Took me forever to write this, but here are my final thoughts on Kabuto:
Kabuto was one hell of a mind trip. When I saw the first episode I was literally on the edge of my seat. There was something about how the show opened up that automatically sucked me in. Unlike Boukenger, which was a slower opening, Kabuto was strong and dark from the start. It had me wanting to know more about the Worm, Tendou, Kagami, ZECT, and everything else that had been presented in the first episode.
Who was this guy that walked the path of heaven? How did he get this belt? Why does the Kabuto zecter ignore Kagami when he, himself, has a belt?
All those, and more, had me addicted to this series from the very start.
I had grown attached to Kagami from episode one. He always received the short end of the stick. The bumbling ZECT apprentice who wants to make something out of himself. He wants to prove to everyone that he can do it, but something always comes in the way of him achieving it. It was always frustrating to see Kagami always the one having to be saved rather than the one saving, so when Kagami obtained Zabee I had nearly jumped out of my chair screaming yes. Finally, the underdog pulled forth but when he relinquished it, I was pretty distraught. He finally becomes the hero yet he chooses his supposed “ friendship “ over glory.
It was as if I was watching Kabuto not for Tendou Souji but for Kagami Arata and his growth as a person. Out of all the characters in this show, Kagami had shown the most growth. In the beginning he was a clingy, hot headed, naïve ZECT apprentice who began using Kabuto/Tendou as a crutch, an answer for his existence and purpose within ZECT. He was too trusting and never looked that the “ wrongs “ of someone. But as the show progressed he became his own person and by the time he obtained Gatack he had became the hero instead of the distressed. He had overcome his trials of being stomped on by everyone and became the one everyone looked up to.
Kagami Arata’s tale was one of best, if not the best, storylines of Kabuto.
Tendou’s first impression didn’t grab me as Kagami’s. While he seemed to be carefree and a master at whatever craft he takes on, he seemed… too cocky. I think with Tendou’s character I gave up on actually looking for character development and more of “ Who and what is Tendou Souji “. He was already developed as a person in the show so it was more so trying to crack open his shell. He had too many questions that needed to be answered and so little time to answer them.
As the series progressed, each question was slowly answered, but in many ways they seemed to fall short. We find out about the belt and how he got it and why he’s good at everything he does, but everything else was a hazy field. While Kagami was receiving the character development, Tendou was receiving the ‘ too many questions and no answers’.
Which brings me to the addition of Hiyori being Tendou’s baby sister.
In the beginning, the impression I had received between Tendou, Hiyori, and Kagami was this:
Tendou - <3 -> Hiyori <- <3 – Kagami
It seemed as if both Kagami and Tendou held some sort of romantic interest in Hiyori. With the glances and body actions, it seemed that way. When it was introduced that Hiyori was Tendou’s little sister (albeit, mimicked sister), it seemed… to fall short. For nearly thirty episodes we were under the impression that Tendou had actually LIKED Hiyori, but to find out Tendou was interested in her because he was her sister.
Which brings me to this points:
1) You haven’t seen this girl in your entire life, how are you sure she’s your sister
2) Its thrown into our laps so late in the game, we have no choice but to deal with it
3) You wait until the last minute to declare this faulty deduction
I personally feel that the story would have benefited if Hiyori was more of a romantic interest to Tendou. Jyuka was enough “ younger sister “ for Tendou. Hiyori’s seemed forced. Protecting Hiyori would have still made sense if Tendou was romantically attatched to her (much like Kagami) than if she was his sister. Same scenario her applies to the movie, God Speed Love, in which Tendou pop’s on Hiyori that he’s her older brother within 48 hours after meeting her. It just seemed to fall apart.
I know the writers were trying to aim at giving Tendou a more... human side, but they could have easily done away with it.
So, Hiyori’s worm half was an introduction to the Natives. I personally felt that the Natives had an interesting back story. It was a good plotdevice… but for some reason, it fell apart. So we have Worms who run ZECT, but for some reason, throwing it at the last three eps that the Natives are basically the evil guys defeats the purpose of 47 episodes of Worm-ass kicking. Had they not waited so long with introducing the Native, then maybe it would have made more sense for a conspiracy theory.
It was too late in the game to bring a new breed of Worm, make them the bad guys, and just say that “ Wow, we’re almost done eradicating the worm, I wonder who’s next?”. It also seemed dumb to have this middle-aged guy in a sweat jacket running around acting like he was 20 and basically be the big boss and then to find out that he can’t molt out of his Worm form and pwn him within two minutes. If they had wanted to make Mishima the evil guy then they could have EASILY done without the Native and just have it that Mishima had his own agenda to take over the world.
It would have made more sense and the ending would have seemed far less rushed.
Which brings me to the other four riders. Kabuto had too many riders and not enough storytime. We get introduced to Zabee, who actually is developed into a legitimate rider in the series… even if the zector changed riders more than a 2 dollar whore from Thailand. But the inclusions of the Drake and Sasword seemed moreso like eyecandy. Kazama had promise but his role fell apart after Gon’s arc ended. He doesn’t appear until the last ten eps, hell, he didn’t even participate in the last fights. I know he doesn’t want to be a rider, but I mean, he had fewer appearances than Yaguruma. Tsurugi’s character held a lot of promise, but like with many other things, they used his character as a comedic joke. I’m sure they could have put him into more use than make him the bumbling Tamaki Suoh of Kabuto. At least they gave Tsurugi a proper sending.
But, our lovely Dark Riders. The punk, bondage-loving, Kick and Punch Hopper. When Yaguruma returned, it was a wonderful day in Kabuto-land. Here is a guy, who was one of the most respected ZECT members, reduced to nothing but a homeless man with a vendetta against Tendou and sanity long gone. His character was AWESOME. There was SO MUCH that could have been done with Yaguruma… and when they brought Kageyama into the darkness, it just seemed perfect.
Two fallen ZECT members reduced to nothing and driven into insanity.
Yet, after they kick Kabuto and Gatack’s asses, they become comedic plotdevices. Like a running joke in the last ten episodes of Kabuto. They wanna find the darkness, but can’t. They go around roaming Tokyo with a mission to destroy Kagami and Tendou, but they never get the chance because Tendou and Kagami always blow them off. They ultimately give up and try to find the light, and it just… was so disappointing. They could done something with them… Even their exit was shafted. Yaguruma never even appears in the epilogue, so its up to us to decide where he went. He says “ We’ll always be together “, but what? Did he kill himself? Did he continue? He was already crazy; did this make it worst for him?
But, despite that, the death of Kageyama had to be the best, emotional, ending in Kabuto. Even though I personally do not like the ending (Yaguruma could have easily removed the necklaces from Kageyama, as he’s done with Kageyama’s charm and everything else), emotionally, the ending was powerful. A very dark ending for two very dark characters.
There was so many questions left unanswered ( they could have easily blown off the two-episode iron chef/yakitate japan episode and explained some **** about the zectors and how these riders got chosen) but Kabuto was a solid series. I give it a 9 out of 10, it was awesome, but not quite there.
Wow, this is almost four pages XD
