Keith has NEVER played Pokemon!!

Snap is the only spin-off game that I will accept.
What about FireRed and LeafGreen? Those games were pretty damn awesome in their own right, even though they technically aren't spin offs, they should still be played.

The only games I think should be skipped are the TCG and Ranger games. All the others are pretty good, but sticking to the main line would be the best and then head off into all the other games.

Or just get the BEST versions which would be Gold/Silver/Crystal. Simply because I'm IN them! :D While playing through the game, you'll meet a character in the mountains named Brent. That's me. Although, by the time you get to me, I'm pretty easy to beat.
The reason why I'm in there? Cause I helped test the games before they came out.
I also helped test Pokemon Snap (in German) for 3 days. And the first couple of hours of gameplay were enough for me. Even in another language.

The only Pokemon game I have is the Red version on the original GameBoy. Had that for a long time and I've never played it for ages. I borrowed a friend's copy of Pokemon Stadium a long time ago.

Seen the Anime cartoon loads of times too.

My advice, don't start with yellow, Reason:

You start with a electric Pokemon(Pikachu) while your first boss is a Ground type tranier and it won't do crap agenst him. Seriously, it took me 2 years to win him by trading a Squrtle from myself. I don't really know how they expect you to beat him with Pikachu, and the TV show dosen't help since getting a Ground pokemon wet then shocking him doesn't apply to the games and if you did had any water, you could haved used that instead of the damn Pikachu!

Well, since the all-might Kaijumaster, and my second in Pokemon fandom, has invoked the name of Pikachu, I must put forth my two cents. I am one of few who has picked up pokemon and NEVER put it down. I have EVERY version in every series, though console titles post-dating Stadium 2 have never been purchased. I reinforce Trevor's support of Snap, since Stadium erased out games :P Poop on you stadium (except your mini-games). Anyway, yes, you've missed ten years of good clean gaming fun.

As several others suggest (and I remarked in another thread), at this point in time the best place to go is Fire Red/Leaf Green for the GBA. Remakes of the originals with all the menu and graphical improvements fans were dying for. They have a reasonable playing time of 30-40 hours, so the month before DP is plenty of time. Also, the GBA ones are compatible with the DS ones, so your efforts are transferrable to the newest games

Several others also mentioned Gold/Silver/Crystal. I like to call this the forgotten generation. Many people abandoned the franchise at this point, and the young whipper-snappers who came in afterwards do not appreciate it *slaps* It brought forth day and night, breeding, and a host of other features that remain key in the current games. If you get a chance, try one out for the GBC, and join the rest of us in PRAYING that they bring the region, Johto, from those games back (there are actually hints of it in DP, though it is not accessible). It actually is the only game to include two full regions to explore, including the original Kanto, and it kicks the ass of lame old Hoenn from Gen-3. Man that map is such a pain to travel on...

Anyways, I do not wish to usurp your leadership, good sir, but I emplore you to pick up a copy of this wonderfully fun series ^_^ I appreciate Trevor's appointment of myself as the Poke-sage here at HJU, though there are more skilled than I out there - I am just a knowledge bank and force of enthusiasm for the franchise (ie - biggest fan in my respective state township).

My last words are thos of warning - don't become uber-obsessed with the in-depth technicalities of the game, which you undoubtedly discover. It happens to so many, and at one point almost drove me from the franchise. The key to this game has always been keeping it fun - so go grab a copy of FRLG (they;re only $20 new) and start an adventure!!

Pokemon, GETTO DA ZE!!!

The trick is that when you arrive in viridian, go to the left and there you can find some Nidorans. Nidoran can learn Double Kick with enough training, a FIGHT type move that is super effective against rock -types.

I think you can also find mankeys early on in that game but I'm not sure.

Or you just train a Rattata to a crazy HIGH level so it just wins by being stronger. But yeah it's pretty tough.

Anyway MY favorite era is Sapphire and Ruby. I found G/S to be rather boring and I just LOVE the Hoenn Pokémons. Aron! Aggron! Electrike! Blaziken! Masquerain! Flygon! Swellow! Altaria! Tropius! Ninjask! And many others!

Funny. i think i had your number in Pokemon Silver.

Trevor (Thats me) is on the Boat in Vermillion in Red/Green so you can only fight me once..... course THAT character uses water types and I'm primarily a Ground/Psychic trainer

Hmm... never did finish one of those games. I had Blue, Red, Yellow, Gold, and Silver. All I remember is slamming it against the wall...... repeatedly ^^;;
