Well the entire movie was thought up and drafted in the 90s, I'm not surprised that just the general designs feel dated and uninspired.

I just saw it in IMAX 3D and it is definitely a shitload better than the trailer. It's still cartoony but the higher resolution really brings out all the detail they put into the characters. Some of the close-up shots were just :O_O:.
