is ultraman nexus any good?

I never really into Ultraman but, Nexus is one of the best Toku I ever watched. From most Ultra series I've watched, I'd put Nexus on top, next to Ultraseven X, another great but short Ultra series.

I wasn't particularly fond of Ultraseven X, though again it could be by comparison with the series I watched before. I saw U7X right after watching the first season of Garo, and all I could see was a show that wanted to do similar things but wasn't doing them as well. All I really remember about it now was that Kamen Rider Kiva's mum was in it and that the wardrobe department apparently only had Matrix cosplay in stock.

Still, U7X wasn't anywhere near as bad as Neos, which spends two thirds of its' run being the most boring toku I've ever seen, then lifts up for the final third only to end on a big speech about how humanity will one day be able to solve a problem that the show has already set up an easy solution for. :shakefist That show put me off Ultraman for a long time. Thank goodness for Mebius, which finally hooked me into the franchise.

Can you spoiler-tag me what that is? I didn't watch the movie, so it got me curious.

Well, it is not exactly game changing but it is actually a cool detail when you consider the concept of Ultraman:

See, one little detail that Nexus brushes off to the side in the first episodes is the naming of Ultraman; TLT and the Night Riders originally referred to him as the Silver Giant until Komon, our protagonist, named him Ultraman for reasons that even he cannot explain.

This seem like an unimportant detail... until you factor in the movie: after Ultraman defeats The First it is said during the prologue that peace returned and that the children named the giant who saved the city as 'Ultraman'.

Here´s where it gets clever, for one of the key plot point of Nexus is how the existence of the Space Beasts must remain a secret since it would create panic and the fear of the population could empower them. To ensure this TLT created the Memory Police, whose job is to erase the memories using the technology they got from The Visitors AKA the alien race who was previously destroyed by the Space Beasts, and one of their first jobs was deleting the events of Ultraman The Next from everyone´s memory, something that is revealed in the last episodes of nexus where the Night Riders discover the case files about the events of the movie and realize that there was a major conspiracy to hide everything.

This is the reason why Komon named the giant as Ultraman; though it is never explicitly said, Komon managed to vaguely remember the events of The Next, maybe because he was a deunamist, which is why he merely said that the name 'just popped up in his head' when he saw Ultraman.

Now, the memories that are deleted from people are not lost forever since they are actually stored inside Lethe, the sea of memory which is deep within the TLT base, and during the last episode Dark Zagi destroys Lethe in order to empower the Space beast with the fear of the population, and here is where the big twist comes up.

During the final battle between Komon/Ultraman and Dark Zagi, people start remembering not only the attacks of the space beasts but also how Ultraman saved them, and people actually start calling out for "Ultraman" because they remembered the silver giant that saved them 5 years ago.

This is what i find really clever; sealing the memories people had did prevented the Space Beasts from growing stronger since they could feed on fear, but this also weakened Ultraman since he is essentially powered by Hope, so when people started to remember how Ultraman saved them during the final battle, Komon managed to become Ultraman Noa because of the hope of the people who remembered the events of the Next.

You don´t really need to know this to enjoy the series, but man, that is a really cool twist that ties to events of the movie with the series in a neat way.

^ Man, that is actually kind of brilliant.

As others have said, it is very different from other Ultraman shows. One of the main differences is that the whole "hero of light" thing is dropped, and instead the role of being an Ultraman is seen as more of a curse, and being the host of this alien not only fucks up your mind, but does damage to your body as well.

The theme of "hero" isn't dropped so much as it's just handled differently than most other Ultra series. I mean, it's all over the opening song, for one thing.

Yeah, Ultraman Neos was a painful sit. I think the only unique idea that show had was Ultraseven 21's numerous human forms, but Neos didn't do nearly enough with that concept. Also, I feel that Ultraseven X really improved after the first few episodes, when it started to focus more on sci-fi than badly choreographed fight scenes. Those two are definitely among the weakest Ultra shows out there (Powered is still bottom of the barrel), but they're all fortunately short.

Nexus is just my favorite show of all time. Nothing I've watched has beaten it so far, not even Gokaiger (one of the most exciting Sentai), Ultraman Mebius/Zero (probably the best special effects of a toku).

Literally every episode makes you want to watch the next. Every story-arc is interesting and has a connection to the next. There are literally zero monster-of-the-week episodes, because all episodes are story-related.












And speaking of Ultraseven X, it's my 2nd favorite Ultraman series behind Nexus. The background of the story, the way it is told, is just genius. It's actually just a 4-episode story-arc. But the remaining 8 episodes all have interesting side stories to tide you over, until the final 3 episodes which go back to the main story, and finishes it with an epic ending.

I was thinking about watching it, but is it good or bad?

Its just better to go and watch it yourself. And for real for real, its very good shopuld've been longer. Its funny how DoA had a good song like Eiyuu but the rest of their music sucks. lol.

I'm not sure if possibly bad TVN subs were to blame (not unlikely) or it being my first Ultra was, but honestly, I... found it really hard to follow for the first few episodes. I stuck through and it really began to grow on me, but then it became somewhat frustrating when it promptly changed its entire cast halfway through after I'd started really liking it - but the new guys grew on me soon enough.

I'd say it's a pretty good show, and one I'd like to rewatch if it were resubbed someday, but despite how much I'm fairly sure I liked it and how much I love the first opening song, I honestly have no idea what actually happened in it.
