Bio:
From the day he was born, Akihito Kanji was nothing but trouble. Kanji was a genetic "failure," a whirlwind of sadism and violence. He seemed to enjoy inflicting pain and suffering on others. The little troublemaker was once suspended in kindergarten, when he poked the eye of a girl with a plastic fork, just "to see what it's like." And he laughed, as blood came gushing out of the girl's sobbing face. Only his father's influence (and money) kept a lawsuit from escalating out of control.
The final straw came just a few days after his 11th birthday, when he decided to stab his father with a knife during an argument. Fortunately, the stab turned out to be a flesh wound. But that was the last straw for the Akihito family, and they thought about putting the delinquent in a mental asylum.
It was really good riddance. After all, they never wanted him in the first place.
Akihito Kanji's birth was an accident, the end result of an affair that Mrs. Akihito had with her office secretary in revenge for an affair that MR. Suzuhara had with HIS office secretary. "Eye for an eye," she thought, and the boy gave her better sex than the old geezer had in ages. It's too bad her lover gave her more than just a night of great sex.
The only reason the Akihitos grudgingly accepted Kanji into their family was to keep the tabloids out. The senior Akihito was a successful and influential judge in Japan, and some say a future candidate for the Prime Minister position. There was no way he would let a potential scandal mar his career. Mrs. Akihito, for her part, agreed; she wasn't going to let her bank account, her collection of jewelry and fur, and her beach house fizzle.
When Akihito Kanji was gone, nobody except for his brother, Akihito Takano, noticed.
Unlike Kanji, Akihito Takano is the favored son. Mature beyond his age even as a boy, he was also incredibly intelligence. By age 15 there were offers from such universities as Harvard and Princeton and MIT to study there. And on top of that, his stunning good lucks and good boy image - along with his parents endlessly showing him off to high society - made him the perfect icon for his family.
Takano should be happy. After all, he was the child of an influential judge, was granted almost unlimited funding and freedom for his research at the University of Tokyo, and apparently still have enough charisma left over to be ranked as a Top 10 Most Eligiable Bachelor by tabloid magazines everywhere. Takano's colleagues have often joked, with more than a little envy by the men, that the female population at the University took his physics class for reasons other than physics.
But Takano loved his little brother, and he felt guilty. It was his shadow, he thought, that enveloped and ultimately devoured his younger brother Kanji. With every sucess, he thought, he took away a bit of Kanji's happiness. From the day he was born, his brother didn't have a chance.
And Takano knew that there was so much more to Kanji. There exists a genius beneath all the violence and the drugs and the trouble. Takano had taught Kanji everything he knew and learned, giving him the education that his own parents would not. And in return, Kanji turned out to be a brilliant student. Unknown to everyone else, the delinquent was as good with Quantum Mechanics as he was with getting in a fist fight. Takano knew instinctively that Kanji was much more intelligent than anyone gave him credit for. In fac, Takano felt - and KNEW - that had Kanji been given a fair chance, he could be the Einstein of his age.
To take care of his brother, Takano rejected Harvard and Princeton and MIT (much to his parents' disappointment). Instead, he settled on Seimeiin University for his Bachelor's degree. He would love his brother like his family, even if his parents won't.
And when Kanji stabbed his father, Takano stepped in to protect him. Takano convinced his parents to put Kanji under his care, and spread the fake news that Akihito Kanji was dead due to an accident, ostensibly to "protect his parents reputation" and keep the Kanji stabbing story a secret. He lied to his parents that he would put Kanji in a place where he would "never be seen or heard from again."
In reality, Takano was determined to give Kanji a fresh start. He used his father's political network to create for Kanji a completely new identity. No longer would he be "Akihito Kanji". Instead, he is now "Suzuhara Kanji," a child whose parents died in a tragic car accident, and who just recently woke up from the coma that resulted from the accident. He sent Kanji to a remote orphanage, and made plans to continue his education. He visited his brother every week.
And Kanji seemed to be doing for the better. He seemed to have calmed down since the stabbing incident, became respectful, even made a "friend". He stopped his sadistic streak too, although he was still arrogant. And Kanji was still very much a loner, preferring to lock himself in a room rather than socializing with others.
Takano brushed the concerns off. What was important, he thought, was that Kanji was finally showcasing the possibilities and that he was happy. He completed his studies with flying colors, and by the time he was 16, Kanji was Takano's intellectual equal (Takano was then 24). By 18, Kanji had obtained a degree, and founded his own lab, in a remote mountain-side near his orphanage, and began helping Takano in their research together. Together, they published several award-winning papers, and the future seemed bright.
Then, one day, Kanji disappeared.
Takano tried everything, but because Kanji was such a loner, nobody in the nearby town thought it was unusual that he would disappear for weeks. The authorities were no help, and of course the Akihito family in general were not interested. In despair, Takano searched Kanji's lab for any clues or signs.
That's when he found the papers. And a deck of cards.
As he browsed through the notes, he gradually recognized the research. It was, in fact, from the work of a man he knew when they spent a year and a half together to write a paper on the theory of dimensional space warping as related to relativity. In particular, Takano remembered the exceptional intellect of the man, but also an indescribable OBSESSION that seemed to ooze out of his body. The man was driven by an odd fear of failure, the likes of which Takano had never seen before.
The man was Kanzaki Shiro, and the research was on the "Mirror World."
Where had Kanji found these papers? Moreover, what was he doing with them? Kanzaki's "Mirror World" concept was an interesting thought experiment, and Takano had a hand in formulating some of the math behind it. It provided the subject for an interesting paper. But it was ultimately an abstraction, physically impossible and practically useless. Takano thought Kanzaki was mad for devoting so much of his life and mind to something that would never save lives or change the world, and it was the reason they split up as partners.
He was obviously wrong, and now his little brother was lost because of it.
Over the next several months, Takano furiously studied Kanzaki's notes. He understood the concepts, but the notes were rough and incomplete, and Kanji did not leave complete notes either. What was Kanzaki's purpose in creating this Mirror World? The "Rider War", Mirror Monsters, card decks...
"This is useless! I don't have time to do this!"
So Takano made a decision. He held the deck of cards that he found in his hands. He knew that they were the gateway, and he would use it and his Contract Monster to go into the Mirror World. There, he would find his little brother Kanji, get the answers to his questions, and bring him back.
