I've had some ideas on Eiji's past for a while, but not much concrete. I wonder if maybe Date was on a medical team that rescued Eiji after the explosion in his flashback.

I think Date might have been on the 'bad' side during the Civil War, and regrets his actions. That'd be a twist, Date was on the side of the guys who killed the little girl, and spurred Eiji into becoming what he is today.

Since a civil war involves only the people of that country, I don't really see why Date would join them. It looks like the current arc will conclude with him being killed off so that Gotou can take over as Birth, and I suspect Maki might also be written out at the end of this arc (to make way for Giru and/or the ultimate villain of the story.) And Maki would definitely join in a civil war if he thought it would bring about the end of the world ... wonder if some kind of parallel is going to be drawn between him and Date?
