Kamen Rider THE NEXT

a motion pic based on the spirits manga would be pretty badass too.

Totally agree with you man. The Spirits manga is great stuff. I love the drawings and the story just rocks. If they did turn Spirits into a movie that would totally kick ass.

I think the suit looks pretty cool, it lacks the bulkiness and brightness of the original but hey, the KR movies (The First and now The Next) are going towards a darker theme so I see why they decided to make V3's suit the way it is. After reading the first volume of Spirits and they introduce V3 I think Kazo kind of has the look to play V3. I do hope that the movie does focus primarily on the riders this time as well, that made The First a lot more disappointing for me.

I do think The First was kind of a let down, but the reason and what the movie represents is a huge homage toward the KR franchise so I gotta give them that. I enjoy "wire fu" but I do wish the fighting was a bit more old school and more realistic but hey, what can you do.

i'm not too sure i understand the kamen rider the first hatred.

i'm a long time fan of kamen rider, although never really a part of the fan community. i kinda saw the original kamen rider a lot darker than it let on. it was like they didnt' have the budget or the right audience to really do what it wanted to do.

with kamen rider the first it felt like it was bringing me back the angst pain and revenge themes that i always felt kamen rider had but now was able to express. it kinda felt like kamen rider was trying to be kamen rider black to me only more of the drama.

the drama to me its the bread and butter to most kamen riders. (series like den-o don't account for much drama but they're awesome in thier own ways)

i guess the disappointing parts were the lack of actual henshin sequences and low amount of special effects. but to be honest i loved that part. it wasnt' exactly bringing it to the new era. it was making this new thing feel a bit older, giving it an amount of cheesiness that i love in some movies. sort of an 'old school, new cool' kind of feel.

so i really liked the first movie, so i'm looking forward to seeing THE NEXT

i never really got to see V3 tho so it will be mostly new to me. i'm hoping that the drama will stay in. especially like how the villians were treated in THE FIRST. it let me feel them more. especially when they died. since its based on the REALLY old riders again, just about anything they do with the special effects will be an improvement.

my only worry is that with three riders running around i'm afraid of it turning into a monster battle royal instead of having some actual plot and characterizaton.

For myself and a lot of others I have talked to a good 90% of it boils down to two things. 1. The Cobra and Snake emo kids plot eating the film alive and taking so very much filmtime and focus off of The Riders whom the film should be about. It started off strong and then grinded to a halt when they shifted to the subplot. I understand that they wanted to show how sadistic Shocker could be and maybe draw some parallel with Hongo and Ichimonji but the way they did was over wrought and it destroys the movie by just milking the "cry for the villans" stuff. 2. The totally odd and incomprensible angle they took with Ichimonji Hayato. If they wanted to make his story a little different from Hongo's than it was in the show ok fine, but what the hell was THAT?

My only other issues are that we didn't get a good sense of who and what Shocker was and the lack of somekind of henshin effect was just lazy. I can also find some agreement with the criticisms that Firsty Hongo could used a little more fire in his spirit.

I don't totally despise the First. There alot of positives. Loved the suit designs, the incorperation of wirework into the action balanced with hand to hand. Awesome bikework. I even enjoyed the romance angle with the reporter, I thought that was worthy of exploring (though I wish she'd had a less Lois Lane profession. This coming from a Superman fan.) I also thought they way they snuck in Shinigami Hakesei was damned clever. (But why the hell is ISSA there? This is not a man who inspires fear even if he's sitting near a Shocker logo.)

...but I am more than a little annoyed and dissapointed at the wasted potential and Inoue's need to favor angst over action in a superhero action series. I'm not saying it should be all fight and no story but c'mon.

When the angst present in the movie was related to Hongo having been turned into a cyborg against his will I didn't mind it. It makes sense. It would freak anybody out.

But when it came to endless stretches of it with the tacked-on kids it just got annoying very quickly. It was like there was some angst quota that wasn't being sufficently met by the Riders themselves so we get Yuji and Yuka version 2.0. The movie should not have been about them but given the camera time they eat up it bascially is.

Besides, the idea that Shocker takes innocent people and twists them is more than established by The Riders own story in the first (no pun intended) place.

but i liked that part. the whole snake and cobra thing.

Looks like I'm only the one who loved the subplot about two illness people who later became into Cobra and Snake. That was one of my favourite part.

Kamen Rider THE FIRST ruled. :buttrock:
