What? I dont watch Sci fi shows or read comics. The only thing I recognized on that Wiki page was Buck Rogers. I ask because I feel like I should know what Flash Gordon is, it sounded so familiar but I just dont know it.

It's been around for decades in several versions, the latest being in the 80s. Sort of like Buck Rogers.

Flash has had a few television outings, the most memorable being the Buster Crabbe theatrical serials, Filmation series, and of course, the film with THAT Queen soundtrack

Defenders of the Earth and that abysmal 1996 animated series were his last known interpretations, "Defenders" and Filmation's run were the best.

My only gripe about "Flash Gordon" in general: Couldn't they think of an alien name of the villian? "Ming the Merciless" sound like he's from China that got kidnapped into outer space.

Uh...no. That's been his name throughout every incarnation of the series that's ever been made. Why would they change it?

And as far as the reference to China goes...

Though he is technically an extraterrestrial, Ming strongly resembles a stereotypical Asian supervillain, and his resemblance to Dr. Fu Manchu is especially strong. ("Ming" was the name of several historical Chinese emperors, and later of an entire dynasty, and the name has clear Chinese associations even for people not versed in the details of Chinese history). In later adaptations of the story, his Oriental nature has been downplayed out of sensitivity to criticisms of racial stereotyping. (In fact, in DC Comics' nine-issue Flash Gordon mini-series, Ming and most of the human-like denizens of Mongo [with some exceptions] were given grey skin.)
