Japanese Club - Idea Brainstorming

Good suggestions.

I believe our school's Japanese club brought in a Taiko drumming exhibit. That was cool as hell. They also have a table where anyone interested in Japanese, culture, language or whatever can sit during mealtimes - usually dinner since that's when people are not in class.

Read The Tale of Genji. I'm not kidding. You want to see Japanese culture, literature, history, plus just a good story - read that. Yes, it's hella long, but totally worth it. Oooh this just hit me; if you're going to have screenings, have readings - not only educational, but helps practice language acquisition. You're not going to learn it unless you use it.

Hmm...well, I'm currently reading Hikaru no Go now...so...I say, Get people to teach and play Go ! and have screenings of Hikaru no Go to promote it ..

I'm sure there's a few Anime dorks around, so have a small Anime Screening of what makes a good Animation in Japan, and what doesn't translate well due to cultural differences. (Educational!)

That's what I am worried about. I do not want the Japanese club to turn into a "Otaku dorkfest." I told all my Japanese professors about that this club should be much more than Anime. "Japan is not only about anime....to me its is about the language, the culture, the people and its rich history." My Japanese professor said that I do not have to worry about it because there is a separate Anime Club at our university.

J-Music is always nice. The influence western countries had on Japan, then the turnaround they did to reinvent their music with the influences from western cultures present.

I might do this as well.

Hard Gay

I actually had a test run of showing various Hard Gay clips from several Bakuten episodes while I was a Teaching Assistant during our summer session. It was a blast and will show more in the future.

And I know it usually bores the socks off people, but at least briefly talking about/showing clips of stuff like Kabuki & Bunraku is a good way to introduce people to a distinctly Japanese kind of theater. I've always found it fascinating that even with movies, TV, and all that stuff, it's still going strong even today, at least with old ladies. :laugh:

Great idea. I read The Tale of Genji during my freshman year in college and it was very inspirational.

Doing some activity for all the major holidays usually goes over well, we have an Ohanami party every year at my dorm that's usually a everybody-brings-something kind of thing. Maybe also talking about the Japanese way of celebrating Christmas (which, when I was there, was basically getting KFC and eating Christmas Cake) and New Year's (which was a lot different than what I'd usually do in the US, but very cool.) I don't know if the club will be meeting around the time it happens, but Obon is also a good one to cover. I wish I was in Japan for it right now.

Iga, I was wondering how do you guys celebrate Ohanami and Obon at your dorm room? We do not have cherry blossoms here in Vegas.:laugh: Ideas and examples would be awesome!:buttrock:
