Is Spielvan still on DVD?

When my Japanese roommate returned to Japan, I paid him to buy me Toei's DVD re-release of Spielban (the first volume anyway). Right now, I don't have a region-free DVD player, but when I buy one, I will have this. :buttrock:

The proper way to spell it is "Spielban," actually. His name was inspired by Spielberg (just as Gavan's by Jean Gabin and Shaider by Roy Scheider).

The Spielban DVDs are nice in that they're one of the only older Toei releases I know of that have extras that go beyond the standard galleries. There are two interviews with Hiroshi Watari (Spielban) and Makoto Sumikawa (Diana) and one with co-star/theme singer Ichirou Mizuki.

Interesting facts I didn't know yet, thanks for the explanation. Actually, I was merely pointing out that from a linguistic point of view, Spilban is a valid transcription of Japanese スピルバン。
But as you just demonstrated, Spielban is the logic way to go given the background mentioned.

It's Gavan and Sharivan that confuses people! :laugh: What helped with Jiban was the scene in the ending credits where "Jiban" is seen written. And "Spielban" was printed on the packages of the toys.

Spilban seems like a valid romaji transcription of スピルバン to me

Yeah, people need to consider that cdjapan/neowing is a business, not a bunch of hardcore fans. So if they don't know the official romanizations they do the best they can to be as close to the original to make it possible for things to be found on their site.

Yeah, in general these english to japanese to english transcription can be subject to discussion, especially for make-up names for characters or series.

Toei has a page of their official names for some shows, some of it is wacky. Uchuu Keiji Gaban is Space Cop Gabin, Uchuu Keiji Shariban is Shariban, The Space Guardian and Uchuu Keiji Shaider is Space Captain Sheider, I would have thought they would have used 1 meaning for Uchuu Keiji but I guess Toei wanted some flavor in the titles. Fiveman's name is Sky Rangers, :sly: I'm not really sure how that one works, nor does Kyouryuu Sentai Jyu Ranger becoming Galaxy Rangers make a lot of sense.

Not to mention Choujin Barom 1 is called "Barom-1, Super Rider"! (I guess they didn't want to call him Superman Barom-1? ) I'm not sure of CDJapan uses that as a source, I doubt it. Most of the time CDJapan just seems to romanize titles.

:laugh: Yeah, I saw that, I guess a super rider is better than a superman, funny thing I drove a car, macharod and never rode a bike. :sly: Err, when did 仮面ライダースーパー１ become 新仮面ライダースーパー１? I kinda like Denjiman, Electric Fighters. 人造人間キカイダー　is Roboman Kikaider, isn't Roboman a bit dorky sounding? And how does イナズマン　become Inazuman, The Lightning Man?

I would guess the people at cdjapan just romanize as they go along and don't look at any outside sources.
