened.

Taking that in mind

Why did all those people stay there? I mean, when Hurricane Isabel came, my family and I evacuated, it didn't even damage our house, but we left anyway!

What POSSIBLE good reason could there have been to stay there?!

Whoa, man stop ranting. Kuwait is a very rich country. They export oil, and make billions off it. I knew a few people who lived there who drove like the latest model BMW. I was like "WTF?" Don't think it's that poor of a country just because it's in the middle east.

Oh I know they are very oil rich. But keep in mind, they also have their own expenses, just like America does, and like any other country does.
